CAPTAIN’S PRACTICES BEGIN!  - Lynnhurst Park -  4:00-5:15PM

Bring a water bottle and wear layers of athletic clothing and athletic shoes so that you can run, jump, hop, skip, glide, leap, spin or whatever the captains challenge you to do.  Meet your teammates, play some games, ask questions about the team and the season, and just have some fun.

CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING begins this week! SIGN UP NOW!
State law requires that coaches and trainers remove anyone suspected of having a concussion from athletic activity of any type.  To return to play, the athlete must be assessed by a medical professional trained in concussion management.  For Minneapolis students, the athletic trainer at your school must be involved in the post-concussion management and your return to play protocol.  One of the tools that physicians and athletic trainers utilize to assess whether someone is healthy to begin the return to play protocol is an online cognitive test called the Impact Concussion Baseline Test.   Athletes take this test when the brain is healthy and alert.   Following a concussion and after the athlete’s concussion symptoms have resolved, the trainer may ask you to retake the Impact Concussion Baseline Test.  The trainer can then compare your post-concussion test results to your baseline test results and determine if you are still suffering any cognitive deficits.  Even though your symptoms have gone away and you feel healed, your brain may still be injured.  You do not want to suffer a second concussion when your brain is still healing from the first.  So, the baseline test is designed to give health professionals one more tool to assess how well your brain has healed following a concussion.
Who needs to take the test?
Anyone who is skiing with MAST for the first time and has not taken the test for another sport during the 2025-26 school year or this Fall. You should plan on doing a baseline test every 2 years for MAST.
Where can I take the test?
The test will be offered at Southwest High School (they have the most capacity to help us with testing.)  *Students need to bring their Chromebook to Southwest for testing*
Dates offered:
Tuesday, October 28 at 3:30 or 4:15 pm
Wednesday, October 29 at 3:30 or 4:15 pm
Monday, November 3 at 3:30 or 4:15 pm
Thursday, November 5 at 3:30 or 4:15 pm

MAST UPDATE #6
Sunday, October 12, 2025

Hello MAST Athletes, Parents, and Friends:

The last two weeks have been very busy and we have a lot of administrative tasks to accomplish before the start of the season.  Stay with us! (and please read through to the end). Most importantly, registration with MPS Athletics opens this week for most schools!  Details below!  We hope our athletes enjoy a few days off this week and wish you safe travels if you’re headed out of town over MEA!

Action items this week:
  • Registration (Both MAST & Mpls Public Schools Athletics)
  • Purchase Hyland Season Passes
  • Acquire Equipment and Gear
  • Concussion Baseline Testing

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Register with Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team 2025-26 Registration.
2. Register with MPS Athletics through your designated High School Athletic link. (Some schools are open. See below).
3. Pay the MPS Athletic Fee through student quickpay. (Not open yet)

Have you registered through MAST yet?
Thank you and WELCOME to those who have registered with MAST!  REGISTER NOW  by clicking on Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team 2025-26 Registration.  Once registered you'll get access on the TeamSnap app to your team roster and emerging calendar of events.

*A note for registering returning athletes.  Please manually select your athlete’s current grade and school.  Autopopulating will pull from last year.

**Attached are Condensed MAST Registration Instructions that apply only to the MAST registration.

MPS Winter Athletics Registration
Registration for MPS Winter Sports opens for most schools on October 13. This is an online registration. You will need to pay the $75 MPS Athletics Activity Fee and complete all the forms before your high school athletic director will clear you to participate.

WE ASK ALL ATHLETES TO REGISTER FOR ALPINE SKIING BEFORE NOVEMBER 1ST SO THAT YOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HAS AMPLE TIME TO CLEAR YOU TO PARTICIPATE BY THE OPENING DAY OF THE ALPINE SKI SEASON.

MPS is now using arbiter.io for Athletic Registration.  This is A NEW PLATFORM FOR 2025-2026.  If you/your athlete did NOT play a fall sport this year, you will need to create a NEW ACCOUNT with the new platform arbiter.io.   Each high school will have their own link, found on the respective high schools’ websites, or MSP Winter Athletics Registration!  Most of these are OPEN ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 13.
Southwest High School Registration is open
Roosevelt High School Registration
Washburn High School Registration
South High School Registration

We will keep you updated as registration links change or open.  Thank you for your patience as this is a new process for MPS and MAST.

Quick Tips:
When registering with arbiter for MPS athletics, you will be required to create a new account unless you/your athlete played a 2025 fall sport.  Once you’ve created your account, you will find your high school or follow the link above.  You will scroll down to where you check the box for Alpine Skiing.  From there you will continue to scroll down and complete the forms.  Once you get to the CONTINUE button you will be directed to a confirmation page.  YOU MUST HIT SUBMIT on the right hand side of your screen.  You will be directed to a “quickpay” page for MPS.  That is currently NOT open.  When that is open you will have to go there to pay the $75 MPS fee.  WE WILL NOTIFY YOU WHEN THIS IS OPEN!

TO REGISTER FOR MPS ATHLETICS YOU WILL NEED:  Physician Info, Medical Insurance Info, Qualifying Sports Physical Form (see below - under Forms), Student ID

**Reminder that both registrations are required and both carry separate fees: MAST $300 and MPS Winter Athletics $75.  See the respective registration sites/instructions for scholarship requests. More detailed info regarding registration and fees.

Questions regarding Registration with MAST or MPS, please contact your Core Parent or our Registration and TeamSnap Lead, Coryn Petersen [email protected] or 612.910.2560

MAST requires a guardian signature on the Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability form.  This form has to be printed, signed and uploaded into the TeamSnap registration.  It is included in the registration form, but we’ve attached it below as well so you can have it ready to upload into registration. This form is required to register with MAST.

MPS Transportation Waiver.  Here is the MPS Transportation Waiver which we will collect at 11/10 Hyland Pass pickup night.

MPS requires all athletes to have a Sports Qualifying Physical Examination Form on record.  This is required for participation. Please see more about sport’s physicals in the link to Fees and Registration.

MPS registration will also require the MPS Emergency Contact & Eligibility Form.  This will be collected at pass pickup night.

IMPORTANT:  HYLAND SKI WAIVER - In addition to buying your pass, skiers/ parents MUST complete and sign an online waiver.  It only takes five minutes.  Hyland Hills Ski Season Waiver. Hyland will not release your season pass until the waiver is signed. Athletes who have already turned 18 must complete the waiver on their own.

CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING

Athletic Trainer:  Kelsey GleichWacker ([email protected])
Directions:
Location is at Southwest HS, in the College and Career Center. It’s the room adjacent to the counselors’ offices. If you come in the front entrance, go all the way to the back and left of the cafeteria. Go up the half flight of stairs, straight ahead is a room with lots of windows, go to the right of that room and immediately to the left is 3 steps. Go down the steps and through the door on the left.

MAST UPDATE #5
Sunday, October 5, 2025
Hello MAST Athletes, Parents & Friends:
What a week MAST had! It’s clear that our Fall Marketing Blitz has been a success.

We had around 50 participants at Info Night and we welcome our new athletes to the MAST Family!  Thank you for joining us.  If you weren’t able to attend, here is a link to the presentation. Additionally, our Core Parents are happy to answer any questions you may have (contact info at the end of this email).

And the weather could not have been better for our 6th annual MASTers Golf Tournament this past Wednesday! Big thanks to those who participated - and to Ali Krueger & Aaron Cherveney for coordinating the event. We had a blast while raising money for our program. Congrats go to our winning foursome (for the second year in a row): Ian Petersen, Peter Hunter-Hanson, Steve Johns, and Peet Moseley. This year, Ian took the term ‘handicap’ to a whole new level while golfing with a broken wrist.

Action items for this week: Register & complete forms, secure your racing equipment & gear, buy your Hyland passes, and add important dates to the calendar.

MAST Equipment Day at Pierce Skate and Ski
Wednesday, October 8,  4pm - 9pm.   Call ahead to make an appointment.   952-884-1990
Pierce Skate and Ski has been a long-time friend of our team, and they offer special pre-season pricing for racers. Just let them know you ski with MAST.
The staff at Pierce asks that you make an appointment in advance if you are purchasing skis and/or boots this Fall. A boot fitting appointment can take up to 90 minutes if done properly, so plan accordingly. If you need poles, tuning equipment, clothing, or protective gear, you are welcome to just walk-in.  Any of the Head Coaches is also willing to talk through your equipment needs with you. One other tip: download a clip of your best run from your Sprongo account when you go to buy new equipment. This will help the salesperson to better match the equipment to your skill level.   Please see the attached letter from our kind and experienced friends at Pierce Skate and Ski.

HYLAND Season Passes - Now on Sale!

MAST practices are held at Hyland Hills Ski Area. If you aren’t one of the 25 skiers who paid for Season Passes last Spring already, save the sales tax (which is about $45) on your Hyland Season Pass by sending or dropping a check for $499 made out to “Mpls Alpine” to Brenda Hunter-Hanson to arrive before Oct 29, 2025 at the address below.  Season passes will be available for pickup at Hyland Hills Nov. 10 at the Season Pass Pick Up night.
Brenda Hunter-Hanson
5312 Colfax Ave S
Minneapolis, MN  55419
Alternatively, passes are on sale on-line with Hyland for $499+tax until Nov 1, then increase to $524+tax.

MAST ONLINE EQUIPMENT SWAP
Visit our MAST equipment swap inventory to find (and post) used skis, equipment, and clothing being offered by MAST skiers.  Contact your coach listed below to make sure you are buying the right equipment (sizing, etc), if in doubt, and visit our Equipment Guide for guidance.  To post items for sale please see Update #3 for instructions or please email [email protected] and [email protected].  If you have sold items, please email the same addresses as soon as possible so we may update our inventory selection.  Thank you for recycling equipment and helping keep our community outfitted.

CALL for Parent Volunteers: Help us Continue to Improve and Get Involved:
The strength of MAST is highly dependent on parental involvement. We are looking for parent volunteers to help fill open positions within MAST.  There are 9 different Task Groups, 7 of which are looking for new volunteers: Program Administration, Registration, Communication, Equipment Management, Marketing, Fundraising, and Race Management.  Adults of younger racers are encouraged to join the listed Task Groups to give you the opportunity to train in before current volunteers leave with their graduating Senior.  We also have volunteer slots for SignUP management, Banquet, Race Food organizing, and one-time tasks that will help Task Groups (keep track of completed waivers, put together team roster, etc). The MAST Board and Task Groups appreciate your willingness to volunteer and help make the 2025-2026 a great season. We really can’t do it without you! It’s fun and you’ll have plenty of support.  MAST Volunteer/Task Group Openings

ON-HILL Parent volunteers for Practice and Supplemental Needed

This is a pretty cool experience for both parents and their athletes. Plus, being a parent volunteer during practice and supplementals gives our coaches more time to coach our racers.  The only requirements are that you know how to ski (racing experience not needed) and you must complete the MSP Parent Background Check.  You get to hold a radio, drill holes, replace gates, slip, and be up close, watching our mighty racers and coaches. Coaches will give you instruction as to what you can do to help. You can come out one night a week, 2 nights a week, stay for 1 session, stay for all sessions.  Recruit a fellow MAST parent to join you and make an evening of it! Please reach out to a coach with questions. Their contact info is at the bottom of this email.

“Volunteering on the hill is as close as you can get to experiencing what your racer is experiencing. You see the course from all angles and feel the energy from the racers up close, either at the starting gate if you help start or along the course if you gate judge or do course maintenance. I highly recommend volunteering to be on the hill.” - Steve Moore

25/26 MAST UPDATE #3

MAST UPDATE #3
Sunday, September 21, 2025

Dear MAST Athletes & Caregivers:
First, we would like to welcome the new athletes/families to MAST who have expressed interest in our team! Our means of communicating with our athletes and families is through email. Our sport is more complicated than most, but also more rewarding once you settle in for the journey. You will find that most of your questions will be answered simply by taking the time to read these updates carefully and following through on any action requested.
Second, we are unable to add “mpsedu” email addresses to our google groups address book. MPS blocks outside organizations from directly adding people to our address book. Parents, please share these Updates with your athlete, and if you have an additional email address for your student, please let us know so we can add them to our distribution list.
Third, if you feel you might be on this distribution list in error, please unsubscribe or let us know…though we’d hate to see you go!
We have a lot coming up in October.  Mark your calendars, sign up, participate, engage, learn, befriend, expand, and thrive.  Let’s dive in!

Update #2 covers important information on purchasing ski equipment (here’s a quick link on that too MAST Equipment Info).  If you have used slalom race skis or related race equipment to sell, or if you want to see what’s for sale, go to our MAST Equipment Swapsite (read the equipment info sheet first and we encourage you to talk to a coach with equipment questions, contact info at end of this update).   And if you’re new to the team or just have general questions about MAST, make sure to check out our MAST Fact Sheet.
Registration is coming up in a couple of weeks…and so is our 6th Annual MASTers Golf Tournament! See below for detailed info and sign ups.

MAST Marketing Blitz
The MAST marketing committee is looking to increase our recruiting efforts among students and parents this year. September is a key marketing window for us to increase awareness and to encourage families and prospective racers to complete the New Athlete Inquiry Form.

Our Fall Marketing Blitz is the middle of September at several schools, including Anthony, Paige, Sanford, Washburn, Southwest, South, Edison, Roosevelt and more.

This Fall blitz includes posters and yard signs, e-newsletter inclusion, event participation, and social posts. This is where you all come in – our request: as you see MAST social media posts on Facebook and Instagram – please like, comment and reshare these posts in order to amplify the MAST message and put out your MAST yard signs. If you need a MAST yard sign, please email or text Heather Hunt and she will get a sign to you.  [email protected]/612-860-7608

We know that word of mouth is one of the main sources of new recruits for MAST and this is a great way to let your network know about your MAST experience. Again, when you see a post – please like it, comment on it (IE, “we love MAST, reach out if you want to learn more” or maybe share a highlight or achievement about your MAST skier, etc. Your advocacy will help grow the program!

Additionally, please mention MAST in your conversations with other parents and students this summer. Point them to the website for all the info they need to explore MAST for their family. http://www.mplsalpineski.org/

Thanks in advance for the support! Go MAST!

Registration and Rostering
MAST Registration will open online on October 1.  Information will be included in our next update to guide you through the MAST TeamSnap registration process.  A second registration date and link will follow for MPS winter sport registration.  Instructions and guidance will also be forthcoming as MPS has updated/changed the district-wide sports’ registration process.
If you are new to MAST or have a new athlete in your family joining the team this season, please complete the NEW ATHLETE INQUIRY FORM that can be found on our website. Some of you have already done this, so thank you for taking that first step with MAST.   This will help assess interest and start the process of building a roster, and it gets you on our e-mailing list.

MAST practices are held at Hyland Hills Ski Area. If you aren’t one of the 25 skiers who paid for Season Passes last Spring already, save the sales tax on your Hyland Season Pass by sending or dropping a check for $499 made out to “Mpls Alpine” to Brenda Hunter-Hanson to arrive before Oct 29, 2025 at the address below.  Season passes will be available for pickup at Hyland Hills Nov. 10 at the Season Pass Pick Up night.

You get to hold a radio, drill holes, replace gates, slip, get a free lift ticket and be up close, and while watching our mighty racers and coaches.

Here is the Sign Up for all open volunteer positions including On Hill Parent Volunteers:

HOUSEKEEPING: ZELLE
Most purchases having to do with MAST are made through TeamSnap, vendors for MAST gear, or check/cash. In the past we occasionally used Venmo for random payment and reimbursement. Due to the challenges Venmo has regarding transferring to new users and a higher transaction fee, we are moving to Zelle, which is directly connected to the MAST bank account and has a lower overall fee for business transactions. We will have a QR code available when needed.

FYI:  SKI SWAPS & TENT SALES
Ski swaps and tent sales are a great way to outfit racers!  These events offer refurbished, used and previous season equipment at a much lower cost than buying brand new.  If you are new or seasoned in the alpine race world, this is an excellent way to build a necessary gear capsule.  It’s important to mention that racing boots and skis are different from recreational boots and skis.  In order for athletes to be successful in their alpine experience, it is highly recommended to outfit athletes in proper racing equipment.  There will be a deeper conversation about equipment at the informational session and in the opening weeks of the official season.
Thank you for taking the time to read and note this important info and dates!  We hope your academic year and your fall sports and activities are off to a brilliant and fun start!  Study hard, be good citizens and do your best every day.

**MInneapolis Alpine Ski Team put out this statement on August 28th on social media:
The Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team stands alongside others in supporting the Annunciation families and community after the tragedy on August 27th, MAST has enjoyed the graciousness and open arms throughout the years from Annunciation community. Annunciation, our hearts are with you.

IV. Volunteering: Help us Continue to Improve and Get Involved:

We are back! Welcome to the first official MAST Update of the 2025-26 season.
We hope you’ve all enjoyed your summer. It certainly doesn’t feel like it overstayed its welcome this year, but does it ever? I.  Monday, September 1, 5:30pm - State Fair Barn Cleanup Fundraiser for MAST

The Minnesota State Fair is underway, which means that we will be gathering with your fellow MAST teammates and MAST parents in our annual fundraising event of cleaning out the State Fair Goat Barn! This is a great MAST tradition and our team has been fortunate to have the connection to the fairgrounds to raise good money that pays for our awesome coaches and all of the gates you break during the season! The more people we have, the quicker and more fun the event is. So even if you are a MAST newcomer, we can show you the ropes and help you meet new people. And our experienced shovelers can show you their best technique.

When: Monday, Sept. 1st at 5:30 pm

Thank you in advance if you’ve already signed up! We can’t wait to muck it up with you.

II. Race Equipment and A Note On Purchasing New Equipment This Season
Ski racing is an equipment intensive sport. Unfortunately, ski racing equipment is expensive. For this reason, many of our athletes look for used equipment to get them through the first years of their careers. We will write more extensively about equipment AND upcoming ski swaps, as well as MAST’s own online used equipment inventory, in future MAST Updates. For now, you can learn a lot about the equipment you need and how to size and select used equipment by reading through the pages we have posted on our website listed under the EQUIPMENT header. MAST Equipment Info

Regarding NEW equipment: In recent years, ski shops have tended to run low on race skis and boots due to factors beyond the shops’ control.  Therefore, it’s typically advisable that if you are planning to purchase new boots or skis this season, you DO SO SOONER THAN LATER. It is possible that ski shops will sell out of certain brands of race skis and boots before the season even begins. Shopping now and in September is better than October. October is better than November. You will not find lower prices by waiting to make your purchase. We are fortunate to have many good ski shops in the Twin Cities: Pierce Skate and Ski, Gear West, Joe’s, Hi-Tempo.

Pierce Skate and Ski offers special pre-season pricing for racers. Just let them know you ski with MAST. Gear West also offers racer discounts.  Other ski shops may also offer discounts to high school racers. Just ask.

Here is the number to call if you would like to make an appointment with one of the many experienced sales staff at Pierce: 952-884-1990.  Any of the Head Coaches is also willing to talk through your equipment needs with you. One other tip, download a clip of your best run from your Sprongo account when you go to buy new equipment. This will help the salesperson to better match the equipment to your skill level.

***These are not MAST events, but it is an opportunity to buy USED equipment, clothing and gear. ONE CAUTION: Be very clear you are shopping for a MAST alpine racer shopping for Slalom race gear.  Ask for a salesperson who is knowledgeable in ski race gear. Being specific will help prevent you from purchasing the wrong equipment. Don’t hesitate to contact your high school coach for guidance before going to the sale.  See below for more buying information. Also, be aware that the race stuff goes fastest so you are far more likely to find things if you go on the early end.
***Read before you go!  MAST Buying Guide For Ski Equipment has a lot of detailed information about the equipment you need. The MAST Guide will help you understand how to size and select quality used (and new) equipment. Please note: You need SLALOM race skis and RACE boots. You do NOT want to use RECREATIONAL skis or boots. Why? Because they will not perform well in a slalom race course. The skis will be slow to turn. The boots won’t flex and help you create the kind of angles you need to progress as a racer.
Some additional thoughts/recommendations on equipment.
  1. For those who are new to MAST, you need race skis and race boots. Recreational skis and boots will not work.  See below for upcoming ski swaps.
  2. If you are a returning athlete, pull out your ski socks and try on your boots. Do they still fit? Are the soles worn down? Are they easy to flex? Too easy? Too stiff? Call me if you have a question about whether your boots will serve you well for another season.
  3. Check out your skis. How much have you grown since last season? How much weight have you gained? How many years have they been used? How much side edge is left? How beat up are the bases? While you are at it, sharpen the edges and put some wax on the bases. Again, reach out to coaches if you have questions about your skis.
  4. If you are a varsity level skier, you need to know that skis wear out. Simply put, worn out skis are slow. No matter how strong your technique, dead skis will greatly impact your time. MAST coaches have seen athletes improve their times by as much as two seconds per run when they move from a used ski to new. If you are a beginning racer, this is not a big deal because you can probably make many adjustments to your technique and tactics to significantly lower your times. But once you get to varsity, worn out skis put you at a big disadvantage to the other competitors. If your skis are more than two years old, consider looking for a new pair of used skis with only one year of use on them, or, consider purchasing a new pair this year.

MAST Registration will open on-line on October 1.

If you are new to MAST or have a new athlete in your family joining the team this season, please complete the NEW ATHLETE INQUIRY FORM that can be found on our website (link here also). Some of you have already done this, so thank you for taking that first step with MAST.   This will help assess interest and start the process of building a roster, and gets you on our e-mailing list.

V. Volunteering: Help us Continue to Improve and Get Involved:
The strength of MAST is highly dependent on parental involvement. We are looking for parent volunteers to help full open positions within MAST. MAST Volunteer/Task Group Openings

If you do not plan to return to ski with MAST this season, please let us know by reaching out to the Core/Parent Contacts listed below for your school.
We'll share more details about registration once the school year begins.
That’s a wrap for your first MAST Update of the season! Enjoy this final week of summer—we’re looking forward to seeing you on Labor Day at the Goat Barn!

MAST Update Week 13, Sunday February 9, 2025

2/9/2025

Hello MAST Family,
Saturday's Crazy Costume practice was such a blast and the perfect way to wrap up the season with lots of laughs and great memories. Thanks to everyone who joined in on the fun!

As we head into our final week, there’s still so much to celebrate! Super Bowl Sunday is here, and whether you're cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles (or just in it for the food & commercials), we hope you're gearing up for a fun-filled evening with friends and family.

This week is especially exciting as Sam Moore, Lia Rulf, and Lucy Renz head off to ski their hearts out at the State Race! Let’s all send them our best wishes as they race to the finish line!

A special thank you to our dedicated coaches, who juggle full-time jobs and still make it a priority to head to the hill and encourage and instruct our skiers. Your unwavering support, passion, and commitment to our team’s success have been invaluable, and we couldn’t be more grateful for everything you do.

As the season comes to a close, we want to take a moment to express how much we’ll miss our Seniors and their families. You’ve been an integral part of this team, and your presence will be deeply missed next year. Thank you for everything you’ve contributed to our team’s success and spirit.

We’ve got TWO practices remaining.  We hope to see you all there!  Let’s finish the season strong with pride and plenty of fun!
