MAST UPDATE Week 12
Sunday, January 25, 2026 Hello MAST Family, This past weekend our community showed what Minnesota pride truly looks like - neighbors turning out in extraordinary numbers to stand together in support of each other, even in the coldest of conditions and in the midst of grief. The strength, care, and compassion so many have shown around us have been powerful reminders of the kind of community we are. We persevere. On the hill, our ski racers have embodied that same spirit every day. You’ve shown incredible sportsmanship, camaraderie, and dedication - cheering each other on, pushing through tough drills, and turning hard work into fast, clean runs. It’s been a joy to watch you grow as athletes and teammates. We’ve had a terrific season so far, and as we head into this final week before Sections - and especially as our Seniors take the start with the whole team for the last time - let’s keep showing up for one another. Staying focused, supporting each other and finishing strong together will carry us forward. A REQUEST FROM YOUR TEAM CAPTAINS Our wonderful Team Captains have a big banquet planning request! We want to see your most epic falls! Please complete this google form OR text Eva with your video and name. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd8RB09ooAB8h1je07-LOaIVIWvg6tTKP2KdCNc8SnsBdDIJg/viewform?usp=header It sounds like only 2 videos have been received thus far so get those epic falls Parents! If you have some great race pics, Captain Eva would like you to send them her way. Please text them to her at: 612-807-7649 WAY TO REPRESENT! They wouldn’t tell you themselves, but 8 of our MAST racers competed on crazy hard courses at the highly competitive USSA Dan Nagy Memorial at Mt. La Crosse this weekend. AND, they finished near the top! In a sea of DNFs and DSQs, Eva Voyakin, Sophia Larson, Steffan Drekonja, Sam Moore, Wyatt Shelton, Will Moertel, Beckett Peterson, and Rowan Krueger hung on and had fast, clean runs. In fact, Steffan got 5th place, Sam scored 9th, and Eva earned the top spot! That’s right…#1! Bravo!!! Give your teammates a pat on the back. Sunday, January 18, 2026 Hello MAST Family, MAST had a Giant weekend (yes, we love a good ski pun), and now we’re charging full speed into the final stretch of the season with two action-packed weeks of racing ahead! The temps are frigid, the snow is race-ready, and Minnesota is serving full Winter Wonderland vibes. With that said, keep a close eye on TeamSnap in the morning. There’s a slight chance that the weather could cause Wild to cancel tomorrow’s race. We will alert you with last-minute changes as soon as we hear. A quick but important reminder as we head into our race tomorrow: during our last Supplemental training, a few car windows were broken in the Washburn parking lot. Unfortunately, this can happen anywhere—even driveways and street parking—so please don’t leave valuables in your cars, especially anything visible. And finally, it’s that time of year when colds and flu are trying to keep up with us. Let’s stay one step ahead by getting plenty of rest, eating well, taking vitamins, and washing hands often. Strong, healthy racers finish strong. Let’s do this, MAST! Coaches’ Commentary from the Giant’s Ridge MLK Invite! What a successful race day! Thank you to all of the athletes, families and friends that made the long trip up to Giants Ridge to pack in back to back races. It was a cold one and we appreciate everyone sticking it out and delivering great results. Our athletes and supporters were cheering so loud yesterday that us coaches could hear you in the middle of the hill. Amazing job showing the rest of the hill what MAST is all about! Yesterday’s implementation of tactics was truly incredible to watch. We all know Helsinki is no easy hill and you managed to attack the pitch, stay stacked in the compression, and rip it on the flats. Even Benji (Rock Ridge head coach) put smiley faces next to three of our athletes' names because he said they were the best pole plants they’d seen in years! Well done!! In the morning’s Sunrise Race, we had some fast finishes with Eva Voyakin in 3rd, Steffan Drakonja in 9th, and Wyatt Shelton in 11th. Not only did we have great results for many individuals we also had outstanding team results with Southwest girls and Washburn boys both finishing in 2nd! The success of the day did not stop there! In the afternoon, we had some speedy finishes by Eva Voyakin who placed in 4th and Harlowe Petersen who placed in 10th. Not far behind we had Sofia Larson in 12th, Sloane Petersen in 13th and Avery Patterson in 14th. All these great finishes led the Southwest girls to their FIRST place team finish! On the boys side we had some phenomenal finishes with Steffan Drekonja in 5th, Wyatt Shelton in 9th, and Will Mortel in 11th! This led the Washburn boys to earn a FIRST place team finish! Wow two teams with first place finishes! The hard work you have put into this season is paying off! Congratulations to all athletes! We can speak for all the coaches when we say we had a lot of pride in both your skiing and sportsmanship this weekend. Looking forward to getting back to Wild tomorrow! Sunday, January 11, 2026 Hello MAST Family, This past week has been a heavy one for Minneapolis. Many of us are carrying a mix of sadness, anger, confusion, and exhaustion, and it’s okay to name that. In moments like this, races, practices, results - almost everything - can feel small compared to what our community and neighbors are experiencing. What does matter is people. Please check in on one another: teammates, friends, classmates, coaches. A simple “how are you doing?” can mean more than we realize. No one needs to carry this alone. And at the same time, there is something grounding about continuing to show up. We keep moving, keep training, keep supporting each other - not because what we do is more important than what is happening around us, but because being together, working hard, and caring for one another is part of how we get through difficult weeks. This is what Minnesotans do. We look out for each other. We put in the work. We show up, even when it’s hard. Thank you for being part of this team and this community. Immediate Action Items:

Deadlines for race intentions are listed in the intentions sheet for each race. When you click on the Race Intentions 2025-26 spreadsheet link, look for the tabs at the bottom of the page for each specific race: December 19, etc. Click on a tab and find your team (scroll down) and then find your name. If you want to race, type a Y in the Yes box next to your name. If you do not want to race, type a N in the No box next to your name. It is expected that each racer states their intention for every race. Even if you think you may not qualify for a specific varsity race, it’s still important to fill in the boxes. Stating YES does not guarantee you will race but it tells the coaches you are available and interested when they make the lineup. If racers forget to state race intentions and show up to race, they will be seeded at the end of the race. For non-Hyland races, if a racer does not state their race intention by the due date, they will not be considered for that race. Keep in mind many of the daytime invitationals are all day, which means being released from school. Almost all afternoon/evening races are early release days. We are expected to clean the hill at 10, and if we’re efficient as a team you are likely off the hill or outside getting into cars by 10:15/10:20. Please note there is NO freeskiing anywhere else at Hyland before they open to the public at 9am. They open the NORTH CHAIR ONLY at 8am to allow us to train, and we are to go from the chalet to the bottom of North and from the bottom of North to the chalet. We are not allowed to cut through the terrain park to go back to the chalet. Please respect these guidelines so we can continue to get great training done on Saturdays before the masses arrive. MLK INVITATIONAL - GIANT’S RIDGE The January 17 MLK Invitational at Giant’s Ridge is a one-day, all-day event consisting of two races - a sunrise race in the morning and a sunset race in the afternoon. We will be inviting the top 6-7 athletes for 3 girls and 3 boys teams (SW, Washburn, MAST). Please note: MAST does not provide transportation, lodging or meals for this invitational. Parents/caregivers are responsible for transportation, lodging and meals for their athletes. Due to distance and expense, alternates’ attendance will be optional unless they are asked, in advance, to race in place of a seeded athlete. Please take all of these things into consideration when you state your intentions for this invitational. Please do so by January 6. Race Intentions 2025-26 Team selections will be made soon so families can plan accordingly. If you think your athlete might be selected to attend, it is suggested to secure accommodations in or near Biwabik or Virginia, MN that can be cancelled. *FYI, athletes are never allowed to transport himself/herself to an away high school race. MAST PHOTO GALLERY: A special holiday gift Have you met Janna Fraboni, our very talented Team Photographer and Mom of Washburn captain, Stella? Janna braves the cold and hikes the hill at every race, camera at the ready…to capture our athletes in their element. She just posted some fantastic photos from the Wild Invitational on our website (as well as scenes from the State Fair Barn cleanup). You can drag your photos into your own photo gallery or desktop, for keeps! How sweet is that?! Check them out - and stay tuned for even more from Janna as the season unfolds! 2025-26 MAST Photo Gallery ON-HILL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED & APPRECIATED at Hyland & Supplemental Practices This is a pretty cool experience for both parents and their athletes. Plus, being a parent volunteer during practice and supplementals gives our coaches more time to coach our racers. The only requirements are that you know how to ski (racing experience not needed) and you must complete the MSP Parent Background Check. You get to hold a radio, drill holes, replace gates, slip, and be up close, watching our mighty racers and coaches. Coaches will give you instruction as to what you can do to help. You can come out one night a week, 2 nights a week, stay for 1 session, stay for all sessions. Recruit a fellow MAST parent to join you and make an evening of it! Please reach out to a coach with questions. Their contact info is at the bottom of this email. “I had a free afternoon and evening so went to help out at practice. Little did I know how appreciated I'd feel with just showing up and offering help wherever it was needed. There were three of us helping coaches Thursday night: Jeff, Erik and myself. I did videoing of runs, Jeff managed athletes at top and helped with course repair, and Erik helped with sage coaching advice at the base. Our help allowed the coaches to focus on the athletes. I'd highly recommend putting a handful of afternoon/evenings on your calendar to show up at practice to help with videoing, course management, organizing athletes at top, and giving high fives. It was super easy and very fun. No previous experience needed!!!!” -MAST President, Heather Hunt To help out, complete the Volunteer Background Check. Coaches will have a lift ticket for you at the base or in the team locker (they will give you the code). RACE CHANGES! Check Team Snap & UPDATE YOUR CALENDAR Many changes have been made to our race schedule. Our final race schedule is below! Please continue to check TeamSnap for details and any other schedule changes that may occur throughout the season. As a race approaches, we’ll be sure to provide race day details, early release information, and racers chosen (for Invitationals/ Varsity races, etc). *Please note that the January 9 Hyland race has been canceled. In lieu of the race, we will have practice. **We are honoring our amazing Seniors at the Jan 27 MEC #4 at Welch and Jan 30 Hyland #3 races. Stay tuned! REMEMBER to state your RACE INTENTIONS Race intentions for the January 17 GIANT’S RIDGE MLK Invitational are due January 6! Race Intentions are open for the rest of the season! Go to each tab and state your intentions now!
