The Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team works hard to make ski racing affordable for anyone who wishes to ski race for his or her high school. Unfortunately, the costs associated with ski racing are high. To reduce the financial barriers to participation, MAST organizes two types of fundraisers during the year: TEAM Fundraising Events and INDIVIDUAL Fundraising Events. Team Fundraisers generate money that supplements our operating budget to cover such expenses as race entry fees and lift tickets, training gates, wireless timing, two-way radios and additional coaching. The first Team Fundraiser of the season will take place on Monday, September 2, 2019. This is our annual State Fair Goat Barn Cleaning Fundraiser. Other TEAM Fundraisers are the Pierce Skate and Ski Oktoberfest, Chipotle Night Out, and Give To The Max. Individual Fundraising Events offer team members the opportunity to raise money that can be used to pay for the Hyland Season Pass, Giants Ridge Camp or Supplemental Training Sessions, the Banquet, or the Team Fee. Athletes can participate in the Hoigaards Tent Sale (September) and the City Kids Java Sales Fundraiser (October and November) as individual fundraising opportunities.
After every training session, the athletes slip in the ruts. The captains call the formation. This is the Flying V. The objective is to make the hill buff.

REGISTER with Mpls Public Schools and the MN State High School League.
In addition to registering with MAST, you need to sign up for Alpine Skiing with your HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. Some Athletic Directors will not accept Winter Sports Registrations until sometime in October. Nonetheless, it is well worth the effort to get organized early so there are no surprises (i.e., discovering that your Sports Qualifying Physical Examination Form has expired).
In general, you will need to complete the following forms, some of which have multiple forms within them.
If you played a fall sport in 2017 for your high school, you will only need to complete a NEW Emergency Contact Form (unless your Physical Exam form expires between the fall and winter season). Complete this form and give it to your Athletic Director.
If you did NOT play a fall sport in 2017 and you are new to high school sports in MPS, you will need to complete ALL the forms.
If you have played a high school sport before, you will need to complete all the forms except the Sport Qualifying Physical Exam Form, unless that has expired.
Middle school students need to register with the high school that serves the attendance area in which you live (even if you don’t plan to attend that high school). Complete all forms necessary and TURN THEM INTO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. Do not turn them into someone at your middle school.
A word about the Sports Qualifying Physical Exam form: This form needs to be completed by your physician or by a qualified clinician. If you have a primary care doctor, know that most physician groups will fill out this form and get it back to you in a week as long as the student is not due for a physical exam. Check with your clinic for their requirements. If you do not have a physician or insurance, you can call 612-668-4333 to make an appointment for a free sports clearance physical exam.
The Sports Qualifying Physical Examination form is kept on file in the athletic office of your high school and is valid for three years. So, if you submitted this form in seventh grade and you are now in tenth grade, the form is expired and you will need to complete and submit a new form.
I WANT ALL RETURNING ATHLETES TO GO TO YOUR AD AND ASK HIM/HER ABOUT THE STATUS OF YOUR SPORTS QUALIFYING EXAM FORM SO THAT YOU ARE NOT SURPRISED WHEN THEY TELL YOU IT IS EXPIRED.
If you are a new MAST athlete, get this form TO your physician as soon as possible so that you can submit it to your AD LONG before the start of the season.
Thank you for joining our team,
Mark Conway

2012-13 Season
*The Mpls Early Bird Invitational held on Monday, Dec.17, featuring teams from Mound-West Tonka, Benilde-St. Margarets, Mpls Southwest, and Mpls Alpine was a terrific success. Thank you to all the athletes, parents and coaches who participated as workers, athletes, and spectators. The Mpls teams did very well. The girls showed a lot of depth, sweeping the podium and placing ten girls in the top fifteen. Congratulations to Molly for her overall victory and to Eleanor and Rachel for finishing second and third respectively. The boys likewise exhibited strong skiing skills. Morgan, Matthew, Christian, and Alex finished second through fifth. Nine Mpls skiers finished in the top fifteen. For all the results, click HERE.

It has been a big week for MAST. The combined teams are sending 12 skiers to the Alpine State Championships--more than at any other time in the team's history.
The qualifiers are led by the Southwest girls team which won its Section IV race for the second year in a row and earned a place at State back-to-back.
This inspirational team is a story of comebacks: Anika Hager--on skis less than a month since suffering a compression fracture in her back last fall and Molly Carolan--working back from a torn ACL in her knee exactly one year ago. They finished (5th and 9th respectively). Captain Andrea Savage also would have qualified as an individual, finishing 12th overall of 122 racers. Eleanor Goodnow finished 22nd overall, she's back from her own concussion one year ago. Senior Ellie Kirkpatrick (36th) and freshman Mackenna Savage (43rd) were also strong contributors and join the state team.
Washburn's Rachel Anderson had the highest individual girls finish placing third and qualifying for State individually.
Five MAST boys create the largest group of individual qualifiers and represent every high school. Morgan Shields (4th) from Southwest, Captain Matthew Polland (6th) Washburn, Ben Calvit (8th) Washburn, Captain George Thome (11th) South, and Christian Hedrick (13th) Southwest fill out our strong contingent.
No team has more qualifiers than MAST's representatives.
Besides the SW girls winning the section, the Washburn girls finished 7th and South 21st...the SW boys finished third--just missing qualifying as a team as the top two schools make it to state. The Washburn and South boys finished 9th and 11th, respectively. So many of you skied well under the pressure.
The complete results are on the website.
The level of success of these skiers is tied directly to the high level of competition on Hyland's training courses every night.
Congratulations to the state qualifiers and Good Luck on Wednesday at Giants Ridge!

MAST Year-End Wrap-up
with State Alpine Accomplishments
Last month’s Minnesota State Alpine Ski Meet marked the end of one of the most successful seasons in team history—and the ten MAST participants were the most our team has ever sent to The State Tournament at one time.
Some notable State milestones:
Southwest’s Morgan Shields (who finished 15th) and Anika Hager (who finished 17th) earned “All-State” honors.
The Southwest girls (Anika Hager, Molly Carolan, Emma Keiski, Becca Mattson, Andréa Savage, and Eleanor Goodnow) were the first girls’ team to qualify in MAST history. Their seventh place finish capped off a consistent season in which Southwest girls also won the Section 4 and Conference Championships.
Sam Goldstein finished his final high school race in style with a 28th place finish (of 88 skiers). Matthew Polland became Washburn’s first state participant in MAST history and finished 41st …and Finnish exchange-student Olli Suortti, placed 71st after a fall and short hike.
But the numbers don’t tell all of the wonderful stories the participants gave us this year:
In an amazing display of leadership, all four captains qualified for State.
In the first MAST meeting of the season, Becca confidently said that the girls would make it to the State Championship for the first time ever…and they delivered.
Morgan, Anika and Molly each qualified as individuals based on their high finishes at Sections for the second year in a row.
Matthew became the long-time MAST Polland family’s first state qualifier thanks, in part, to the coaching of his brother, Daniel.
Eleanor bounced back from an early-season concussion to help the SW girls qualify.
And Molly courageously attempted to ski and help her team to a state title with an undiagnosed ACL tear from a fall in training the day before.
With six of the ten participants returning next year—and several other teammates who just missed the opportunity to go—the future looks bright for our team.
The MAST Board would like to congratulate the skiers, the coaches, and the parent volunteers for a fantastic year.
