UPDATE AND CHANGES TO CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING
Tuesday, October 31, 2023 Good Noonday MAST Athletes and Families: We had to make a few changes to the ImPACT Concussion Baseline Testing schedule this morning. First, we are asking Washburn and Southwest students to SIGN UP for their testing session. Southwest only has 18 testing stations so we want people to sign up for 1 of 18 testing spots available on each date. Washburn also has limited testing facilities so only 20 athletes can sign up for each testing date offered. There is plenty of space for the Roosevelt athletes to test on Wednesday. No need to sign up, but please show up. If you cannot make it, please contact Ms. Sonya Eikum, the athletic trainer at Roosevelt to schedule testing for yourself. Second, we are canceling the November 8th testing date at Southwest and replacing it with testing on Monday, November 6th. If the SW Volleyball team wins their section championship tomorrow night, the SW Athletic Trainer, Ms. GleichWacher, will be need to attend the team’s first game of the State Tournament on the afternoon of the 8th. Go Lakers! Third, attached is a roster of everyone who needs to take the concussion baseline test. If you were on the team last year and you have registered to ski with MAST this year, but your name is NOT on the list, you do NOT need to take the test this year. I am working with the Washburn Athletic Trainer, Mr. Dahle, to set up testing at Washburn. He just needs to confirm that we can use the testing space. Our TENTATIVE DATES AND TIMES ARE: 1. Monday, November 6 at 3:30PM 2. Wednesday, November 8 at 3:30PM Location: Orange Lab located in the media center on the top floor of Washburn High School. I WOULD ASK WASHBURN STUDENTS TO WAIT TO SIGN UP FOR TESTING AT WASHBURN UNTIL YOU RECEIVE A FOLLOW UP EMAIL FROM ME CONFIRMING THAT WE HAVE THE SPACE RESERVED FOR TESTING. Please follow this link to sign up for a day and time to take your concussion baseline test: Alpine Sign Up For Concussion Baseline Testing I would ask the Washburn students to wait until you hear back from me later today. I need to confirm that the testing facility is available on the 6th and 8th. I will know more after 4PM today. Finally, here is a reminder about tomorrow's testing for Roosevelt athletes at Roosevelt. Sanford and Roosevelt Alpine Skiers Concussion Testing When: Wednesday, November 8 at 4PM (for middle school and high school athletes) Trainer: Sonya Eikum Directions: My office is door 3A from the outside, or 159 from the inside. Walk past Door 4 and you will see a ramp. Go up the ramp. My door is at the top of the ramp. We will meet at my office and then go up to the computer lab together and take the test. Sorry for the changes, but this will be the first of many this season. I am certain of that. Life Character Skill Lesson: Be Flexible and Adapt to the Terrain. Reach out me or your high school athletic trainer if you have questions. Mark Conway 612-275-8392 Good Afternoon:

Mark Alpine Concussion Baseline Testing Announcement
Monday, October 30, 2023 Hello MAST Athletes and Families: Sustaining a concussion while skiing is one of the risks that ski racers face with every run down a slope. The days of getting back up and returning to play immediately after having your “bell rung” are over. State law requires that coaches and trainers remove anyone suspected of having a concussion from athletic activity of any type. To return to play, the athlete must be assessed by a medical professional trained in concussion management. For Minneapolis students, the athletic trainer at your school must be involved in the post-concussion management and your return to play protocol. One of the tools that physicians and athletic trainers utilize to assess whether someone is healthy to begin the return to play protocol is an online cognitive test called the Impact Concussion Baseline Test. Athletes take this test when the brain is healthy and alert. Following a concussion and after the athlete’s concussion symptoms have resolved, the trainer may ask you to retake the Impact Concussion Baseline Test. The trainer can then compare your post-concussion test results to your baseline test results and determine if you are still suffering any cognitive deficits. Even though your symptoms have gone away and you feel healed, your brain may still be injured. You do not want to suffer a second concussion when your brain is still healing from the first. So, the baseline test is designed to give health professionals one more tool to assess how well your brain has healed following a concussion. Who needs to take the test? 1. Anyone who is skiing with MAST for the first time and has not taken the test for another sport during the 2022-23 school year or this Fall. 2. If you took the test in 2021-2022, you need to re-take it. The trainers at Southwest, Washburn and Roosevelt have given me some dates for our athletes to take the concussion baseline test. Anthony and Southwest Students Test Date 1(for high school athletes): Wednesday, November 1 at 3:30PM. Test Date 2 (for middle school athletes): Wednesday, November 8 at 4PM. Test Date 3(for anyone who still needs to take the test): Monday, November 13 at 3:45PM Trainer: Kelsey GleichWacker Here are instructions about where the testing will be held in Southwest. Directions: Location is at Southwest HS, in the College and Career Center. It’s the room adjacent to the counselors’ offices. If you come in the front entrance, go all the way to the back and left of the cafeteria. Go up the half flight of stairs, straight ahead is a room with lots of windows, go to the right of that room and immediately to the left is 3 steps. Go down the steps and through the door on the left. Sanford and Roosevelt Wednesday, November 8 at 4PM (for middle school and high school athletes) Trainer: Sonya Eikum Directions: My office is door 3A from the outside, or 159 from the inside. Walk past Door 4 and you will see a ramp. Go up the ramp. My door is at the top of the ramp. We will meet at my office and then go up to the computer lab together and take the test. Justice Page, Washburn, Edison and South I am waiting to hear back from the athletic trainers from these schools regarding dates and times for concussion baseline testing. I will send a follow up update as soon as I know these dates. Two weeks to go! Are you registered with MAST? MPS? Do you have all of the equipment you need? Did you secure your season pass to Hyland? Are you getting your body in shape? Are you fundraising? Mark Conway 612-275-8392 [email protected] MAST Update #8

MAST UPDATE #6 Monday, October 16, 2023 Hello MAST Athletes, Parents, Friends, and Coaches: The last two weeks have been very busy. The generosity of this community is inspiring. Let me start by thanking our Board President, Matt McConville, who has been tirelessly and enthusiastically leading, cajoling, cheering, and following through on our steady stream of fundraising efforts for the least three plus years. Thank you to Aaron Cherveny and Alison Krueger for your work on the golf tournament. Thank you to everyone who made a donation to the silent auction. Thank you to Carrie and Tommy Bagnaud and Phoenix and Levi Ehers for the tremendously successful fundraising dinner they produced for the benefit of MAST last Monday in their beautiful restaurant, Mr. Paul’s Supper Club. Having worked in restaurants for many years in my youth, I have a sense of how much work this was for them. I know that you had to work multiple days to prep for this, and then work on you day off. So thank you Tommy and Carrie. And thank you to all of the MAST athletes who hosted, served, bussed, dish washed, and did all of the grunt work of operating a restaurant. Finally, thank you to all of you for coming out to support our team. We have a lot of administrative tasks to accomplish before the start of the season. I. Have you registered with MAST? Please keep those registrations coming in. ’23-’24 MAST Registration II. Registration With Mpls Public Schools Athletics Is Open! Registration for MPS Winter Sports Opens On Monday, October 16th, not October 26th as I previously announced. This is an online registration. You will need to pay the $75 MPS Athletics Activity Fee and complete all the forms before your high school athletic director will clear you to participate. I WOULD ASK ALL ATHLETES TO REGISTER FOR ALPINE SKIING BEFORE NOVEMBER 1ST SO THAT YOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HAS AMPLE TIME TO CLEAR YOU TO PARTICIPATE BY THE OPENING DAY OF THE ALPINE SKI SEASON. Here is a link for more information about MPS Winter Sports Registration: https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/ Pay particular attention to all of the links in the upper right corner of this page. Note that there are separate links to access the various forms you need to complete and the portal to pay the Activity Fee. III. Reminder: Have you purchased your Season Pass to Hyland Hills? Every athlete needs a ’23-’24 Hyland Hills Season Pass, which can be purchased through MAST or online directly from Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Hills. To purchase your pass through MAST, send a check made payable to Mpls Alpine in the amount of $474 to: Hope White 4945 Clinton Ave South Mpls, MN 55419-5660 Deadline for ordering your pass through MAST: Sunday, October 29. IV. MAST Apparel Sale Closes October 23—Don’t Forget To Place Your Order. MAST APPAREL STORE V. Have You Secured All Of The Equipment You Need For The Season? Thank you to the coaches and parents who assisted me with the MAST Equipment Swap on Saturday. After all the rain we got on Friday, it turned out to be a really pleasant morning. A special thanks to Cyrus Vahhaji for his tremendously helpful work managing and editing the Equipment Swap page on our website. That work continues. Please remember to send Cyrus an email informing him if and when your equipment has sold. This will help him keep the equipment swap page up to date: [email protected] And if you would still like to post equipment on the MAST Equipment Swap page, please follow these easy instructions: https://www.mplsalpineski.org/mast-equipment-swap.html The other option for finding used equipment is to attend the swap at Hyland at the end of October. I recommend trying to get there at the opening bell on Friday to find the best selection. Hyland//Team Gilboa: Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 VI. Looking Ahead: Parent Race Worker Training Parents, please set aside the evening of Sunday, December 3 at 7PM for an online RACE VOLUNTEER TRAINING. You will learn how races are managed and officiated, how to judge whether a racer has properly passed through a race gate, and what role each volunteer plays in the execution of a slalom race. Why do you need to know this? Because ski races do not happen without a large number of parent volunteers. Even at the Olympic and World Cup level, dozens of volunteers are needed to work the race. The same is true for our races. We need over 20 volunteers to work races. Attached is a list of race day roles and a brief description of each. I invite you to get a jump start on learning about these volunteer positions. I will be asking for your help filling these roles for each of our races this winter. So much more to come... Enjoy the break coming up. Mark Conway. 612-275-8392
