Happy Halloween.
I just discovered this short video from Deb Armstrong that she created in the last week. She gives us an insiders view of the opening World Cup race in Soelden, Austria. Deb won Gold at the 1984 Olympics in Giant Slalom as a 20 year old. She now makes fantastic instructional videos for races. Last year, we started directing you to watch Deb's videos. This year, we will not only direct you to watch her videos, we will be administering tests and giving out grades. You will not get into a good college if you fail these tests. Coach Will, can you post this video on our website as well? Everyone: Coach Will already posted Mikaela's winning runs from Soelden at www.mplsalpineski.org. Scroll to the bottom of the page to view. She is technically the best female skier of all time, and possible the best in either gender. And if you want to become a student of the sport of skiing in general and ski racing specifically, subscribe to Deb Armstrong's youtube channel. She is a master teacher. You will find that your MAST coaches will be saying the same things to you all season long, but with a lot more background noise and distractions and we will be talking with frozen lips and you will be wearing a helmet to make it hard for you to hear us eloquently express our ski racing knowledge. Here is the link to her Deb Armstrong's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpzqLEPUeIM&ab_channel=DebArmstrong Don't forget to sell coffee and salsa this week, get registered with MPS Athletics, and take your concussion baseline test. To those of you who created testing spots #21, 22 and beyond at Washburn: You need to change your time or date. There are only 20 computers in the testing space. That's why there were only 20 sign up spots. Have a great week everyone. Mark Update #7 (Oct. 30 2021): Season Pass Confirmation; MPS Registration Reminder; MAST IS FULL!10/31/2021
MAST UPDATE #7
SATURDAY, October 30, 2021 Dear MAST Athletes, Parents, and Coaches: Registration is closed. I feel badly about needing to turn away students, but we have reached capacity and then some. We are welcoming 44 new skiers onto the team. We have a lot to do in the next two weeks to be sure we are ready to ski the moment Hyland is open. EVERYONE needs to read these updates closely and take any action requested immediately. 1. Open the attached roster and look for your name. Make sure that your name appears under either columns J/K or N/O and the the information communicated is accurate. Let me know TODAY if anything is inaccurate 2. Are you set up with race equipment: skis, boots, poles, helmet, goggles, protective gear, socks, jackets, snowpants, tuning equipment....If not, you have two weeks to get these things together. Equipment is still available on the website. 3. Register with MPS Athletics. Deadline: November 1. If you wait longer, you are at risk of not being cleared by your AD to start practice on November 15. The ADs have to clear HUNDREDS of students before they can start practicing. This takes time on their part. You can't just waltz into the ADs office on Nov 13 with all the forms and expect to be cleared over the weekend. So, get this done now. WARNING TO VARSITY ATHLETES: ANYONE NOT CLEARED BY NOVEMBER 15TH WILL BE INELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION FOR ENTRY IN THE WILD MT INVITATIONAL ON DEC 17. 4. Don't forget to sign up for Concussion Baseline Testing on Nov 3 at SW, Washburn, South, and Roosevelt or Nov 4 at SW and Washburn only. 5. Don't forget to attend the MAST Full Team Orientation on Sunday, November 7th at 5PM. Look for an invitation and link in your MPS email and calendar this week. Parents, please watch the Orientation with your athlete. 6. Be sure to attend the Season Pass Pick Up on Monday, November 15 from 6-7PM at Hyland. 7. Dryland begins Tuesday, November 16 from 4:30-6PM at Washburn Stadium. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. 8. Sell Urban Ventures Coffee and MinneSalsa Salsa to raise money for supplemental training, camp, apparel, banquet and possible lift tickets for away races. 9. Get your equipment and ski clothing organized. Try everything on to make sure it fits. Have it ready to go and use on short notice. 10. Watch for an email this week inviting you to set up a Sprongo Account for yourself. If you are returning athlete, open your Sprongo account and watch some of your more recent videos. Take notes. Analyze your skiing and set some early season goals for yourself. If you don't know how to accomplish any of the above, consult our website. Everything you need to know and do is posted there. Two weeks to lift off. Are you ready? Enjoy your weekend. It is a beautiful day. Go exercise. That's what I'm going to go do. Mark Conway 612-275-8392 Good Noon Day MAST Families!
1. The captains have decided to cancel today's Captains' Practice due to the uncertain weather. NO CAPTAINS PRACTICE TODAY, THURSDAY, OCT. 27TH. 2. URGENT, URGENT, URGENT! CONCUSSION TESTING NEXT WEEK. RESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY! Concussion Baseline Testing For MAST Athletes: Ski racing is a contact sport. You will make violent contact with gates, but hopefully with your hands and shins. You will make contact with the snow, but hopefully gently and on your rear end. Unfortunately, there is always the risk of making contact with your head on the snow, a gate, or even another skier or snowboarder. This means that as a ski racer, you face a small but dangerous risk of suffering a concussion during your career. Wearing a helmet doesn't necessarily lower this risk, but it helps. If you do suffer a concussion, it is vitally important that you only return to play when your brain is fully healed. And the only person who can determine when your brain is healed is a health care provider who is specifically trained in concussion management. One of the tools that a health care provider might utilize to determine how well your brain has recovered is something called a concussion baseline test. Here is how it works. The athlete takes a test on a computer that is specially design to measure different areas of brain function WHEN YOUR BRAIN IS HEALTHY. Then, after a concussion and after all your symptoms have resolved, the health care provider might have you take the concussion baseline test a second time. Results from the second test will be compared to the results from the first test. If they results line up, your provider then has additional evidence that your brain has healed satisfactorily for you to begin the "return to play" protocol. So, ALL MAST skiers need to take a concussion baseline test. Note: If you played soccer or football or volleyball this fall for MPS you most likely already took the test and you do not need to retake it. The tests are good for two years. All MAST skiers who did not take the test this fall are due to take the test this year. No tests were administered last year so we need to get everyone tested NOW. The MPS athletic trainers are actually employed by TRIA, so your tests will be accessible through TRIA by your athletic trainer should you need to re-take the test down the road. So, we have an URGENT and IMMEDIATE need for all MAST athletes to take the concussion baseline test. Here is how this is going to happen. Please read this carefully and act now. The athletic trainers at Southwest, Washburn, South and Roosevelt have all set up time NEXT WEEK for alpine athletes to take the test at their high school. There are a limited number of computers available at each school so you need to pre-register to reserve a computer. South athletes can take the test at 4:30 at South on November 3. Roosevelt athletes can take the test at 4:00 at Roosevelt on November 3. Washburn and Southwest athletes have two dates and two times to choose from. 3:30 and 4:30 on Wednesday, Nov 3 and Thursday, Nov 4. The 4:30 time slot is for our seventh and eighth graders. Senior high students should select the 3:30PM testing time. Below is more information about testing at each testing site. First though, sign up and reserve a testing time for yourself. CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING SIGN UP HERE EACH SCHOOL HAS ITS OWN SIGN UP SHEET. SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE AND LOOK FOR YOUR HIGH SCHOOL'S TAB. OPEN YOUR SCHOOL'S SIGN-UP SHEET BY CLICKING ON THE TAB FOR YOUR HIGH SCHOOL. SIGN UP. PLEASE DO NOT EDIT ANY INFORMATION EXCEPT YOUR OWN. I need everyone to sign up for a testing time, unless you already took the test in August or September, 2021. If you absolutely cannot make it to your assigned testing time, then you need to contact the athletic trainer at your high school and make arrangements to take the test at another time on another date. Here is more information about your school’s testing plan. Thank you to Hope White, Mike Isensee and Kirsten Arbeiter for your great work setting up this important opportunity for our athletes and families. If you missed our kick-off, you still may participate. Attached are the forms and flyers you need to get started. This year, you can sell both MinneSalsa salsa and Urban Ventures coffee in an effort to raise funds to cover some of the expenses that are not covered by our team fee and activity fee: supplemental training, camp, team apparel, the banquet. As we shared in the MAST Fact Sheet, we may also have to ask you to help cover the cost of a lift ticket this year at our AWAY races. Also attached is an edited version of the slide show we used last night. The slides should explain the fundraiser process fairly well. If you have questions, you can contact me, Mike or Hope. I encourage all MAST athletes to participate. All order forms with payment need to be submitted before or on Monday, November 15th—we will be collecting orders at the Season Pass Pick Up Event. Registration With MAST and Hyland Season Pass Orders As of this morning, we have 117 athletes registered with MAST, 33 of you are new to the team. Welcome All! Attached is a roster of registered athletes AND a roster of athletes who have purchased a season pass through MAST. If you have not registered for MAST, do so this week please. I will be closing registration on or before Saturday morning or when we hit 125 athletes, whichever comes first. We are quite full. And the deadline for purchasing a season pass through MAST is Wednesday, October 27. If you still need to purchase a pass, put a check in an envelope and drop it in my mailbox: 4800 Harriet Ave. Make checks payable to Mpls Alpine. Registration With MPS Online registration for Winter Sports is ready to go. Remember, most of you have paid the MPS Activity Fee. Don't pay a second time when you register with MPS. You should be able to submit your MPS registration without paying the activity fee, so if you run into any trouble, please call me. REGISTER WITH MPS HERE. Equipment and the Team Gilboa Ski Swap If you still need equipment, the last ski swap of the season will be held this Friday, Oct 29 through Sunday, Oct 31. I recommend arriving shopping on Friday if you have critical equipment needs. Here’s a link to the Swap: https://www.teamgilboa.com/swap TG Equipment Swap Hours Friday, 10/29: 4pm-8pm Saturday, 10/30: 10am-5pm Sunday, 10/31: 10am-12pm World Cup Results at Soelden and Some Minnesota Connections The USA had a great start on the World Cup circuit this weekend in Soelden. The season commenced with giant slalom races. Mikaela Shiffren finished first. She makes it look so easy because she has perfect fundamental technical skills developed by focusing on perfecting the drills that her coaches taught her to perform in her youth. Also impressive were the results of three other US women who finished in the top 30, one of whom—Paula Moltzen (placing 23rd)-- hails from Lakeville, MN. Paula won the MN State High School Alpine Championship back in 2009—as a ninth grader. In the men’s race, River Radamus had the best finish of his young career, sixth overall. River’s father, Aldo Radumus, is a Hall of Fame coach in Colorado who grew up in Robbinsdale and learned to ski at Theodore Wirth Park when he was a kid—back when Theodore Wirth operated a ski area complete with ski instruction. He started his USSA racing career as a senior in high school on the Equinox Ski Team that trained at Hyland. Equinox was a ski shop back in the 70’s located on 50th and France that sponsored the first USSA team at Hyland. I got my start on Equinox as well. As you can see, Minnesota is well connected to the international ski racing stage. As Paul Harvey use to say, “And now you know the rest of the story.” Scroll down to the bottom of our homepage to watch Mikaela’s winning runs. Exciting stuff. More to come.... Thank you also to Aaron Cherveny, Mark Harritt, and Matt McConville for all you did to make this fundraiser such a success. And to anyone else who helped organize the tournament, THANK YOU. Webinar #1 "Orientation To Ski Racing and MAST" Available To Download and View If you missed our presentation “Orientation to Ski Racing and the Mpls Alpine Ski Team”, you can now download and view it from the home page of our website. Each slide is narrated by yours truly. I tried to book James Earle Jones, but he was too busy plugging Arby’s. Sorry, you are stuck with me. Warning: You will have to advance each slide manually. Sorry to make you work. Originally it was advancing automatically, which I thought was really cool and high tech, but once I threw in a video it stopped doing that. That’s where I bumped into the limits of my technical skills. The good news is that it only runs 40 minutes or so. Much shorter than the live version, but still filled with all the information you need to understand what our sport is about and how things operate here at MAST. Here's a link to our homepage: www.mplsalpineski.org. MAST Website Speaking of the MAST Website, we are continuing to update pages every week.
