Last minute appeal for race workers... today and beyond.

1/23/2025

Good Morning MAST Families:
First, thank you to all of you who have signed up to send food and beverages, set up tents, fill race worker positions and all the other tasks required to support three platoons of ski racers over the next week.
Second, we are learning that we have several athletes who are home sick today and will not be racing. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Rest and heal.
Third, we have a busy race schedule ahead and still have race volunteer positions to fill. Keep reading for a run-down of open positions and links to sign up.
1. For today at Afton:
Due to athlete illness, one gate judging position has opened up. Would someone be willing to take this position so that the parent whose athlete is sick can stay home and give comfort as needed? Text or call Mark Conway at 612-275-8392 if you can serve as a replacement gate judge.
And we still need one scoreboard recorder for today’s race as well. Just send Mark a text if you can help.   612-275-8392.
2.  For Monday, January 27 at Wild Mt
We have quite a few positions yet to fill.

  • 2 First Run Gate Judge Positions
  • 1 Second Run Gate Judge Position
  • 1 Starter (no previous experience needed; just the ability to read three digit numbers and speak clearly when asked to speak)
  • 1 Girls Finish Ref
  • 2 Scoreboard Recorders
Please Sign Up to Work the Race on Monday Here:
Race Worker Sign Up.  Pioneer Invitational.   Monday, January 27, 2025.
3.  For Tuesday, January 28 at Welch Village
This is a big race to fill because we are running JV on two courses and Varsity on two other courses. That means twice the number off race workers as needed. That also means the race will go more quickly.
Still needed:
  • 2 Assistant Starters
  • 5 Gate Judges (2 Varsity; 3 JV)
  • 2 Scoreboard Recorders

Please Sign Up To Work The Race on Tuesday Here:
Race Worker Sign Up.   MEC Race #2 and MEC JV Championships.  Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
4.  For Thursday, January 30 at Welch Village
Still needed:
  • 2 Gate Judges
  • 2 Bib Collectors
Please Sign Up to Work the Race on Thursday Here:
Race Worker Sign Up.  MEC Race #3.  Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Thank you,
Mark

Rescheduled MEC Race; Drills for Skills Videos; and Invitation to Watch Sprongo Video with Coach Mark

1/21/2025

Good Morning MAST Athletes:

Announcement #1: Yesterday's cancelled MEC race at Wild Mt has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 30th at Welch Village. Washburn students will be released at 2PM and load the bus by 2:15. Students from all other schools will be released at 1:45PM and load the bus by 2PM. This makes for a very busy week ahead with races on Thursday of this week and races on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of next week. Plus a Supplemental Training on Saturday evening. The race at Welch on Jan 30th will now serve as our third MEC race. Conference awards will be given out following the race. Since this is a new race on the calendar, you need to STATE YOUR RACE INTENTIONS HERE. BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE TAB MARKED JAN 30 '25.   Athletes, school comes first. If you feel you need to stay in school on Thursday and focus on homework, that is fine. Just decline the invitation to race.
Parents: We have a lot of need for race workers over the next week with four races on the schedule. As soon as we know our assigned race worker positions for Jan 30th, we will send a link to volunteer.  Hopefully it will be 28 degrees and clear skies.

Announcement #2: Week 11 Drills for Skills
All of us coaches are disappointed that we are not allowed to hold practice today.
The good news is that you have time to rest your bodies, study and maybe get ahead in your school work in anticipation of a heavy racing schedule next week, and tune your skis.

For those who want to ski today, you are free to go to Hyland on your own. Attached is a list of drills with links to demonstration video and verbal instructions. MAST was assigned lanes 3 and 4 for both practices today, so if you go to Hyland during normal training times, you are welcome to use these lanes. A reminder to ski safely. Ski single file so you don't crash into each other.

Announcement #3: Video Analysis with Coaches
I know some coaches are holding Sprongo video analysis sessions for their teams today and invitations were sent out via team snap by your head coach. If your coach is unable to offer video analysis today, I am available from 1-2PM today for anyone who would like to watch video via google meets. All you have to do is send me a text. The first 12 athletes to send me a text will be given a timeframe between 1 and 2PM to join the meeting and analyze video. Text me at 612-275-8392. Be sure to give me your name. I will text back a time to log in. HERE IS A LINK TO LOG IN: https://meet.google.com/ipi-nsoq-mxv

Busy couple of weeks ahead.  Get your rest.  Keep your edges sharp.  Eat healthy.   Study.

MAST Update Week 10 & Giant's Ridge Recap - Sunday January 19, 2025

1/19/2025

Jack Zahr Memorial Race Results
Sunday, January 19, 2025

Hey there, MAST Family!

We hope everyone who attended the race yesterday at Giant’s Ridge is thawing out and slowly getting feeling back into your appendages! It sounds like it was a frigid day, but we’re glad the sun was shining on all those frosty eyelashes. See below for the coach’s recap of the race, along with important information for our upcoming week.

Giant’s Ridge - Coach Recap & Results

THANK YOU to all of our MAST parents, who made this race as comfortable as possible for the athletes and coaches on a very cold day at Giants Ridge. We were well fed and as warm as we could be on a cold long day. I want to also thank the MAST parents that volunteered to boot up and help work the race. I’m convinced your work helped us get out of there by 6:00. I am always impressed by the MAST community. On a cold day it is clear that our kids are different. Most kids finish their run and disappear until the next inspection. Our kids continued to loop back up, cheer on their teammates, and carry coats even as the day went on.

Ski racing is a sport of ups and downs and I know some of you didn’t get the results you were hoping for. Falling is part of the sport and after I find out the kid is okay I am usually excited, because that's a kid who is pushing their limits. Aside from a couple of crashes and poorly timed equipment issues we had some very good team and individual performances. Congratulations to the Southwest girls on their 1st place finish in the Sunset race and 3rd place in the Sunrise race. Also, big congrats to the MAST girls for their 3rd place finish. In a field of 19 teams finishing 1st and 3rd is a pretty good day!

The depth of our entire team was evident on the hill and in the results. Aside from a few teams, once the race got past the 3rd seed you could tell who a MAST racer was. Looking at the results, if a MAST racer skied clean they jumped an astonishing amount of spots when comparing the start order to the finish results. For example, Maddie Graff started 116th and finished 29th.

In the Sunrise Race we had 2 MAST boys in the top 15. Wyatt finished in 14th and Sam finished 12th. We also had 2 MAST (SW)  girls in the top 15. Lucy finished 6th and Eva finished 4th. In the Sunset Race we again had 2 MAST boys in the top 15. Steffan finished in 15th and Sam finished 7th. In the Sunset race MAST girls took 8 of the top 20 spots! Reese 20th, Maddie 19th, Amelia 18th, Avery 16th, Phoenix 13th, Ella 11th, Eva 6th and Lucy 4th.

Rest up and keep working hard the next few weeks!

-Coach Daniel

LAST CALL for AFTON WAIVERS & RACE INTENTIONS We really mean it this time!

RACE INTENTIONS: For the Afton Race, 22 athletes have not stated race intentions. Coaches make selections for away races based on these intentions. Please know that you will not be considered for this race, nor can you get on the bus if you didn’t state YES/ Y in your race intentions. Don’t let a simple ‘Y’ or ‘N’ on a spreadsheet hold you back from racing!

RACE INTENTION LINK

WAIVERS: If you know you will not be attending the race at Afton on Jan 23, no need to sign the waiver. However, if you want to race and are selected to go, you will not be allowed to race without this waiver signed. Please sign it and drop in Bill Bray’s mailbox ASAP:

MONDAY'S RACE CANCELED - please read

1/18/2025

Hello MAST Family,

We have an important bit of news for you.
Monday’s Jack Zahr Memorial RACE at Wild Mountain has been CANCELED due to extreme weather. Apparently, we Minnesotans have gotten soft. In all seriousness, though, high winds are predicted with a wind chill of 42 below. That’s no joke - and we want everyone safe, keeping all your fingers and toes...and noses.

We’ll know more on Tuesday regarding the potential of getting the race rescheduled. Currently, the hope is for the show to go on January 28, 29, or 30 at either Buck Hill, Welch, or Afton. We will keep you posted as we hear more!

But hey!
While you’re hunkering down inside, check out your SPRONGO videos!  The coaches have added more film AND rumor has it that Coach Mark even uploaded the Talent Show from Giant’s Ridge camp.

**Here’s a tip: IF you can’t log into your Sprongo account for some reason, please do not open a new one. You won’t have access to your videos if you do. Instead, reach out to one of your coaches so they can help you.

Stay warm and enjoy the rest of your weekend, team!

Hyland Race Results vs. Hopkins, Lake Crystal and Wayzata

1/15/2025

Good Evening MAST Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends:
Hard to believe that tonight was our last race at Hyland for the ‘24 - ‘25 season! Before getting started, we want to extend a huge thanks to Coryn Peterson for creating that last race party vibe with her unparalleled DJ skills. (Also noted, for being mere spectators you all have some very good, if questionable, dance moves!)  Anyway, when thinking about Hyland Hills several words come to mind - compact, modest, small-scale, maybe even cozy.  Also, swift, expeditious, speedy, and sprightly - especially when our MAST athletes take the slopes!  See below for the coach’s recap of just how speedy our athletes went tonight (full results are attached) along with important information regarding Saturday at Giants, Monday at Wild, and the not-to-be-missed very, very special opportunity for parents coming 1/31/25!!!!

Hyland Race vs. Hopkins, Lake Crystal and Wayzata - Coach Recap & Results
I want to start off this message congratulating our seniors on completing their final Hyland race! We had some great results tonight with Washburn boys and Southwest girls coming out on top in the team results. We had some very speedy runs from Amelia Mortell, Reese Brothers, Eric Hemer, and Sully Hunt. The courses tonight really tested our inspection skills and reminded us what good and thorough inspections can do for our race runs.
Big thank you to Captain Beckett K and Sammy H for always supporting their teammates while injured. Beckett gave us all a good reminder in the post race chat on how to finish the course strong. Looking forward to getting both of you back on the hill soon.
And THANK YOU to our parents, alumni and coaches who worked not only tonight’s race, but all of the races we hosted this season.  And, thank you as always, parents, family and friends, for supporting our athletes.
With all the races we have in the next few weeks please remember to tune your skis, sleep, and get your homework done! Great job tonight everyone!
  • Paige

1/14/2025

Good Evening MAST Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends:
Not sure how many of you know this, but the great poet of our time, Warren G., actually wrote the original version of “Regulators” about an alpine ski team.  If you haven’t heard it before it goes like this:

Alpine Skiers, boot up!!

It was a clear black night, a clear white moon, MAST skiers on the slope, trying to consume some gates for the eve, so they get some wins. Then rollin’ in the bus home, chillin’ as a team…

How fitting, right?  It was indeed a clear black night and a clear white moon, a bit cold, but many parents commented, “it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be.”  We really have become a hearty bunch, haven’t we?  Speaking of hearty, MAST racers faced the cold and zipped down both courses like it was well above 3 degrees.  See below for the coaches' race commentary and additional information (full results for varsity and JV, team and individual attached.)
MEC Race #1 - Coach Recap & Results
THANK YOU to all of our parents, alumni and coaches who worked this cold race!  And, thank you, alumni, families and friends, for supporting our athletes.

Fans attending our first Metro East Conference race at Wild Mt yesterday saw another very strong performance by our athletes. The Washburn Boys and the Southwest Girls both took second place to a very strong Hill-Murray squad.  Lia Rulf has worked hard to get her shins on the gate more consistently and square up her shoulders and it paid off with a third-place finish behind perhaps the two top contenders for the state championship title this year.  Lucy Renz, Eva Voyakin and Harlowe Petersen scored valuable team points, finishing  6th
, 7th, and 8th.  Ella O’Connor and Violet Mueller provided a strong one-two punch for the MAST girls with their 10th and 11th place results.   Maddie Graff, Amelia Moertel, and Elsa Addy were the top three scorers for Washburn, place 14th, 15th and 16th. For the boys, Sam Moore and Wyatt Shelton were our top two finishers, placing 7th and 8th respectively.  Placing 11th was Steffan Drekonja who was followed by a flood of Washburn boys who took five of the next six places.   Sullivan Hunt broke up the Washburn domination with his impressive finish in 18th place. The sportsmanship award goes to Massi Bray who, upon the conclusion of the second run, informed me that Sully had beaten him AND THAT HE WAS VERY HAPPY FOR HIS FRIEND.   That is the right attitude to take.  Each one of you pushes your teammates to improve.

Athletes, you continue to show improvement on both the technical and tactical sides of our sport.   Tactically, most of you were able to keep your turn shape above the gate, completing your direction change as you cleared the gate.  Technically, I saw a lot less sliding and much more carving, especially from our less experienced skiers.

A couple of issues we need to continue to work hard to improve:
Keep the chest/hips up so you have a more athletic stance.  Some of you are breaking at the waist causing your chest to face the snow instead of “down the fall line”.

Driving the inside shoulder forward as your turn shape progresses through the fall line.  This will help you keep your chest more “square” to the fall line and maintain consistent pressure on the outside ski.

Drive the inside knee to create equal edge angles and to assist you in clearing the gate simultaneously with your hand and shin. This will allow you to get more of your upper torso inside the gate.

Move the hips “down the fall line” in the transition phase of the turn BY EXECUTING A POLE PLANT.

Finally, many of you have the skills now to ski more aggressively.  What does this mean?  It doesn’t mean using your arms and upper body more.  It doesn’t mean going straight at the gate and losing turn shape.  It means that you MOVE your hips down the fall line as soon as you complete your turn, which should be when you finish clearing the gate.   This is where a pole plant is helpful... even if it is just a pole tap.  Skiing more aggressively is about having an intense desire to complete the turn and move to the new ski. Work the lower legs to create a new high edge angle quickly.  For some of you, it might mean that you can target the rise line lower than you have previously because you are now able to make a tighter radius turn in a shorter distance and still finish the direction change as you clear the gate.

We have a cold week ahead, but we will keep training.  Add some layers to your clothes. Wear a face mask.  Go in for short warm-ups before your feet freeze (and unbuckle your boots).  If we are on the rope tow lanes, bring your rope tow gloves and use the rope tow.  That will keep you much warmer.   Most of all, keep working hard.

Your Loving Coaches

ATTN: GIANT’S RIDGE MLK INVITE PARENTS

In an effort to keep the MLK race on schedule in frigid temps, organizers want to make sure there are plenty of course maintenance workers.  We are responsible for providing 2-3 course workers and 2-3 backup gate judges, in the event of judge no-shows.  Race organizers would like to have these names sooner than later.  Please consider.  Additionally, there are still some open spots for team provisions.  Sign up here: Giants Ridge Varsity MLK Invite 1/18/25

MAST Update Week 9, Sunday January 12, 2025

1/12/2025

Hello again, MAST Family,

The slopes just got a fresh coat of snow, and we're ready to carve it up! The forecast isn't the only thing looking promising – our team is gearing up for a big week of racing. With fresh powder beneath our skis and adrenaline in the air, it’s time to put our training to the test and show the competition what we’re made of. Big THANKS & kudos go to our witty wordsmith, Sara Turpin, for sending out those eagerly anticipated race results! Let’s really give her something to talk about this week.

Coaches Corner

Up until this past week we have had the opportunity to focus on training and improving ski racing skills without a rigorous race schedule. You have all done a tremendous job training and doing drills that no other team does. The coaches are starting to see the impact those little drills have in your racing. As we enter the most rigorous race schedule MAST has had in a few seasons, remember the drills that help you the most and try to perform them to perfection when warming up for races. Over the next few weeks your time management will become very important. Completing school work, attending practice, tuning skis, spending time with family, and finding time to sleep so you can perform your best can become exhausting. Be productive with the time you’re awake and sleep hard. It was evident this past week at races that some of you did not tune your skis. It is always sad to see racers who should be successful struggle at a race because skis are not sharp. If you are crunched for time, you can get away with not waxing but make sure your skis are sharp. The most important thing in time management is knowing how much time you have. Look back on your goals, look at how much time is left to try and achieve those goals, and know what you need to do to put yourself in the best position to achieve them. If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, ask a coach for help. Keep skiing hard the next 4 weeks!

THIS WEEK’S TRAINING/ RACE SCHEDULE

~Monday, Jan 13 MEC Race #1 at Wild Mountain~  We have entered 6 Varsity Teams with 10 athletes each. Please see the link for team selections and run orders, but don’t forget to read the remainder of this update!   WILD 1/13 MEC TEAMS

1:30 - Southwest
1:45 - Washburn
3:15 Arrive at Wild... Ticket. Bib. Boot up.
3:30 Warm Up

Washburn athletes can keep their equipment in the storage closet by the main gym. They will need to find Mr. Jenkins to open it for them in the morning.

Southwest athletes can keep their equipment in Mr. Mountain's outer office. Either Mr. Mountain or any other staff member can open it for them in the morning.

Athletes from all other schools are released at 1:15 and are expected to get themselves to either the Southwest or Washburn buses.

*Please make sure to give yourself enough time to get your equipment to school before classes begin and to get on that bus before it departs.  The 15 minutes between release and bus departure should give you enough time to change, get your equipment, and get on the bus. If you miss the bus, you will need to get a ride from a parent.

**Tomorrow will be a cold one, crew, so dress appropriately! The forecast is a high of 6 degrees and a low of -10.
