MAST Update Week 3
Sunday, November 28, 2021 Dear MAST Athletes, Coaches and Parents: I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a restful break. We are two weeks into the season, and we have held six sessions of dryland training and two on-snow sessions at Hyland. We are off to a strong start. On-snow training continues this week at Hyland and Supplemental Training begins on Saturday, Dec 4. Today is the last day to purchase MAST apparel. We have our first race on Monday, Dec 13. Have You Ordered MAST Apparel Yet? We have a very short window of time to order MAST apparel this year due to the supply chain issues our nation is facing. So.... today is the last day to place your order. Team jackets, t-shirts, caps and hats, pullovers, sweats, puffer jackets, pajamas, and much more. One note: the puffer jacket comes in both a men’s and women’s design. Check out this year's offerings at: https://minneapolisalpineskiteam.sportssignup.com/MySportsStore. Questions? Email [email protected] On Snow Training Continues This Week Hyland has limited runs open for skiing, but they plan to remain open this week. To relieve some pressure on lift lines we will be skiing in PODS this week over three different practice sessions. Your assigned pod corresponds to your grade level. So 7th graders are in Pod 7. Monday through Thursday:
Meet your coaches outside on the south end of the chalet in front of the middle chairlift at practice start time. A reminder: wear your mask in the chalet and I recommend that you wear it while in the lift line as well. You need to continue to be on guard against this terrible virus. Minimize your chalet use please. And no chalet use during practice unless you need to warm up, which you should not need to do this week due to the warm temperatures. Supplemental Training Begins Saturday, December 4, 2021 We have two scheduled supplemental training sessions in December. Saturday, Dec 4 and 11. We hope to be introducing stubby gates, brushes and panel gates. Much depends on the weather. The cost of each session is $60 and includes bus transportation and lift ticket. Bring a sack lunch to minimize time spent in the chalet. Bring a water bottle as well. The deadline to register for a Supplemental Training Session is the Thursday prior to the S.T. date: Dec 2nd for the Dec 4th training or Dec 9th for the Dec 11th training. However, if the bus fills before the deadline, we will close registration. To REGISTER for the Dec 4 and Dec 11 Supplemental Training Sessions, CLICK HERE: SUPPLEMENTAL TRAINING REGISTRATION or https://minneapolisalpineskiteam.sportssignup.com/site/ Have You Stated Your Race Intentions For December Yet? I would like to invite everyone to fill out their RACE INTENTIONS for TWO race dates on the calendar: DEC 13 AND DEC 17. Monday, December 13 at Hyland. This is an afternoon race. I realize that you will have had very little time skiing in gates before this race. Please do not let this fact keep you from racing on the 13th. The race on the 13th is designed to introduce you to racing.
Friday, December 17 at Wild Mt. We will be entering six boys and six girls for each of our three teams: SW, Washburn and MAST—so 36 skiers in all plus four alternates. This race takes place during the day. You will miss the last day of school before break. So, you need to look ahead at your academic schedule and deadlines to make certain you can miss school on the 17th before submitting a race intention for that date. Again, all skiers should state their race intentions (availability) for both races. Do not fill out your Race Intentions for any races in January yet. Here is a link to state your race intentions for Dec 13 and Dec 17: RACE INTENTIONS. MAST Instructional Resources For the first six days of on-snow training, we will focus on developing three of the six fundamental skills in the US Ski Team’s Fundamentals Skills Pyramid.
https://www.mplsalpineski.org/technique--tactics.html Scroll down and watch the video titled: Six Slalom Skiing Fundamentals. Also, note that there are two pyramids posted on the page. If you click on one of the fundamental skills in the TOP pyramid, you will be directed to a set of videos that will expand your understanding of that skill. Today and over the next week, I would like to strongly encourage everyone to watch the videos listed when you click on the Balance and Stance, Early Lower Leg Engagement, and Outside Ski to Outside Ski blocks of the Pyramid. Yes, that’s a lot of videos, but they will introduce you to the drills you are learning in practice this week. You can also find these same drills in the MAST Athletes and Coaches Folder in Google Drive: MAST Athletes and Coaches Google Drive Folder Here you will find two folders.
On Snow Training Schedule Going Forward I still plan to send out a long-range training calendar, mixing pods and training times a bit more. Stay tuned. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these first weeks on snow. Until Hyland opens fully we will need to maintain flexibility. See you on Monday. Mark Conway [email protected] 612-275-8392 Good Morning MAST athletes, coaches, and families,

Tuesday, November 23, 2021 Dear MAST Athletes, Coaches and Parents: We have had five strong days of dryland training. One more to go. 4:30-6PM at Washburn Stadium today (Tuesday). Temps warm up today, but continue to dress in layers and bring gloves, hat, jacket, and wear layers. It cools off quickly between 4:30 and 6. On Snow Training Begins This Week Hyland OPENS on Friday for the season. We will offer on-snow training on Friday and Saturday.
A reminder: wear your mask in the chalet and I recommend that you wear it while in the lift line as well. You need to continue to be on guard against this terrible virus. Minimize your chalet use please. And no chalet use during practice unless you need to warm up. MAST Instructional Resources As Daniel shared with you in our Orientation to the 2021-22 Season Webinar last month, we have a lot of resources online that will deepen your understanding of the skills and movements we will be asking you to perform daily. Use these resources. For the next week and a half, we will focus on developing three of the six fundamental skills in the US Ski Team’s Fundamentals Skills Pyramid.
Scroll down and watch the video titled: Six Slalom Skiing Fundamentals. Also, note that there are two pyramids posted on the page. If you click on one of the fundamental skills in the TOP pyramid, you will be directed to a set of videos that will expand your understanding of that skill. Pretty cool, eh? Over the next week, I would like to strongly encourage everyone to watch the videos listed when you click on the Balance and Stance, Early Lower Leg Engagement, and Outside Ski to Outside Ski blocks of the Pyramid. Yes, that’s a lot of videos, but these will teach you something useful, not just entertain you. Thank you to MAST alumni Ben Anderson for creating our technique and tactics page. Wonderful work. Finally, you should all have received a link in a previous email to engage with our MAST Athletes and Coaches folder in google-drive. I sent the link to your MPS email and you should be able to access it there. If you can’t find it, here is a link as well: MAST Athletes and Coaches Google Drive Folder Here you will find two folders.
The second folder contains videos of drills developed by US Ski and Snowboard. These videos will deepen your understanding of how to execute the drills. On Snow Training Schedule Going Forward Hyland sent out the lane schedule last night. I will need a couple of days to look it over and create a training schedule for the weeks ahead. Look for an email with an updated training schedule in your inbox this weekend. Race Intentions I would like to invite everyone to fill out their RACE INTENTIONS for TWO race dates on the calendar: DEC 13 AND DEC 17. Monday, December 13 at Hyland. This is an afternoon race. Middle school students will need an early release from school that day. Some of our high school skiers will also need an early release. All MAST skiers are eligible to race on the 13th. Whew! Enough information for now. See you this afternoon. Mark 612-275-8392 Good Afternoon Everyone: Attached is a roster of athletes/families with MAST for 2021-22. THIS IS IMPORTANT: READ AND ABIDE! Too many of you are coming to dryland without a hat or gloves or jacket or even, gasp, long pants. It is cold and windy today, but we will be training outdoors in the stadium. As long as we are actively moving, we should be able to stay warm if you have the proper layers and gear to begin with. It will not work to wear a single sweatshirt. Overdress and take off layers as you get too hot. Plus, when you finish the workout you want to put on the warm clothes that you shed. Show the coaches that you are highly intelligent and come to dryland dressed properly. See you at 4:30 or before. Under the lights. I spoke with a rep from Hyland today. They are hoping to open the day after Thanksgiving, but this is not guaranteed. My dad emailed me to tell me that the guns are blazing... he still lives two blocks east of the ski area. I would like to hold practices on Friday and Saturday IF HYLAND DOES OPEN. No word yet on the hours of operation. Sometimes they open at 4 and sometimes they open in the morning and close at 5. So, just know that we might be skiing a week from tomorrow if you will be in town. This means that we will have dryland Monday and Tuesday of next week. If Hyland does not open on Friday or Saturday, we will next practice on the Monday after Thanksgiving break, Nov. 29th. Finally, if you have not submitted a MPS Transportation Waiver, either in person at season pass pick up or via USPS, please get this done. You can mail the completed form to: Mpls Alpine/4800 Harriet Ave S/ Mpls 55419. Thank you. Mark 612-275-8392
Dear MAST Parents: I received the following email chain from Giovan Jenkins, the athletic director at Washburn at 4:54pm tonight. This is the first written communication I have received from someone in the district related to the Covid 19 Vaccination Mandate. Mr. Jenkin's email includes a forwarded email from the MPS District Athletic Director from Friday, Nov. 12 at 12:55PM and an email from Dr. Palmer at Washburn. I have not heard from any of the other high school athletic directors as of 6:55pm tonight. I am also attaching the resolution passed by the MPS School Board on Tuesday evening. This came to me as an attachment in the email from Mr. Jenkins this afternoon. Please read all of these communications carefully. The covid vaccination mandate only applies to winter sport athletes in MPS. I will let you figure out what it means for you and your athlete. Apparently, the school district has access to your child's covid vaccination records and they are matching those records to everyone who signed up to play a winter sport for a MPS school. I already know that one athlete who was listed as unvaccinated on the district list is in fact fully vaccinated. Mark Conway ___________________________________________________________ Emily Palmer <[email protected]> 5:03 PM (1 hour ago) Thanks, Giovan! I just want to emphasize that everyone should get vaccinated is the district's official position on the issue, so there should be no hesitation when you hear Jenks say: "Please encourage all your student athletes to get vaccinated!" Go ahead & push them. Some kids maybe don't know how to get it - you can help them use the CVS Scheduling link to make an appointment at whatever CVS is most convenient for them. Or they can do it 100 other ways. Just do it. Thanks, everyone! If your student athlete does not report to the athletic department then you will be responsible for getting the test to the student and the student athlete, the athlete will need to produce a negative test to the school nurse or AD office before, they can return to practice or game competition. You will be responsible for keeping the unvaccinated student athletes out of competition if they do not test every week and produce a negative test. When your teams are set, you will be given a list of unvaccinated student athletes, at that time those athletes will need to come to the athletic office sometime during the day (Every Wednesday) and take a rapid covid test. A missed test means no practice or game. This is going to be a very difficult process to coordinate every week until we get all our student athletes vaccinated...Please encourage all your student athletes to get vaccinated! Those of you that do not have tryouts, you will receive names from the list we have currently. I expect this list to grow as the district continues to pull the names of our student athletes. Washburn High School Rapid Covid Testing Day Will Be Wednesday's In The Athletic Office. Please read the attached Requirements as well as the below email from the district AD Fisher. Thank you very much in advance, Together we are better. Based on your feedback at the orientation meeting earlier this week, MPS will be sending out robocalls and emails to unvaccinated athletes. This action will reduce the number of phone calls that you need to make. We have also implemented the following communications: 1. Communication was sent to all MPS families about this new mandate through The Family Update, our weekly newsletter. 2. The District Athletics Pages and Individual School Website Athletic Pages have been updated with information about the new requirement. The robocalls and email messages are currently being translated into our four primary messages and will be sent out via School Messenger. The Communications Department will then receive a report regarding which phone calls or email messages were undeliverable, and Athletic Directors will then need to reach out to those students to ensure that they receive the information about testing. We are also recommending that you print and make available copies of the resolution (which is attached) in the event that people have questions. You can also refer people to the District Athletics page, which has all of the information they need or encourage them to send an email to [email protected]. Please look out for further communication regarding the phone calls that need to be made next week. If you have any questions please reach out to me! Respectfully Submitted; Antony M. MAST Update Week 1: Season Pass Pick Up Night, Fundraising Orders Due, Sprongo, Dryland Training Begins, Waivers, Team Roster Sunday, November 14, 2021 Dear MAST Athletes, Coaches and Parents: Finally, we begin. Hyland is making snow. Temps are getting colder. And we start training together this week. But first.... Season Pass Pick Up: Monday, November 15 from 6-7PM. All MAST athletes should come pick up your Hyland Season Pass between 6 and 7PM tomorrow. You do not need to arrive promptly at 6. Just be sure to be there before... 6:45... A bit more about the evening. We will be taking care of many administrative details tomorrow night. Attached is a SEASON PASS NIGHT CHECKLIST. Print the checklist and bring it with you. We will have copies as well in case you forget it. The point of the checklist is to guide you through the many stations we will have set up. By moving through the stations, we will be able to check off a lot of administrative tasks in one quick hour. And this won’t even take up an hour of your time. If you are selling coffee and salsa in the MAST Individual Fundraiser, bring your sales order forms and payments. The sale ends tomorrow and all forms need to be submitted tomorrow. REMEMBER TO BRING:
MN Ski Areas Association Liability Release Sprongo All new MAST athletes should have received an invitation to join the Mpls Alpine Ski Team Sprongo site. I sent the invitation to your MPS email account. If you did not receive an invitation, send me an email at [email protected]. Be sure to give me your correct email address. You will need to create a MAST Sprongo Account User-Name and Password. I suggest using your personal email account as your username rather than your MPS email account. And use a password that you are willing to share with your parents so they can watch your progress through the season and over the years. This will make them happy so no arguing about it. I also sent invitations to the following returning MAST skiers who do not have a Sprongo account set up. I know you have a lot of video clips from last year sitting as orphans in the many playlists from last season. Unclaimed. Unloved. Unnamed even. Looking to return home. Just like E.T. Show your clips some love. Get yourself set up with a Sprongo account. Some Do Nots:
Dryland Training MAST Strength and Conditioning begins Tuesday, Nov 16 at 4:30PM at Washburn Stadium. Please be on time. I know it might be hard for some of our middle school athletes to make it by 4:30 due to a later school release time. Do your best. Remember:
MAST Athlete-Family Roster and Car Pooling Finally, I am ready to send out a roster of MAST Athletes and Families. However, I am sensitive to sending out a roster to the team with your contact information on it without first giving everyone a chance to OPT OUT of sending this information. The roster will include the following information: Athlete Name- Gender- Grade- School- Address and Zip Parent/Guardian Names-Cell Phone-Email. Parents would have this information for the purpose of forming carpools or seeking advice about the team, or racing, or tuning, or just for reaching out to that really nice parent you met at a race. Please do not use this information for any nefarious reasons. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE LISTED INFORMATION ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY LISTED IN THE ROSTER, PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY AT [email protected] AND I WILL REMOVE YOUR INFORMATION FROM THE ROSTER. PLEASE EMAIL ME BY WEDNESDAY EVENING. I WOULD LIKE TO SEND OUT THE ROSTER ON THURSDAY SO FAMILIES HAVE TIME TO FORM CARPOOLS BEFORE HYLAND OPENS. See you tomorrow evening. Mark Conway 612-275-8392
Good morning Mast parents. As we approach the coming race season, we thought it would be fun to have a casual gathering of Mast parents for drinks and to get to know each other. In the past, we have had pre-season events at a home or other locations. Last year, due to Covid-19, we choose to not do anything. We as a board, have discussed making sure that we are connecting with parents, more often this year. Hopefully we will have some additional parent events to raise money, and get to know each other down the road. I believe there are 44 new athletes this year. That’s a lot of new parents to get to know. This initial event is very casual and is not a fundraiser. Everyone is on their own for drinks and they also have Heggies pizza to order if you like. They have a food truck, but unfortunately, they have yet to hire a chef. A sign of the times it would seem. Wild Mind is located at 6031 Pillsbury Ave, in Minneapolis. It is a brewery and they have a large outdoor area, with a tent. Hopefully they will have some fire pits going. There is also plenty of space inside, if you choose to be inside. The weather looks decent with temps in the high 30’s to low 40’s. The board will try to be wearing Mast gear and I believe we will have name tags. Hopefully, we will have a good showing. We did something similar after the high school soccer season, and people had fun. We look forward to seeing you next Thursday.
Mark Harritt Update #8: Vaccination Mandate, Sprongo, and Waivers Update Wednesday, November 10, 2021 Dear MAST Athletes, Coaches and Parents: Hopefully, everyone has submitted all the required MPS/MSHSL paperwork to your high school AD or registered online. The Athletic Directors are scrambling to “CLEAR” all winter sports athletes. I have not received any communication regarding who is cleared at this point. When I do, I will pass this information along. I. Vaccinations and the MPS School Board I spoke with Dave Wicker today. Mr. Wicker is the Assistant Athletic Director for MPS Athletics. He also oversees alpine skiing for the school district. He informed me that the MPS School Board voted last night to mandate vaccinations for MPS students and coaches, paid and volunteer. I do not know whether this includes students under 12, but it does include anyone participating in a high school sport. So, all MAST athletes and coaches must be fully vaccinated as of Monday, November 15, 2021. Yes, you read that correctly. Fully vaccinated. Both doses unless you received the Johnson and Johnson. Please don’t shoot the messenger. If you choose not to be vaccinated, you must submit a weekly negative covid test to participate. Test results should be sent to Dave Wicker at [email protected]. Please do not contact Mr. Wicker to complain or comment about the decision. He is just the messenger and I appreciate the heads up so at least I can let you know possibly before the district formally communicates with you, Just because I don’t want the fun news to end quite so soon, I thought I would also write about all the waivers we get to sign this year. II. Ski Area Waivers Nearly every ski area around the country is now requiring skiers to complete and sign some version of a liability release or waiver. Minnesota ski areas are no exception. We need parents and athletes to fill out the following three waivers. Unfortunately, there may be more to sign in a couple of weeks. For now, please get these three waivers completed and submitted. The first two are attached and you can turn them in at the Hyland season pass pick up event on Monday, Nov. 15th. A. Mpls Public Schools Transportation Waiver MPS is requiring all coaches to have a copy of every student’s transportation waiver in hand should we need to utilize personal vehicles to transport athletes this winter. Bus drivers are in short supply this year and we may have a last minute need to transport athletes in personal cars should a bus not show up for a trip or simply be unavailable. Please bring this waiver completed and signed to the Hyland Season Pass pick up on Nov 15. The Transportation Waiver is attached. If you can’t attend for some reason, please mail the MPS Transportation Waiver to me: Mpls Alpine 4800 Harriet Ave Mpls, MN 55419 Please do NOT submit them the electronically. I don’t want to spend my time printing out waivers. Sorry. B. Hyland/Three Rivers Park District This waiver is attached. Please download, print and complete this waiver. You can bring it with you on Monday, Nov. 15th to the Hyland Season Pass Pick Up. You will need to submit this waiver in order to get your season pass. C. MN Ski Areas Association This waiver is completed online and will cover you for Welch Village Ski Area and possibly other ski areas in Minnesota. All MAST athletes need to complete this waiver. Here is a link: MN Ski Areas Association Liability Release III. Sprongo This topic is much more fun and will bring you hours of lasting joy and improve your performance on the race hill should you follow through. MAST uses a video sharing service called Sprongo. Sprongo was created by a former ski racer who has a deep understanding of how performance can be improved through visual learning. The MAST coaches shoot video clips of our athletes in training and sometimes at races. The video clips taken at a practice or race is then uploaded to the playlist created for that day on the MAST Sprongo account. The only people who can watch those clips are the coaches and athletes and anyone you give your username and password to. Otherwise, video of you skiing is inaccessible to the general public. Each clip can be tagged to the athlete featured in the video. All video uploaded and tagged will be listed in both the playlist of the day and in the athlete’s Sprongo account. Consequently, when an athlete is a senior, he or she can watch video taken when in 7th grade. Pretty fun to see how much improvement you have made. Mostly though, the coaches want you to study your video and that of the better skiers on the team. Coaches talk into the camera and give you tips as they are filming you so that you can remember the advice you were given that day in practice. It has been a tremendous coaching tool for our skiers over the years. I want you to use it. Besides, we pay for this service... so don't waste your money. By Friday evening, I will have sent an invitation through Sprongo to our new teammates to become members of the Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team Sprongo Site. The invitation will be sent to your MPS email address. Please check your MPS email account for the invitation to join Sprongo. If you are a returning MAST skier who does not have a Sprongo account set up for yourself, let me know and I will send you an invitation to join as well. If you have a Sprongo account, please make sure you know your username and password and make sure it works. Parents: Please DO NOT set up an account in your name or for yourself. Some Dos:
Three Do Nots:
IV. Leftover Swap Sale Equipment In my tiny basement, I have a number of pairs of boots and skis that did not sell back in October at our equipment swap. I need the space back. Please contact me at 612-275-8392 to make arrangements to pick up your unsold equipment. Thank you. V. Reminders:
Mark Conway 612-275-8392 PS. Hyland is in desperate need of employees. If you know anyone who would like a job this winter, please send them to Hyland. They need people to fill EVERYTHING! They are always short lift operators. That is the reason that they fail to open the rope tow on time. Lack of lift attendants.
Good Evening MAST Coaches, Athletes, Parents:
A reminder that we are holding our Orientation to the 2021-22 Alpine Season tomorrow (Sunday, Nov 7) night at 5PM. We are using my MPS supplied Google Meets account. This should make it easier for our athletes to log in. The meeting is directed at both athletes and parents. I would ask that at least one parent attend the Orientation. We are covering a lot of ground, or should I say, SNOW? Okay, that was really bad. Hopefully, all athletes have received an invitation to their MPS email inbox. If you RSVP YES to the Orientation, I believe the link will also appear in your MPS Google Drive Calendar. Maybe the link appears even if you didn't RSVP YES. Just in case you can't find it, here is a link: meet.google.com/wuq-dgea-qzd I cannot guarantee that you will be able to access the webinar if you do not sign in using your MPS email. I did add all parent emails to the google meet "add guests" cue. Hopefully you can easily access the meeting. If you cannot, please log in with your athlete if possible. See you tomorrow night. Mark Conway 612-275-8392 Good Morning Everyone: Just a quick reminder that the high school athletic trainers are administering the concussion baseline test today and tomorrow. Here is the schedule: South: Nov 3 @ 4:30pm Roosevelt: Nov 3 @ 4:00pm Washburn and SW: Nov 3 and 4 3:30pm and 4:30pm There are 25 spots at SW and 20 at Washburn. Do not add your name to the sign up if all 25 spots are filled at SW and all 20 spots are filled at Washburn. Select another time or day. Attached is a map of SW high school for those who have not been there before as well as the MAST concussion baseline testing plan. Good luck and thanks for doing this everyone. The health and development of your brain is important to me. Mar
