What a fantastic day for MAST at the Section Final on Wednesday! The sun was shining, and the slope was filled with an amazing crowd of spectators who cheered on our athletes with incredible energy. Though our teams didn’t quite reach their goal of advancing to the State race this year, it was still a day to remember, showcasing the hard work, determination, and sportsmanship that makes MAST racing so special. On an individual note, we are thrilled to announce that three of our racers will be moving on to compete at the State race at Giant’s Ridge! Congratulations to Washburn’s Sam Moore for earning 14th place and Southwest’s Lucy Renz and Lia Rulf for securing fantastic 5th and 8th place finishes! These athletes have shown exceptional skill and resilience all season long, and we can’t wait to see them race at the State level. While the day might not have gone exactly as planned for the team as a whole, it was a celebration of an amazing season, filled with progress and a ton of fun. If you weren’t able to witness Sections in person, there are a few ways to soak in the excitement of the day.
Coaches Corner Our last Supplemental Training on Saturday night was an adventure of sorts. Just as we started setting our training course, electrical power to half the ski area went out—the half we were training on. Wild Mt started a massive generator to power the lifts, but not enough to power the lights as well. Athletes got one run in a course on the race hill. For a short while we were under the impression that the ski area was going to close early so we called the bus back to the hill. Fortunately, we were allowed to move our course to a well-lit run on the other end of the ski area that had some nice pitch to it, and we succeeded in having a fantastic practice in spite of the initial interruption. Our athletes skied hard, and they skied extraordinarily well. For much of the night I was in the start, but toward the last half hour of the evening I dropped to the knoll and just watched them ski. I marveled at how good they had become at this difficult, unforgiving, yet exhilarating sport. Their technique was beautiful to watch. Their tactics spot on. They were fast, quick, agile, aggressive, fearless. They were ready to compete at the Section IV Championships. They had not let the confusion and delay at the beginning of practice derail their training or their effort. They adapted and they shined. I celebrated with a stop at the DQ in North Branch for a medium sized chocolate malt on the drive home, but don’t tell anyone. Wednesday brought us perfect race conditions. Electrical power was restored. The sun was shining. The snow was rock hard, but not icy. Our athletes looked great warming up. Their race day preparation was perfectly executed. But as we all know, our sport is unforgiving in the same way gymnastics or figure skating are unforgiving. One out of balance moment can de-rail a fantastic effort. This was, unfortunately, the case for several of our skiers on the first run. They skied the top half of the course with grace and speed, attacked the knoll, only to get tossed off track as they entered the last quarter of the course. There is no shame in failing to achieve a goal. You pick yourself up and learn from the mistake. This is just what our athletes did. They came out and skied great second runs and they did this from the back of the pack. For many of you, this was a great learning experience. Most athletes who go on to win the Section Championship had similar mishaps before claiming success. In fact, the two Hill-Murray girls who finished first and second on Wednesday both fell at last year’s Section IV Championships. One big highlight on the day was the number of girls who finished in the top thirty on the first run and made the flip. More remarkable is that for many, this was the first time they had ever competed in the Section Championships. Josie Bitney had the thrill of starting 1st on the second run after starting 63rd on the first. She finished 29th overall. Phoenix Ehlers started 3rd on the second run and finished 27th. Amelia Moertel started 6th and finished 22nd. Ella O’Connor started 9th and finished 25th and her MAST/Roosevelt teammate Violet Mueller started 12th and finished 26th. Lucy Renz and Lia Rulf dazzled on both their first and second runs, finishing fifth and eighth overall. Both qualified to compete on Tuesday at the State Alpine Championships. I want to recognize Stella Wedren who was the Washburn Girls alternate. She was called into duty the morning of the race and performed wonderfully, finishing 42nd overall. When team results were calculated, the Southwest girls finished 4th, the Washburn girls finished a very impressive fifth, and the MAST girls finished 10th. Well done girls. For the boys, our top finisher was Sam Moore who came in 14th overall. This was Sam’s first opportunity to ski in the Section Championships and he made the most of it. Sam will be joining Lia and Lucy at Giants Ridge on Tuesday. Finally, thank you to all of you who worked the race on Wednesday. MAST shines when it comes to providing volunteers at Section Championships. A special thank you to Dave Mueller who has been volunteering to serve on the course crew every year since 2013 if my calculations are correct. You are amazing Dave. If he had a dollar for every slip run he made over the years…. And thank you parents for the terrific support. I have to say, that was a fantastic lunch you provided and your cheering from the finish arena was noticeably loud from my perch on the knoll. You can listen for yourselves just by watching some of the clips from the race on Sprongo. In the end, it was a great day. As each of you came down the hill, I marveled at how much improvement you have made over the course of the year. If the results you hoped to achieve alluded you, I encourage you to take pride in all that you have accomplished this year. And if you are senior, I look forward to hearing the coaches singing your praises at the banquet. Thank you for your leadership, example, energy, enthusiasm and trust. You have enriched our team deeply with your spirit of goodness. -Mark *Complete Race Results are attached. First, WE WILL HOLD A PRACTICE TOMORROW (TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4) FROM 5:00-7:15PM. LANE 3. Second, KEEP SKIING AND TRAINING AND SKIING AND TRAINING! I want to encourage all MAST skiers to continue training. The coaches will work just as hard to help you achieve your technical and tactical goals for the season. It saddens me that we cannot continue beyond the date of the State Championships, but those are the rules. Just when so many of you are making big breakthroughs in your skiing, the MSHSL makes us shut down. But you can continue to improve. I will be sending out videos that both inspired and instruct you to improve your skills. You can work on improving these skills until the last flake of snow has melted, or Hyland closes. Here is a link to a great video of some awesome free skiing. This would be a wonderful video to watch over and over again. Implant it in your brain. Visualize yourself skiing this way. MARK Hello MAST Family, What an incredible regular race season it’s been! From fast-paced and sometimes long races to the support and energy from all our families, it has been a season to remember. While the official race season has ended for many, the practicing, support and fun has not. Be sure to READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH to see this week’s schedule… Hello COSTUME PRACTICE! In the true spirit of MAST and the heart of our team, we were so touched to receive this message and video (attached) from a parent at Hill-Murray. It's always rewarding to hear how our athletes represent not only their skills on the slopes but their character off them as well. Here's what she had to say: ”I am a parent of a varsity alpine ski racer at Hill-Murray. I captured the end of this moment last night shortly after our boys received first place over Washburn by a very tight 9 points. It was so incredibly heartwarming to see your boys come up and congratulate our team. What an OUTSTANDING show of sportsmanship!!! I was also standing near a group of them at the finish cheering one another on and interacting with some of our boys. They are all talented racers and living your vision of “exceptional citizens”. We look forward to seeing them again at sections!” Now, as we take a well-earned rest, we’re gearing up to cheer on our athletes at the Section Finals. We can’t wait to see all the hard work and dedication come to life yet again! PARENT SLALOM Race Results - see attached A special shout-out to everyone who joined in for our lively Parent Slalom Social on Friday night – it was a fantastic evening of fun and camaraderie! Our athletes and coaches were amazing, offering great instruction and encouragement to our parent racers, making the night even more memorable. The event came with a handy Run Order, allowing spectators to chant names and really get into the spirit of things! By the end of the first run, the crowd was buzzing: “WHO IS THAT? Oh, that’s gotta be Jeff Hemer!”—and the same happened when Megan Hadley took her turn. Turns out, they’re the ones you can’t help but notice! No surprise, taking home the honor of 1st, 2nd, & 3rd were Megan Hadley, Dani Leger, and Therese Gibbons for the ladies and Jeff Hemer, Jeff Elden, and Brandon Kalland for the men. Thanks to our parent volunteers for organizing and executing this last-minute event. We had a blast, great feedback, and plan to bring it back next season as a prominent fundraiser and social event! Good Afternoon MAST Families: As promised, some commentary regarding the race last night at Welch Village. First, another big thank you to all of the parents who worked the race and to those of you who cheered on our athletes. And thank you to the coaches who have make our athletes so competitive not only this year, but year after year. You are the best in the business. Let’s start with the boys. Washburn finished first in our third MEC race, placing 5 racers in the top 10 and 7 in the top 15 Sam Moore stepped to a new level of the MEC podium, securing a well-deserved 3rd place medal. Wyatt Shelton, Steffan Drekonja, Henry Payne, and Xavier Turpin finished 6th through 10th. Xavier and Sammy Hokenson (skiing for MAST,11th) have been riding the high-speed train of improvement, steadily placing higher on the results page with each race over the last couple of weeks. Also scoring for the Washburn boys were Eric Hemer (13th) , Will Moertel (14th)and Jens Hasler (23rd). The SW boys continue to improve as well. Sully Hunt (15th) just keeps getting faster and faster now that he has figured out his tactics. His skiing is almost as smooth as the sound he produces on his saxophone. And although Beckett (21st) and Rowan Krueger (25th) will tell you that they didn’t ski their best last night, there is a lot to celebrate in their skiing. From my position on the hill, they executed many turns that were simply brilliant. Once they eliminate a couple of rough turns, they will find themselves in the top 15 easily. The SW girls finished second last night to perhaps the best high school team in the State of Minnesota. Hold your heads high girls. And the Washburn girls placed third, demonstrating that they have been on a steep improvement trajectory. For SW, Lia Rulf, Lucy Renz, and Eva Voyakin finished in 5th through 7th. Amelia Moertel was the top finisher for Washburn, placing 9th. Amelia has been pushing the “fearless” button in practices and races of late and continues to move closer to the top of the podium. Keep it up Amelia. Ella O’Connor, skiing for MAST, placed 10th, followed by Phoenix Ehlers (Washburn,11th), Violet Mueller (MAST, 12th), and Reese Brothers (SW, 13th). All five of these girls have been working hard to drive their inside shin on the gate better and get some snap out of the turn. That hard work is paying off. Well done girls. Also breaking into the top 25 were Josie Bitney (16th), Harlowe Petersen (17th), Mila Voyakin (19th), Stella Wedren (21st), Sophia Larson (22nd), and Elsa Addy (23rd). In the end, neither the Washburn boys nor Southwest girls were able to hold off Hill-Murray to retain their Metro East Conference Championship titles from 2024. Do not be disappointed, however. The Southwest and Washburn Girls finished second and third and the MAST girls just kept getting better all season to finish fifth. The Washburn boys also finished second. They sure put up a fight, losing by only nine points. The coaches are extremely proud of how dedicated you all have been this season. You put in so much hard work and the results show. Congratulations. Everyone, keep working hard for the remainder of the season. For those who completed their racing with last night’s race, keep coming to practice. Push yourself in preparation for next season and in support of your teammates who will be representing you next week at the Section Championships. Attached are the point totals and standings for the 2025 MEC season. See you on the hill this afternoon. Mark ![]()
Good Morning: Race results just came through. Congratulations to the Washburn boys on your victory last night. Very good team skiing. More congratulations to come. Just want to get these out for now. See you at practice. Mark ![]()
