Hello MAST Athletes, Parents, Friends, and Coaches:
NOW is the time to sign up for the first of two “social” fundraisers we will be holding this year. Please feel free to extend this invitation to family and friends who might enjoy nine holes of golf on an autumn evening in Minnesota. Fifth Annual MAST(ers) Golf Tourney! When: Thursday, October 3rd. 4pm shotgun start Where: Hiawatha Golf Course Cost: $75/person The format will be a 9-hole, 4-person scramble, meaning that all players hit a shot, you choose which of the four balls is best, everyone picks up their balls and plays from the best spot and you continue until you get the ball in the hole. Your foursome will maintain a single score. This will be a fun, casual event with very little golf experience required! 5th Annual MASTers Golf Tournament Sign Up Link After the golf and fellowship on the course, we’ll head inside the clubhouse where you can grab snacks & beverages as we run the raffle drawing and silent auction. And to make the event come to life, we need donations for the raffle and auction items. If you have anything to offer up as a giveaway, enter it in the link below. These donations have played a key part in helping fund the supplies we need to keep MAST running! Ideas for donations: Gift cards at stores/restaurants, access to sporting events, wine, golf gear, tickets – nothing is too big or too small – we just appreciate your generosity! Make a RAFFLE Donation Here Why we Fundraise The 2024-25 MAST Team Fee of $300 has only slightly risen over the years. This is due to our successful fundraising in past years and the financial diligence of our MAST Board and Coaches. The $300 fee may still seem expensive (and it is a lot of money), but keep this in mind. Way back in 1975-76, Coach Mark paid over $300 to join his club ski team. They trained four days a week back then. MAST will be training five to six days a week. The fundraising we engage in during the Fall months helps us keep our team fees low, especially relative to 1975. Please help us keep our fees low and participate in our fun fundraising efforts! We can't wait to see you on the course! Many Thanks, MAST Board & Coaches MAST UPDATE #5 Sunday, September 22, 2024 Hello MAST Athletes, Parents, Friends, and Coaches: We hope the first few weeks of school are going well for everyone and trust that you’re enjoying this lovely extended summer weather! We have quite a bit of information in these pre-season emails so please take a thorough look and mark your calendars for upcoming dates. Also, please continue to get in touch with alternative email addresses to replace the student “mpsedu” addresses, since our google groups address book cannot add those. We want to make sure that your athlete is informed on all things MAST. Welcome to our new athletes/ families! We hope this information helps give you a smooth introduction into the thrilling yet somewhat complicated sport of ski racing. Please reach out if we can help! IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 at 7-8PM MAST Information Night for New Athletes and Families “Orientation to High School Ski Racing and MAST” NEW LOCATION! Our means of communicating with our athletes and families is through email. Our sport is more complicated than most, but also more rewarding once you settle in for the journey. You will find that most of your questions will be answered simply by taking the time to read these Updates carefully and following through on any action requested. Second, we are unable to add “mpsedu” email addresses to our google groups address book. MPS may be blocking outside organizations from directly adding people to our address book. Parents, please share these Updates with your athlete, and if you have an additional email address for your student, please let us know so we can add them to our distribution list. Third, if you feel you might be on this distribution list in error, please unsubscribe or let us know…though we’d hate to see you go! We have a lot coming up in October. Mark your calendars, sign up, participate, engage, learn, befriend, expand, and thrive. Let’s dive in! I. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 at 7-8PM MAST Information Night for New Athletes and Families “Orientation to High School Ski Racing and MAST” NEW LOCATION! Lynnhurst Recreation Center 1345 W Minnehaha Parkway Minneapolis, MN 55410 MPS Students in grades 7 through 12 and their parents/guardians are invited to attend a presentation on high school alpine ski racing and the Mpls Alpine Ski Team. The presentation will help students and parents discern whether our sport and our team is a good fit for you. (Hopefully, you will decide to give it a try!) Returning athletes and parents are invited as well, especially if you missed last year’s presentation and still have questions about our season and program. II. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1 MAST Registration Opens Online! How to register for MAST and Alpine Skiing: The Mpls Alpine Ski Team is a 501c3 non-profit organization that administers the alpine ski racing team of the Mpls Public Schools. To become a team member, you need to register twice: once with MAST the non-profit and again with MPS Athletics. Registration with MAST opens on October 1 and registration with MPS Athletics opens for winter sports on Thursday, October 14. At the point of registration, you will also be asked to pay two fees: $300 to Mpls Alpine and $75 to Mpls Public Schools. You will pay these fees during the registration processes of both organizations. Both registrations are online. We will send links and instructions in advance of the dates when each registration opens. MN high school alpine racers are required to have a Sports Qualifying Physical Examination completed and submitted along with registration. Many doctors already have this form, but you can bring it to make sure. They will fill it out as part of a standard physical. Drop this form off (the first page) at your designated area High School Athletic Department (even if you are a middle schooler). This needs to be done every three years. When you register with MAST on or after October 1, you guarantee your place on the team. Registration for Alpine Skiing with MPS opens on October 14. If you have not registered with MAST by this date, there may not be any open positions remaining on the roster. There have been years when our roster has filled by the time registration opens with MPS Athletics. We don’t have tryouts and we don’t cut athletes. Nonetheless, because training space at Hyland is limited, we have to put a limit on our team size, which is roughly 120 skiers. III. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3 5th Annual MASTers GOLF TOURNAMENT Hiawatha Golf Course 4PM Shotgun Start We’re excited to announce the 5rd Annual MASTers Golf Tournament! This adults-only fundraiser is a casual round of scramble golf for fun... and all are welcome! But the kids get to sit this one out. Your foursome will maintain a single score. This will be a fun, casual event with very little golf experience required and will have some on-course competitions where you might win a prize! In fact, the only real golf experience you need is the ability to fork over some cash. Sign up as foursome, or one, either way we’ll take care of you. All are welcome – no need to be part of the MAST family to be included! To book your tee time, sign up HERE: MASTers Golf Tournament Sign UP. Again, you can make an appointment on October 9th when a MAST coach will be on hand to help, or any other day of the week starting now. Boot and ski models and sizes do sell out, so if you know that you will be buying new equipment this year, we suggest making the appointment for either October 9th or earlier. V. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT AND EQUIPMENT SALES AND SWAPS
As you know, ski racing is an equipment intensive sport, which makes it an expensive sport. If you are just getting into ski racing, the costs can be overwhelming. To help you manage these expenses, we encourage new families to buy as much used equipment as you can (with the exception of a race helmet—buy that new and don’t skimp on the price). Ski swaps are good places to buy used boots and skis, race suits, jackets, poles, and protective equipment. We advise you to do your homework ahead of time so you know what you are looking for. One other piece of advice: be there when the doors open, especially if you are looking for slalom race skis. Those go quickly. Before you go to a swap, make sure you know the following information about equipment. Slalom race skis: distinguishing between a recreational ski and slalom race ski, jr race vs tweaner vs adult FIS, proper length, differentiating between “used but serviceable” vs “worn out”. Race boots: distinguishing race boots from recreational, ascertaining proper fit and flex number, identifying used but serviceable. Race poles: vs recreational poles, compatible with pole guards, proper sizing. To help you become educated, follow this link to the MAST Guide to Buying New and Used Equipment. Read this before you go to a swap so you know what you are looking for and how to discern race from recreational and quality from worn out. VI. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14TH Winter Sports Registration Opens with Minneapolis Public Schools VII. HYLAND SEASON PASSES - NOW ON SALE! If you aren’t one of the 14 skiers who paid for Season Passes last Spring already, save the sales tax on your Hyland Season Pass by sending a check for $499 made out to “Mpls Alpine” to Hope White to arrive before Oct 28, 2024 at the address below. Season passes will be available for pickup at Hyland Hills Nov 11 at the Season Pass Pick up night. Hope White 4945 Clinton Ave Minneapolis 55419 Alternatively, passes are on sale on-line with Hyland for $499+tax until Nov 1, then increase to $524+tax. VIII. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH 6pm-7:30pm First Official Day of the Season Hyland Season Pass Photo Night, Pass Pick Up, and Team Meeting at Hyland Park Ski Chalet IX. Tuesday, December 31, 2024 - Friday, Jan 3, 2025 Giants Ridge Camp! - SAVE THE DATE Remember to put your MAST signs out now. It’s a great way to show your support and let others who drive, walk or ride by your house know about our program! That’s all for now, but we’ll leave you with some past inspiration from our beloved Coach Mark Conway. “If you are not in a Fall sport, I hope you are doing something daily to improve your strength, endurance, balance, speed and agility. - - Be well. Make good decisions. Study hard. Be kind to your siblings and parents. They love you.” HAVE A GREAT WEEK! Ski Swaps available for purchasing used ski equipment:
2024 Team Gilboa Ski Swap at Hyland ***These are not MAST events, but it is an opportunity to buy USED equipment, clothing and gear. ONE CAUTION: Be very clear you are shopping for a MAST alpine racer shopping for Slalom race gear. Ask for a salesperson who is knowledgeable in ski race gear. Being specific will help prevent you from purchasing the wrong equipment. Don’t hesitate to contact your high school coach for guidance before going to the sale. See below for more buying information. Also, be aware that the race stuff goes fastest so you are far more likely to find things if you go on the early end. ***Read before you go! MAST Buying Guide For Ski Equipment has a lot of detailed information about the equipment you need. The MAST Guide will help you understand how to size and select quality used (and new) equipment. Please note: You need SLALOM race skis and RACE boots. You do NOT want to use RECREATIONAL skis or boots. Why? Because they will not perform well in a slalom race course. The skis will be slow to turn. The boots won’t flex and help you create the kind of angles you need to progress as a racer. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14TH Winter Sports Registration Opens with Minneapolis Public Schools (Both MAST and MPS registration is required, details to follow) MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH Alpine Ski Season Officially Opens!
