MAST UPDATE #6 Monday, October 16, 2023 Hello MAST Athletes, Parents, Friends, and Coaches: The last two weeks have been very busy. The generosity of this community is inspiring. Let me start by thanking our Board President, Matt McConville, who has been tirelessly and enthusiastically leading, cajoling, cheering, and following through on our steady stream of fundraising efforts for the least three plus years. Thank you to Aaron Cherveny and Alison Krueger for your work on the golf tournament. Thank you to everyone who made a donation to the silent auction. Thank you to Carrie and Tommy Bagnaud and Phoenix and Levi Ehers for the tremendously successful fundraising dinner they produced for the benefit of MAST last Monday in their beautiful restaurant, Mr. Paul’s Supper Club. Having worked in restaurants for many years in my youth, I have a sense of how much work this was for them. I know that you had to work multiple days to prep for this, and then work on you day off. So thank you Tommy and Carrie. And thank you to all of the MAST athletes who hosted, served, bussed, dish washed, and did all of the grunt work of operating a restaurant. Finally, thank you to all of you for coming out to support our team. We have a lot of administrative tasks to accomplish before the start of the season. I. Have you registered with MAST? Please keep those registrations coming in. ’23-’24 MAST Registration II. Registration With Mpls Public Schools Athletics Is Open! Registration for MPS Winter Sports Opens On Monday, October 16th, not October 26th as I previously announced. This is an online registration. You will need to pay the $75 MPS Athletics Activity Fee and complete all the forms before your high school athletic director will clear you to participate. I WOULD ASK ALL ATHLETES TO REGISTER FOR ALPINE SKIING BEFORE NOVEMBER 1ST SO THAT YOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HAS AMPLE TIME TO CLEAR YOU TO PARTICIPATE BY THE OPENING DAY OF THE ALPINE SKI SEASON. Here is a link for more information about MPS Winter Sports Registration: https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/ Pay particular attention to all of the links in the upper right corner of this page. Note that there are separate links to access the various forms you need to complete and the portal to pay the Activity Fee. III. Reminder: Have you purchased your Season Pass to Hyland Hills? Every athlete needs a ’23-’24 Hyland Hills Season Pass, which can be purchased through MAST or online directly from Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Hills. To purchase your pass through MAST, send a check made payable to Mpls Alpine in the amount of $474 to: Hope White 4945 Clinton Ave South Mpls, MN 55419-5660 Deadline for ordering your pass through MAST: Sunday, October 29. IV. MAST Apparel Sale Closes October 23—Don’t Forget To Place Your Order. MAST APPAREL STORE V. Have You Secured All Of The Equipment You Need For The Season? Thank you to the coaches and parents who assisted me with the MAST Equipment Swap on Saturday. After all the rain we got on Friday, it turned out to be a really pleasant morning. A special thanks to Cyrus Vahhaji for his tremendously helpful work managing and editing the Equipment Swap page on our website. That work continues. Please remember to send Cyrus an email informing him if and when your equipment has sold. This will help him keep the equipment swap page up to date: [email protected] And if you would still like to post equipment on the MAST Equipment Swap page, please follow these easy instructions: https://www.mplsalpineski.org/mast-equipment-swap.html The other option for finding used equipment is to attend the swap at Hyland at the end of October. I recommend trying to get there at the opening bell on Friday to find the best selection. Hyland//Team Gilboa: Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 VI. Looking Ahead: Parent Race Worker Training Parents, please set aside the evening of Sunday, December 3 at 7PM for an online RACE VOLUNTEER TRAINING. You will learn how races are managed and officiated, how to judge whether a racer has properly passed through a race gate, and what role each volunteer plays in the execution of a slalom race. Why do you need to know this? Because ski races do not happen without a large number of parent volunteers. Even at the Olympic and World Cup level, dozens of volunteers are needed to work the race. The same is true for our races. We need over 20 volunteers to work races. Attached is a list of race day roles and a brief description of each. I invite you to get a jump start on learning about these volunteer positions. I will be asking for your help filling these roles for each of our races this winter. So much more to come... Enjoy the break coming up. Mark Conway. 612-275-8392
