Here is a link: MASTApparel Sale. Registration Update Congratulations to all 125 of you who are officially registered for the Mpls Alpine Ski Team. IT IS NOW TIME TO SUBMIT THE MPS/MSHSL FORMS TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. If you are a 7th or 8th grader, you need to submit your forms to the athletic director of the high school to which you are assigned because of your address. I recommend dropping off the forms directly with the AD, but you can certainly put them in the mail. Be sure to place the name of the AD on the envelope along with your return address and mark the envelope ALPINE REGISTRATION. If you put SKIING on the envelope or on the form itself, the AD does not know whether the registration is for Alpine or Nordic. You can find the forms you need by clicking on the link below that is associated with your high school. You should also be able to pick up forms directly from your athletic director. https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/uploads/eligbrochure_2019_20_4.pdf PLEASE NOTE:
Note that the forms that you need to submit to your high school AD are listed:
You do not need to print or turn in all 19 pages. And ignore the Student Transfer form. This does not apply to you. Be sure to look over this form twice. There are hard to spot signature requirements for both parents and athletes throughout these forms. If you miss a signature requirement, the AD will not clear you for participation. If you played a FALL HIGH SCHOOL SPORT, you only need to turn in a new Emergency Referral Card. The Physical Examination Clearance Form is valid for three years. If you are a returning MAST athlete, PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR ATHLETIC DIRECTOR to see whether your Physical Exam Clearance Form is still valid for the Winter Season. FORMS ARE DUE ON OCTOBER 28TH. This is the date of the MPS Winter Sports Registration Day. I would encourage you to turn the forms in BEFORE the 28th rather than AT the Winter Sports Registration event for that evening at your high school. I went to the Fall Sports Registration and there were long lines, chaos and much gnashing of teeth. I recommend turning in the forms BEFORE the registration evening. MAST coaches will not be in attendance at any of the schools that evening. IMPACT Concussion Baseline Testing Attached is a list of athletes who took a CONCUSSION BASELINE TEST last season. If your name is NOT on this list, you need to take the CONCUSSION BASELINE TEST this Fall. Exceptions: if you played a Fall Sport this year and took the baseline test for that sport, then you should be current. Here are the dates, times and locations for taking the concussion baseline tests before the season starts. Wednesday, October 30 @ Southwest and Washburn Option I: 3:15PM Option 2: 4:30PM Room: TBA Tuesday, November 5 at Southwest Option I: 3:15PM Option 2: 4:30PM Room: TBA Read on to understand why we ask you to take a Concussion Baseline Test. Athletes in many sports are vulnerable to a blow to the head that may result in a concussion. Although you will be wearing a helmet whenever you are on the slopes with MAST, the risk of suffering a concussion during the season remains. When concussions do occur, athletes are required to take a break from the sport and return only after being cleared to participate again by professionally trained concussion expert. One tool available to medical care personnel is a computerized concussion test. For this test to be most helpful, athletes are asked to take the test when the brain is “healthy”, that is, when it hasn’t sustained a concussion. The test measures multiple cognitive functions and gives each athlete a score for each area measured. Should the athlete suffer a concussion, the physician or attending care giver may elect to have you re-take the concussion test (after all the concussion symptoms have disappeared) in order to compare pre and post-concussion cognitive functions. If the scores don’t align well, your physician or other qualified medical care professional may continue to restrict your activity until your scores improve. When a concussion is sustained, your brain must fully heal before you can return to play. If someone with a concussion sustains a second concussion before the first concussion has fully healed, the risk of long-term cognitive damage increases greatly. So, please set aside on of the two dates and times listed above to take your baseline test. If you can’t attend either of these testing dates, you will need to contact the athletic trainer at your high school to arrange to take the test at another time. Mark 612-275-8392 First, a big thank you to all the parents and athletes who worked the Pierce Oktoberfest Hot Dog Stand last weekend. I’m sorry you didn’t have better weather. Hopefully some of you got to meet Olympian Resi Steigler at some point over the weekend.
Thank you to all of you who attended the MAST Information Meeting on Tuesday. Hopefully you have a better understanding of our sport and our team. Don’t hesitate to call or write if you have any questions. And thank you to the board members and coaches who attended the Information Meeting. I greatly appreciated your presence. We are four weeks away from the opening of the high school alpine season. We have much work to do to be ready to begin on November 11. I. MAST Registration (Step 1 of the Registration Process) If you have not yet registered with MAST, please do so this week. Here is a link to the MAST Registration Page. Attached is a list of people who are registered for MAST this Winter. If any information is incorrect, please contact me. II. MPS/MSHSL Registration (Step 2 of the Registration Process) It is time to download, print and complete all the forms you need to submit to your high school athletic director. You can find the forms you need by clicking on the link below that is associated with your high school. Washburn: https://washburn.mpls.k12.mn.us/athletic_forms Southwest: https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/uploads/eligbrochure_7_16_2019_20.pdf Roosevelt: https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/uploads/eligbrochure_7_16_2019_20.pdf South: https://athletics.mpls.k12.mn.us/uploads/eligbrochure_2019_20_4.pdf PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT PAY the $75 Activity Fee. You already did this when you registered with MAST. In early November, MAST will send a check to MPS to cover the Activity Fee payments that we have collected. These payments will be used to partially cover payroll for the five coaches that the district does not cover for alpine in its athletic budget. If you are downloading the forms from the links with Southwest, Roosevelt, or South, you will see that the “Packet” is 19 pages long. This can make things very confusing for first time users. Here is the message posted on the top of the first page. To Register for MPS Athletics this entire packet must be completed. Sign and Return the following pages to your school · Page 4 Emergency Referral card · Pages 5-6 Media Release and Student Transfer Form (if necessary) · Pages 13-14 MSHSL Eligibility and Sports Health Questionnaire · Pages 15-19 Athletic Physical Examination Forms Note that the forms that you need to submit to your high school AD are listed above and contained in the 19 pages:
Submit these forms to your high school athletic director. I suggest putting them in a sealed manila envelope addressed to your athletic director with your return address posted. Hand the envelope to your AD directly or slip it under his/her office door if the office is closed. III. Hyland Season Pass Payments Attached is a list of athletes who have submitted payment for a Hyland Season Pass. If your name is not on this list and you would still like to purchase a season pass through MAST, please mail a check ASAP in the amount of $424 to: Minneapolis Alpine 4800 Harriet Ave South Minneapolis, MN 55419 IV. SPRONGO Sometime in the next few days, you will receive an invitation to join the Sprongo account of the Minneapolis Alpine Ski Team. Sprongo is the name of the video sharing service that we utilize. Our videos are viewable only to members of the MAST Sprongo account. When you receive the invitation to join Sprongo, please accept and create an account using the first and last name of the athlete. Do not use nicknames. You will need to write down your account log in name and password so that you can access your account once we start shooting video. Also, give the log in and password information to your parents so they can also watch your videos when they start to miss you at work. If you are a returning MAST athlete who has never set up a Sprongo account, look for an email inviting you to do so as well. The coaches will shoot thousands of video clips this Winter. MAST Equipment Swap and Tuning Clinic
All athletes need to learn how to sharpen and wax your own skis. Parents are encouraged to learn how to do this as well. We will be offering two clinics on Saturday to teach parents and athletes how to tune skis properly. If your skis are not tuned regularly, you will not progress in the sport. Your skis will become dull quickly and you will slip and slide your turns in the courses. Your skis will dry out and your skis will drag instead of glide over the snow. Learn to keep your edges sharp and your bases waxed so you can enjoy every moment of your racing experience and advance in the sport as quickly as possible. MAST Apparel and Swag Store Is OPEN! A big thank you to our captains and to Gail Arnold and Susan Peterson for putting together a wonderful collection of apparel and other useful MAST memorabilia. Many of the items they have designed celebrate our 20 years of existence as THE alpine ski team of Minneapolis Public Schools. All apparel can be purchased online. The apparel sale will close on October 18th, so please don’t procrastinate. Here is a link: MAST Apparel Sale. The captains will also be selling MAST ski straps, coffee mugs, stickers, and patches at MAST gatherings throughout the Fall. Bring a checkbook or cash to the Swap tomorrow or to the information meeting on October 8th --just in case you like what you see. I think you will. I’ve attached a photo of the stickers, patches and mugs we are selling offline. Registration Is OPEN! We have 87 athletes registered for MAST. Of these registrants, 25 are new to the team and 17 are in the 7th grade and 4 are in 8th. Welcome to all – both our veterans and our rookies. If you have not yet registered and know for certain that you will be racing with us this Winter, I encourage you to register in the next week or two. If you are still undecided, feel free to give me a call if I can answer any questions or twist your arm in any way. Here is a link to the MAST Registration Page.
