The best gift of all…a message from Coach Mark Greetings Athletes. We have experienced some soggy weather conditions lately. That did not prevent you from coming to the hill and putting in the work necessary to becoming outstanding ski racers. Other teams cancelled practice. Not MAST. When we announced that we would be free skiing instead of running gates on Friday, you embraced the opportunity to build your skills. I want to congratulate you for your attitude and work ethic. As you rehearsed each drill over and over and received continuous feedback from the coaches, we could see significant improvement in your execution of the drills. And when you finally got to make linked turns with pole plants on your final run of the day, your technique was noticeably stronger. The coaches will continue to teach you drills over the next two weeks (and through the end of the season) that will help you build all six fundamental skills that ski racers need to achieve ski racing nirvana (remember the Skills Pyramid?). I want to encourage you to take these drills seriously. Ask coaches for feedback on how well you are performing each drill. Seek to understand what skills each drill is trying to develop. Deliberately practice these drills. By “deliberately” I mean this: take a moment to watch the video instruction of the drill on your phone before your run. Then visualize yourself performing the drill. Consider any coaching feedback you have received. The goal is to perform the drill perfectly. As you master each drill, your technique will improve. And as your technique improves, so will your speed and consistency in a racecourse. Listed below are the six fundamental skills of the Skills Pyramid and the drills that we will be working to perfect over the next two weeks. As you can see, we will be focusing in on the skill of Pole Usage but will continue our efforts to develop the other five skills. Keep working hard. Keep supporting each other. It is a joy to be with you on the hill no matter how soggy the conditions. -Coach Mark Conway Drills For Skills - the Six Fundamentals Pole Usage

Happy Holidays, MAST Athletes, Parents, and Caregivers! ‘Tis the season for last-minute errands, too many cookies, and holiday movies that are so bad they’re good. But most of all this is a time of togetherness and joy, looking back on the wonderful moments from this past year and setting goals for the new one. We’re thankful for our MAST Family and all the memories we’re creating. In addition to the upcoming holidays, we have Giant’s Ridge to look forward to and some excellent opportunities for training. Please see below for important info. Holiday Week TRAINING SCHEDULE We have great lanes for training this week and will use both timing and film. Check TeamSnap for practice times and lanes (for Monday, and for the rest of the holiday week leading up to the Giant’s Ridge ski team extravaganza). This season, MAST will be invoicing participants for lift tickets and transportation costs after the race is completed to simplify transactions. We expect participation costs for races to be slightly above last season ($3-4), which averaged $34.75. Those who were at Wild Mountain on Friday will receive a separate email from TeamSnap with instructions on how to pay for the race. Appreciate prompt response in advance! A NOTE ABOUT SATURDAY PRACTICES Please note there is NO freeskiing anywhere at Hyland before they open to the public at 9am. They open the NORTH CHAIR ONLY at 8am to allow us to train, and we are to go from the chalet to the bottom of North and from the bottom of North to the chalet. We are not allowed to cut through the terrain park to go back to the chalet. Please respect these guidelines so we can continue to get great training done on Saturdays before the masses arrive. Saturday practice times are listed in TeamSnap as 7:45am - 10:30am. We want you to arrive at 7:45 so we can make the most of 8am-10am on-snow time. We are expected to clean the hill at 10, which is why we’ve listed 10:30 as the end of practice. If we’re efficient as a team you are likely off the hill or outside getting into cars by 10:15/10:20. Good Evening MAST Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends: Some people go to Stonehenge to celebrate the Winter Solstice and prepare for the lengthening of days until summer. Not us. We go to the foot of Wild Mountain, essentially off the grid…with only a tent (the best one of all the teams, BTW), a generator to heat said tent, hot cocoa, snacks, breakfast, lunch, and the most comfortable of camping chairs. And we make this trek solely in the name of cheering our hearts out for our amazingly talented MAST racers. Speaking of racing - read on for the coach's corner and invitational recap, along with reminders for the coming week. Wild Invitational - Coach Recap & Results! We would first like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of our parents and coaches who not only supported our athletes, but helped with setup and takedown of the tent, supplied food and beverages, and kept the fire going! What a great day we had at Wild Mt! The snow hardened up and provided the racers with a terrific surface all the way through the 100+ racers who competed. We had very solid individual outcomes and excellent team outcomes as well. On the boys side, Sam Moore took home some hardware finishing in 7th place. And Hudson White put down two fast runs to finish in 12th place. These two solid finishes helped lead the Washburn boys to a 2nd place team finish edging out St. Thomas to grab the silver. On the girls side, we had three Southwest girls finish in the top 10! Very impressive. Grabbing 6th place was Eva Voyakin, in 4th Lia Rulf, and taking home the gold finishing in 1st place was Lucy Renz! Congratulations Lucy! These fantastic finishes led the Southwest girls to a dominating victory over the rest of the field. I was proud of the way you guys supported your teammates today, you cheered loud, you carried coats, and you celebrated each other's runs. If you didn’t perform as well as you wanted, do not get discouraged. You will have good days and bad days in ski racing. Just buckle up your boots, get back to work, and keep having fun! You all are improving at a very high rate! Full team and individual results are attached. Rest up and we will see you at practice bright and early tomorrow morning! - Coach Matthew REMINDER: MAST RACE ON DECEMBER 23rd CANCELED - PRACTICE WILL BE ON We have great lanes for training and will use timing and will also film. Hi MAST Family,
As luck would have it, we finally got some powder and MPS canceled all after-school activities. We are not allowed to be on the hill as a team or hold any kind of on-snow practice when this happens. While this is a huge bummer, we need to stay safe, follow the rules and take advantage of the downtime before winter break and the hectic holiday season. Use your time wisely! Tune skis. Shovel. Wrap presents. Watch sprongo videos. Make sure your assignments are all turned in before winter break. Rest. And thank your families and caregivers for all they do. The good news? It's gorgeous out there and conditions should be great for our Wild Invitational racers as well as our athletes practicing at Hyland tomorrow! Go get 'em! And don’t forget to purchase your custom MAST buff! Last day! https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/463788 COACHES and SUPPORT TEAM, Mpls Alpine Ski Team Hi Everyone!

COACHES and SUPPORT TEAM, Mpls Alpine Ski Team Good Evening MAST Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends: There is a lot of information included below - results from tonight, details for Friday at Wild Mtn and more. We debated putting the results at the bottom in hopes that would ensure you all read every detail, but then we thought, heck, it’s the holiday season, so give them a gift and put the results first. Don’t make us regret this decision, fam. Race #1 - Coach Recap & Results! We had great temps and a nice crowd for our inaugural race of the 2024/2025 season. First, a big THANK YOU to all of our parents and coaches who worked today’s race. The race ran incredibly well. You braved the cold and did quality work on the hill. And, thank you, parents, siblings, and alumni, for supporting our athletes. We will need your help again as races get going at a quick clip in January so stay on the lookout for signup links in future communications. Before we get to the results, I want to congratulate all the athletes on a strong first race and a special shout out to those individuals for whom this was their first ski race ever. Pushing out of that start gate can feel intimidating. I hope you had fun and are excited to get back to training and your next race! As a whole, our team demonstrated strong technique both runs. The coaches agree that there is opportunity to work on our tactical skills but Joel also feels he may have set too tough of a course… Feel free to send any grief his way! Now for the results! Congratulations to our winners, Sam Moore and Lucy Renz! You both had commanding wins: Sam by a half second ahead of teammate, Henry Payne, and Lucy Renz by over eight-tenths ahead of teammate Eva Voyakin. The Southwest girls took home the proverbial trophy by sweeping the first four places and the Washburn boys swept their podium as well. On both sides of the race, the Washburn girls and Southwest boys are nipping at the heels of the other schools. All of your teams are deep and have the opportunity to achieve excellent results this season so keep training hard!! The results will continue to come, slowly but surely. -Coach Eleanor Details for Friday’s WILD MOUNTAIN INVITATIONAL IMPORTANT TIMES

Wild Mountain Invitational Sign Up 12/20/24 Note: Athletes should meet the bus at 6:15am to load. Please come to the bus wearing your hat, gloves, and gs suit. This will allow you to stand in the cold should the bus be late, carry your gear to the trailer without shivering away your energy, assist (effectively) with trailer loading duties, and speed up the time it takes you to get out on the hill to warm up before inspection. In the wise words of Mark - it will also demonstrate to your coaches that you have some brain cells. Wild Athletes & parents: You will be receiving an invoice via TeamSnap for lift tickets at Wild. We do our best to keep fees low, and ask athletes to handle the group rate lift tickets. Thank you for handling this at your earliest convenience! MAST RACE ON DECEMBER 23rd CANCELED - PRACTICE WILL BE ON After debating for a week, the coaches have determined that it will be most productive to cancel this race and return it to a training day. Run orders, team selections, alternates, bib assignments, and timing sheets are all based on athlete race intentions, so please get this done. TONIGHT is the DEADLINE to state your intentions for Wednesday’s race at Hyland and Friday’s Wild Invitational!! And yes, we’re still saying “waiver”, and only a little over half of our athletes have turned the Afton waiver in. We don’t want to call you out in front of the classroom so keep them coming! Check here to see if your waiver has been received. Coaches Corner I would strongly encourage all athletes who have practiced in a slalom course to participate in the races. It is important to understand the flow of the races - and the more exposure to races, the more comfortable you will become with the process (and the more fun they become as well!). Often athletes tend to overthink during race day and worry about how they will perform. It's perfectly normal to feel anxious, uncomfortable, and even insecure about races- you are not alone if you feel any of this! One of the best ways to improve is to show up to the races and just do your best. Take the pressure off yourself. It's a great, supportive environment. The race on Wednesday this week is a small field and very low stakes. This week would be the perfect introduction to race day with MAST. - Coach Matthew DECEMBER 23 Race Intentions DUE Wednesday, December 18 Please make sure to state your Race Intentions.

Practice tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 14 will begin at 8:45am, not 7:45am.
We just learned the chairs won't be running until then. An hour more to sleep in! Thanks! Hello MAST Family, It’s that time of year! With our first races coming up next week, it’s time to state your Race Intentions for our December Races. We really encourage everyone to race our two Hyland races. These will be more like instructional races and are important so we can all rehearse our duties: the athletes (veterans and rookies alike), the race workers, and our coaches. We hope to have some gate training over the next few practices so make sure to bring your shin guards! We have some very important stuff in this Update so please read in detail. ***And HUGE Thank Yous to Mike & Jen Rulf and Dual Citizen Brewing for hosting another fun Parent Social this past Sunday! It’s always nice to have introductions and catch up when we’re warm, not completely bundled up, and can actually see each other’s faces. Much appreciation to those who attended the Race Worker Training and signed up to volunteer too! OUR FIRST THREE RACES ARE APPROACHING. STATE YOUR INTENTIONS NOW!
HOW DO YOU STATE RACE INTENTIONS? When you click on the spreadsheet link below, look for the tabs at the bottom of the page for each specific race: Dec. 18th, Dec. 20th, and Dec. 23rd. Click on a tab and find your team (scroll down) and then find your name. If you plan to race, type a Y in the Yes box next to your name. If you do not want to race, type a N in the No box next to your name. For Race Intentions: Click Here. Deadline for race intentions - Saturday Dec 14 for the Dec 18 and 20th races; Wednesday Dec 18 for the Dec 23 race. *If you do not state your race intentions for Hyland races, you’re automatically placed at the bottom of the run order.
