MAST Year-End Wrap-up
with State Alpine Accomplishments

Last month’s Minnesota State Alpine Ski Meet marked the end of one of the most successful seasons in team history—and the ten MAST participants were the most our team has ever sent to The State Tournament at one time.

Some notable State milestones:

Southwest’s Morgan Shields (who finished 15th) and Anika Hager (who finished 17th) earned “All-State” honors.

The Southwest girls (Anika Hager, Molly Carolan, Emma Keiski, Becca Mattson, Andréa Savage, and Eleanor Goodnow) were the first girls’ team to qualify in MAST history. Their seventh place finish capped off a consistent season in which Southwest girls also won the Section 4 and Conference Championships.

Sam Goldstein finished his final high school race in style with a 28th place finish (of 88 skiers). Matthew Polland became Washburn’s first state participant in MAST history and finished 41st …and Finnish exchange-student Olli Suortti, placed 71st after a fall and short hike.

But the numbers don’t tell all of the wonderful stories the participants gave us this year:

In an amazing display of leadership, all four captains qualified for State.

In the first MAST meeting of the season, Becca confidently said that the girls would make it to the State Championship for the first time ever…and they delivered.

Morgan, Anika and Molly each qualified as individuals based on their high finishes at Sections for the second year in a row.

Matthew became the long-time MAST Polland family’s first state qualifier thanks, in part, to the coaching of his brother, Daniel.

Eleanor bounced back from an early-season concussion to help the SW girls qualify.

And Molly courageously attempted to ski and help her team to a state title with an undiagnosed ACL tear from a fall in training the day before.

With six of the ten participants returning next year—and several other teammates who just missed the opportunity to go—the future looks bright for our team.

The MAST Board would like to congratulate the skiers, the coaches, and the parent volunteers for a fantastic year.

Thanks For An Outstanding Season!

The Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team 2011-2012 season officially came to a close on February 15.   What a wonderful season it was.   78 athletes.  17 coaches.  A demanding yet fun block of dryland training to start things out.  63 days on snow either training or racing, and sometimes both.   3 overnight camps at Welch. Extended training camp at Giants Ridge.   Talent show.  Scavenger hunt.  Coach buses.   New friends.  Great food.   Athlete video on Sprongo.  Impressive skiing improvement from every athlete. Outstanding race results from both the boys and girls and from both the MAST and Southwest squads all season.  Ten athletes to State.  A celebratory banquet to bring it all to a wonderful close.    Thank you to all the coaches, captains, parents and especially the athletes for making MAST such a wonderful experience for so many people.    It was a tremendous season.

The MAST Wild Mt Squads skied very well in the first race of the season.  The Southwest Boys finished THIRD OVERALL out of 24 teams and the MAST Boys finished in tenth place.   The Southwest Girls had a few bobbles to finish in twelfth. Morgan Shields skied his way onto the podium for ninth place and Matthew Polland wasn't far behind in 14th.  Six boys finished in the top 33 out of 143 skiers: Olli in 23rd, Christian in 30th, George in 31st (with a hike on the first run), and Sam in 33rd.  On the girls side Becca Mattson(24th) and Andrea Savage(29th) finished in the top 30 out of 143 skiers.  Congratulations on a strong performance.   Thank you to Chef Kelly for the fantastic lunch and to all the parents for your hard work and enthusiastic support.  Open the RESULTS page for both individual and team results from Wild Mountain.

Welch Season Pass Sale Through March 31
Welch Village is offering an outstanding rate on season passes for the 2012-2013 season UNTIL MARCH 31: $149 for returning season pass holders and $199 for returning season pass holders. On April 1, the season pass rate increases significantly. The plan is to return to Welch for at least two camps next year, hopefully three again.  Also, there may be some additional training dates at Welch during the season.   Perhaps on a weeknight or Saturday morning if Welch is agreeable.   It might be cost effective to purchase a pass, especially if you have the means to ski there a few times on your own during the season.  On Friday nights, Welch offers open NASTAR racing.  You pay $10 and you can take as many timed runs (GS) in the NASTAR course as you can in the two-hour time block. To take advantage of this offer, you need to purchase the pass on-line at www.welchvillage.com.
