Good Afternoon MAST Families:
I have one more race to add to the schedule with a link to State Your Intentions. I also am sending you the link to register for the next Supplemental Training on Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 2:30PM to 10:30PM. After I sent you the latest MAST Update, I was informed (last night) that we could enter our powerful squadrons of athletes in the Welch Village Invitational on Friday, January 13, 2023. We are taking 60 athletes in total. Please sign up. If you know you are in the top 6-8 from your school, you can purchase the lift ticket online. If you are unsure about where you stack up against your teammates, just state that you are available and indicate that you will pay by check. If you are selected to race on either a varsity or JV team, then you can pay for the lift ticket either with a check or online in your team snap account. Welch Invitational at Welch Village. Friday, January 13, 2023 Who: We are entering three varsity teams consisting of six athletes each, boys and girls. We are also entering two junior varsity teams of boys and girls, six athletes each. We are bringing 30 boys and 30 girls. You will be absent for a full day of school. STATE YOUR RACE INTENTIONS FOR Jan 13 Welch Invitational AT WELCH VILLAGE HERE. Supplemental Training at Wild Mt Saturday, January 7, 2023 All MAST Athletes Are Encouraged To Attend Training on the longer and some times steeper pitches of Wild Mt. Time courses. Great coaching. A peaceful night on the bluffs bordering the St. Croix River. Register HERE For The Jan 7th Supplemental Training. We are having a wonderful week of training. Keep showing up. The hard work is paying off as I am seeing impressive improvements everyday with the athletes attending the morning sessions. I'm sure that is the case for those of you attending the evening training sessions. Take some time today to watch your videos on Sprongo. Mark Dear MAST Athletes, Coaches and Parents:
First, thank you to all of the athletes and coaches who attended the 2022 Giants Ridge Camp. You braved some very cold temperatures and worked very, very hard on and off the hill to improve your skills. Thank you for your effort, your graciousness, your cooperation, and your willingness to take risks. Randy from Camp Chicagami and Sue who was our hostess at lunch, both told me how much they enjoyed our group and that they look forward to seeing us next year again. I am singing your praises all the time, so it is very nice when other people notice how wonderful you are and bring it to my attention. I am proud of you. Coaches, thank you for making it possible to bring back camp! We could not offer this experience for our athletes without your help. And thank you to the coaches who kept practice going at Hyland last week. I appreciate your dedication to our athletes. Athletes: whether you realize it or not, you improved last week. Training on steep terrain does not always feel good, but it does make you much better in the long run. Hyland should seem a good deal easier this week. Second, I hope everyone saw the results from the Wild Mt Invitational. The Washburn Girls finished FIRST and the Southwest Girls finished THIRD. And the Washburn Boys finished SECOND. What a great start to the competition season. Competition heats up again next week with two races and at least one race on the schedule every week after that. It is time to state your race intentions for the remainder of the season AND sign and submit the liability release waivers to Afton Alps and Welch Village Ski Area. Please take this week of winter break to 1) STATE YOUR RACE INTENTIONS and 2) SIGN THE REQUIRED WAIVERS to AFTON ALPS AND WELCH VILLAGE SKI AREAS (PARENTS NEED TO DO THIS FOR ANY RACERS UNDER AGE 18). PLEASE, SIGN THESE WAIVERS BY SUNDAY, JANUARY 1. I. WaiversAfton Alps Waiver Welch Village Waiver II. Race Intentions I activated links to all of our confirmed races on the calendar. Note that the away races ask you to pay the cost of a lift ticket for that race. All MAST Athletes are encouraged to race in the February 2nd race at Welch Village. There are separate races and medals for varsity and JV athletes. For the first two MEC races, we will be bringing 64 athletes to the race and to the Wild Invite II we will be bringing 40 athletes. These limitations on how many athletes we can bring makes it hard for you to know whether you will be selected to race in any given AWAY race. Nonetheless, all athletes should state their intentions for these away races no matter how you think you stack up against your teammates. I have given you the option of paying by credit card or check. If you are uncertain about your standing on varsity, indicate that you will pay by check. If you are selected to race, you can bring a check to the race to cover your lift ticket fee. If you are not selected to race, I will just delete your registration and you will not be hounded by Team Snap Bill Collectors to pay a fee for a lift ticket you didn’t use. Good Evening MAST Families: Great day at Wild Mt. The race was well run. Our athletes were simply wonderful. Not just their skiing, but their spirit on the hill and support for each other. And their results speak loudly about how far they have come. The Washburn Girls: First Place. The Washburn Boys: Second Place. The Southwest Girls: Third Place. Three of the six podium spots were taken by our skiers. Excellent. But there is also room for improvement, so that is good news as well. Here are some other highlights. Gabby Harritt finished high on the podium in third place and Lucy Renz had a breakthrough performance finishing in fifth place. Simon Showalter-Loch was our top finisher on the boys' side in thirteenth place and close behind in 15th was Levi Ehlers. All of the hard work you put in working the drills to build the skills paid off. It was fun to see our 36 athletes execute good technique through all six seeds. How good? Well, Beckett beat all of the other athletes in the fourth seed and Finn beat all the athletes in the fifth seed. Or look at it this way. Kate Moore started 84th and finished 22nd. Elli George started 85th and finished 27th. Ingrid Hartzell started 101st and finished 35th. Julia Westphal started 125th and finished 34th. Mila Voyakin started 126th and finished 42nd. Maddie Graff started 127th and finished 52nd. Julia Maurice was an alternate who got called into duty at the last minute and finished 53rd. For the boys, Beckett Wedren started 92nd and finished 22nd. Finn Cherveny started 120th and finished 25th. Evan Byron started 149th and finished 43rd. These are outstanding results from our late seed skiers on a track that deteriorated quickly to toss and jostle our athletes in every direction possible. They rode the bull beautifully. Thank you to all the coaches and parents who did outstanding work in support of our athletes. A great first start. Let's keep busting our rears to continue the improvement growth. Giants Ridge Attached is a packing list for Giants Ridge. Please tune your skis and leave a nice layer of wax un-scraped for the ride up to camp. Please pack your skis and poles in a ski bag if you have one. Camp Chicagami sets up a large space for us to tune our skis. We are in need of tuning tables, vices and irons. Please let me know if you have a table that you can and will bring to camp. And if you have an iron and vices, bring them. Calling all singers, musicians, poets, magicians, storytellers, mimes, comedians, contortionists, dancers and anyone who can think up an act: enter the MAST Talent Show scheduled for our final night at camp. You are welcome to bring your instrument to camp. If anyone has an electric piano they can send with us, we could use one. The piano we have been using for the last 10 years in now retired as the family has graduated out of MAST. Meet the bus at Washburn at 6am. Team Snap Refunds Anyone who paid for a lift ticket to Wild for the Wild Invite and anyone who paid for the now cancelled Supplemental Training on Dec 17th should have received notice of a refund from Team Snap yesterday. Please watch your credit card account to make sure you received your refund. This may take a couple of weeks unfortunately. Let me know if you do not receive your refund. Coffee/Salsa Pick Up Reminder Finally, don't forget to pick up any coffee and/or salsa you ordered tomorrow between 2 and 3PM at Fuller Park on 48th and Grand. For those not able to stop by on Saturday, your orders can be picked up at Hope White’s home at 4945 Clinton Avenue South on Sunday, December 18th from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. That's all for now. Week Six and winter break are around the corner. Take advantage of the opportunities to ski. If you are going West to ski over break, use the time to work hard on your skills. And have fun. Send pictures. Make us all jealous. Sleep well. Mark
Good Evening Wild Invite Athletes and Parents:
Tonight I was informed that the MPS Transportation Department was unable to secure a trailer to carry our skis to Wild tomorrow. The MAST trailer is going up early to get the tent set up. I estimate that I can carry 25 skis in my pick up. 7 of our 42 athletes are riding with a parent. So I need to know if 10 parents are coming up early enough who could carry their athlete's skis in their car and arrive no later than 8am? Please send me a text if you are able to carry your athlete's skis and poles and get to Wild in time to join the team for warm ups-- 612-275-8392. Please arrive at Washburn no later than 6:10. The bus is scheduled to arrive at 6:15am. If you are running late, text me or call me. 612-275-8392 Thanks Mark Good Morning, MAST!
This email is primarily for parents and athletes who will be attending the Wild Invitational race tomorrow, but feel free to pitch in if you feel like taking a leisurely ride to Wild Mountain at 6AM Friday! 1. Volunteer Sign-ups: Our responsibilities are different for Invitational races than other races. Generally, the host team covers the race functions, so our attention shifts to “athlete support.” With this in mind, there are a number of roles that need filling for Friday’s race. Please see sign-up link below if you are a parent of Wild Invite racer and pitch in if you can. https://signup.com/go/oidLUOF 2. Camp Chairs: If you plan to attend the race, please bring a folding camp chair (Or two. Or a sideline bench) for your athlete. These come in handy to sit down for lunch, adjust boots, warm up by the camp fire. Athletes can’t bring them on the bus, so throw them in your car if you’re heading to the race to support. 3. Transportation Home: The coach bus (loading at 6:05AM at Washburn) is one-way transportation, so you will need to arrange for a ride home for your athlete. If you don’t have one coordinated and need help, reach out to Aaron Cherveny ([email protected]) and he can help line you up with someone who can get your athlete home or back to Washburn safely. On that note, please reach out TO Aaron if you know you’ll have extra space to spare for an athlete in need of a ride. Thanks for all your support! Hello,
Pizza will be served in the MAST tent tomorrow for all athletes attending the Wild Invite. See you on the hill! Dear MAST Families:
Thank you for your participation in this year’s individual fundraisers. Coffee and salsa have arrived! If you placed orders for either the coffee or salsa fundraisers, please stop by the Fuller Rec Center upper level this Saturday, December 17th from 2:00-3:00 to pick up your orders. For those not able to stop by on Saturday, your orders can be picked up at Hope White’s home at 4945 Clinton Avenue South on Sunday, December 18th from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. See you Saturday after practice at Fuller. Your Individual Fundraiser Chairs |
