Southwest Girls take 3rd in the 2014 State Tournament

The MAST State Meet participants performed extraordinarily well yesterday. The conditions were perfect. Hard snow. Sunshine. Great course sets. Okay, it was still cold, but we are used to that. Congrats to everyone who participated in the State Tournament at Giant's Ridge on Wednesday.

Here are some highlights about the day:
- All ten skiers finished their two runs without a fall or needing to hike. That is an amazing accomplishment in itself. It's common for one-third to one-half of the competitors in a slalom championship race to DNF. For the entire team to successfully navigate two runs is a wonderful accomplishment.
- The Southwest Girls got on the podium with a THIRD place finish in team scoring. Third place two years in a row. Congratulations girls!
- Ben Calvit and Molly Carolan placed ninth and tenth respectively in the individual standings and received medals.
- Eleanor put together two very solid runs to finish 20th. And she is only in her third year of racing.
- Ben, Molly and Eleanor earned ALL STATE HONORS for finishing in the top twenty.
- Christian skied the best two runs of his career and finished 23rd, which earned him ALL STATE HONORABLE MENTION honors.
- Rachel had a couple of tough turns on her second run but still finished 25th in a field of 89 competitors.
- Mackenna and Sophie shook off some first run nerves and put down incredibly fast second runs to finish 31st and 50th overall.
- Our fourth, fifth and sixth seed skiers demonstrated the depth of the SW girls team. Sophie skied in the sixth seed for SW and she finished well ahead of all of the sixth seed skiers of the other seven state meet qualifying teams. AND… she beat six of the seven FIFTH seed skiers.
- Andrea once again gave her squad a reliable and solid “anchor” as the fourth seed skier for SW, finishing in a very strong 41st position while beating six of the seven fourth seed girls from the other state qualifying teams.
- Helen skied like a veteran in her first State Meet appearance, finishing 56th overall and also beating six of the seven fifth seed skiers from the other state qualifying teams.
- And back to the boys race: Alex overcame some less than stellar runs in warm up to lay down two beautiful runs on very challenging courses to finish 28th overall. MAST placed all three boys in the top thirty. To demonstrate how well they performed, here’s a hypothetical. Had the boys been skiing as a team (and had only the first three competitors been counted in the scoring), the three MAST boys would have finished second in the team competition by my calculations. Forest Lake finished second in the team scoring. Ben finished ahead of their first seed skier; Christian finished ahead of their second seed skier; and Alex finished ahead of their third seed skier. Wow!

Giants Ridge Camp 2013-14 Jan. 24th - 26th
Race Results (Click here)
Wow!!! What a great group of athletes, parents, coaches, and siblings we have on MAST. THANK YOU to all of you who participated in the EIGHTH Annual MAST Giants Ridge Camp. I can't stop thinking about all the people who made this camp run so smoothly and knocked themselves out to feed us, clean up after us, work the race, take pictures, cook and bake and haul trash and shop.... You are all generous souls and I want you to know how grateful I am to all of you for your support. Thank you coaches for your selfless work on and off the hill. It is truly an honor to be part of such a great coaching staff. And thank you athletes for your can-do attitudes, cooperation, and for working so hard in some tough conditions. You embraced the purpose and goals of the camp fully and you succeeded in making yourselves better skiers, better racers, and a more closely-knit team.

Pierce Skate and Ski Oktoberfest (Oct. 4-6)
Thursday, October 3, 2013
Dear MAST Families,
With one little reminder, we have overwhelming participation is this weekend’s Pierce Skate and Ski Shop fundraiser. Thank you!!!
Our goal was to have at least two people for each shift, and as you’ll see below, we now have between two and five people for every shift except one! (Anyone able to join Erle Savage tomorrow Friday between 1:00 and 3:00?)
We will be supplying plastic gloves for food-safe grilling and food will be there waiting for us. Our role will be to grill the food, and to generally welcome shoppers and help with the festive atmosphere. This event is not as established as the Hoigaards’ Tent Sale…so we are helping to building awareness about this one at Pierce.
Please make it a point to say “Hi” to owner Bart Pierce who is thrilled to have MAST partnering with him for this Oktoberfest sale event. Attached is a note from the Pierce staff about the unique things their shop has to offer—including events this weekend and a 25%-40% discount coupon for a special sale weekend coming up. If you have any MAST clothing, feel free to wear it.
Thanks to all of the volunteers who have signed-up.

CLEANING THE SHEEP BARN FUNDRAISER 2013

Thank You! to all athletes, families and coaches who participated in the Labor Day Barn Fest 2013!
MAST again lived up to its own high standard of hard work and a quality job. The barn was spotless and bright when we were done.
It is because of the high level of participation in this type of important fund raiser and team event that MAST will continue to be a model organization for non-funded Minneapolis High School sports teams. Your dedication allows us not only to exist, but also affords MAST the opportunity to maintain top notch coaching, and to plan events that keep us highly competitive in the Minnesota State High School League.
Our next event is the Annual MAST BBQ and Ski Swap at Beard’s Plaisance on September 29th. Keep an eye out for more details soon.
Dave K.
