MAST Update #8 Monday, November 7, 2022 Dear MAST Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Friends: One week to go. The wait is almost over. We have some important information to convey and a few reminders to complete some important pre-season tasks. Please read Update #8 very carefully. It's a doozy. Season Opens on Monday, November 14 with Season Pass Pick Up and More. Hyland has set aside Monday, Nov 14th from 5:30-6:45 for MAST athletes to pick up their 2022-23 Hyland Season Passes. Consider this to be MAST practice #1. We need to take care of getting our passes printed AND accomplish some additional administrative tasks at the same time. Please plan on attending. All parents of athletes UNDER 18 need to sign the attached Hyland Hills/Three Rivers Park District liability waiver. Please download, print, complete and sign this waiver. BRING the waiver with you to Hyland on Monday. Athletes who are 18 years old can sign their own waiver. If you will be riding with another parent to Hyland for season pass pick up night, or driving yourself, be sure to bring a completed and signed waiver. If you have NOT yet purchased a season pass, please do so this week. PURCHASE HYLAND PASS ONLINE FROM THREE RIVERS PARKS. Dryland Training Week One and Two Obviously, we will not be skiing next week. So we will have dryland training next week Tuesday through Friday and likely Monday and Tuesday of Week Two. If Hyland opens Thanksgiving weekend, we will hold a practice on Friday and Saturday. If they don’t open, you will have Wednesday-Sunday off that week. Back to Dryland Training: this year, in addition to putting you through a conditioning workout that will get your bodies ready to move with balance, speed, agility, endurance and power, we will also spend some time instructing and training your mind to think like an athlete and maximize your development in both training and racing. The coaches EXPECT all athletes to attend dryland training starting on Tuesday, November 15 from 4:30-6PM at Washburn. We will meet in the Washburn stadium if the weather is not dangerously cold or wet. We will meet indoors if the weather is problematic. Changes to our location will be announced via the Team Snap App. Please wear good quality athletic shoes, working clothing with under-layers for warmth, a hat, gloves, and jacket. NO SHORTS. Bring a water bottle. There is no running water in the stadium so you need to supply your own. Team Snap App If you are registered with MAST, you have been assigned to a team. I’m not entirely certain how all of this works yet, but it appears that when you were assigned to a team, you should have received an invitation to join that team...or something like that. You can download the TeamSnap App onto your phone. I believe the app will auto-populate your TS App with your team’s profile, but if it doesn’t, you should be able to search for your team in the App. Look for the name of your team: Southwest, Washburn or MAST. If you can’t figure this out, please reach out to either Sarah Graff at [email protected] or Amy Hemer at [email protected]. They are more acquainted with the Team Snap app than I am and are happy to assist. Parents can also download the Team Snap App and I am told that your athlete can add you to his or her team's notification settings. Again, reach out to either Sarah or Amy for assistance. Athlete Fundraiser: Finance Your Programming Extras MAST offers athletes and families the opportunity to participate in a fundraiser that benefits the athlete directly. This year, athletes are encouraged to sell coffee from Urban Ventures and salsa from MinneSalsa. The MAST Individual Fundraiser kicked off last week. If you were unable to attend the meeting, please visit our website for information about how to get started. It is very simple. Here is a link: MAST Athlete Individual Fundraiser Please read through the fundraiser details carefully. Attached are the sales forms you need to record your sales and the flyers about products you will be selling. NOTE the DEADLINE for placing orders: Monday, November 28th. Payment should be collected when the order is taken. Athletes are responsible for distributing orders to your supporters. Orders will be ready for distribution the week of Dec 12th. Why do we offer an individual fundraiser? MAST operates on a very tight budget. The MAST Board strives to keep the team fee as low as possible in an effort to keep our sport affordable for more Mpls students. Our TEAM fundraising efforts (i.e., donations and sponsorships, Mr. Paul’s Pasta Dinner, the MASTers Golf Tournament, and the State Fair Goat-Poultry-Horse Barn Cleaning Dates) and MPS Activity Fees combine to help keep the MAST team fee low. These funding sources cover the salaries for our ten lead coaches, as well as the cost of training and racing equipment, our video sharing platform (Sprongo), website and registration platforms, races at Hyland, entry fees to away races and invitationals, and more. Unfortunately, these revenue streams do not cover all of the programming we offer (i.e., athlete and coach lift tickets at away races, supplemental training sessions on Saturday afternoons and evenings, the Giants Ridge Camp, or the banquet). A portion of each sale you make will go into your TeamSnap account and can be drawn upon when you register for away races, supplemental training sessions and camp. Register With Mpls Public Schools Athletics—Be Sure Your AD Has Sufficient Time To Clear You To Participate! Many, if not MOST of you have already registered for Alpine Skiing with MPS Athletics. If you have not done this yet, please do so today. Note that you will need to click on two separate links. One to register for Alpine with MPS and a second to pay the $75 MPS Activity Fee online and directly to MPS this year. IF YOU ARE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, ENTER THE NAME OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL WHEN YOU ARE REGISTERING FOR ALPINE SKIING. If you enter the name of your middle school, alpine skiing is not given as a option for registration. IF YOU ARE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PAY THE $75 ACTIVITY FEE ONLINE. Middle school athletes will need to mail or deliver a check made payable to Mpls Public Schools to your high school athletic director. Here is a link to register for alpine skiing with Mpls Public School Athletics. MPS WINTER SPORTS REGISTRATION MAST Team Roster and Carpools As you know, we do not provide bussing to practices. Many families form car pools, some which last for years. I would like to send out a MAST Team Roster later this week so that anyone who wishes to join or set up a carpool has a way to reach out to other families on the team who live or go to school nearby. IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION SHARED WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE TEAM, PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL INSTRUCTING ME TO KEEP YOUR INFORMATION UNPUBLISHED TO THE TEAM. PLEASE DO THIS BY THE END OF THIS WEEK: FRIDAY, NOV. 11. I will send out a roster Saturday morning so that you have time to work on car pools before Hyland opens. Giants Ridge Camp The MAST Winter Break Giants Ridge Camp will be held Monday, Dec 19 through Thursday, Dec 22. We will depart at 6AM on the 19th and return around 10PM on the 22nd. That will give you four days of skiing at Giants Ridge, three night lodging at Camp Chicagami, four lunches, three breakfasts, three dinners, transportation, coaching, evening clinics, video sessions, technique and tactics presentations, and maybe, just maybe, the return of the MAST Talent Show—A Not-To-Be-Missed Entertainment Extravaganza! I hope to get detailed information about camp to you later this week, as well as a link to register. We will have practice at Hyland Dec 19-22 for those who are unable to attend camp. Orientation to the 2022-23 MAST Season: Sunday, November 13, 6PM We will hold a very important pre-season meeting on Sunday evening at 6PM for athletes and parents. This meeting will address most of your what?, when?, who?, where?, and how? questions related to our training and racing programming this season. I will send a link to attend this VIRTUAL meeting later this week. Please log in using your athlete’s MPS email address. By using the athlete’s email address, I won’t need to “admit” you to the meeting. Once the meeting starts, I won’t be able to see that you are knocking on the meeting door so I can’t guarantee that you will get in unless you are using your MPS email address. So, log in using your mps email. MAST Website Please remember that our website contains a wide array of important and useful information about our team and ski racing. Please take time this week to familiarize yourself with all the PAGES that fall under each HEADER. For instance, check out the information on ski tuning under the EQUIPMENT Header. All athletes need to know how to tune skis (sharpen the edges and wax the bases). If you don’t tune your skis on a regular basis, you won’t be able to hold an edge on our icy slalom courses, your skis will run slower, and the bases will dry out. All of these things will negatively impact your performance. MAST Calendar Many of you have been asking about a calendar detailing practice times and race dates. We have one ready to go, BUT IT WILL LIKELY CHANGE. Please find it attached. The calendar is also available in TeamSnap. BUT IT WILL CHANGE. The reason that we are saying this is because Hyland has not released a lane schedule yet and likely won't until the end of November. We are requesting two lanes per training time, but that doesn't mean that Hyland will grant them. So we made need to adjust the practice times for certain Pods or Teams on a given night to avoid overcrowding at one practice. New this year: we are trying to dedicate one practice a week where the younger pods are training with an older group of athletes. We are also holding one practice a week for our three teams to practice as a team. This will apply just to the athletes in pods 9-12. So all SW athletes in pods 9-12 will practice in one time slot and all Washburn athletes in pods 9-12 will practice in another. MAST athletes will switch off joining Washburn one week and then SW the next. Again, the best laid plans will change. And we are still trying to set up a race for the second week of Winter Break, either at home or away. The Last Word Take some time to locate all of your ski gear and get it organized. Find your ski socks, try on your boots, tune your skis. Clean your goggles. Pack your ski bag. Hyland can open after just 72 hours of snowmaking, so you want to be certain you are ready to ski when Hyland suddenly says, “We’re Opening!” Mark Conway 612-275-8392 [email protected]
