Good Afternoon MAST Families: As promised, some commentary regarding the race last night at Welch Village. First, another big thank you to all of the parents who worked the race and to those of you who cheered on our athletes. And thank you to the coaches who have make our athletes so competitive not only this year, but year after year. You are the best in the business. Let’s start with the boys. Washburn finished first in our third MEC race, placing 5 racers in the top 10 and 7 in the top 15 Sam Moore stepped to a new level of the MEC podium, securing a well-deserved 3rd place medal. Wyatt Shelton, Steffan Drekonja, Henry Payne, and Xavier Turpin finished 6th through 10th. Xavier and Sammy Hokenson (skiing for MAST,11th) have been riding the high-speed train of improvement, steadily placing higher on the results page with each race over the last couple of weeks. Also scoring for the Washburn boys were Eric Hemer (13th) , Will Moertel (14th)and Jens Hasler (23rd). The SW boys continue to improve as well. Sully Hunt (15th) just keeps getting faster and faster now that he has figured out his tactics. His skiing is almost as smooth as the sound he produces on his saxophone. And although Beckett (21st) and Rowan Krueger (25th) will tell you that they didn’t ski their best last night, there is a lot to celebrate in their skiing. From my position on the hill, they executed many turns that were simply brilliant. Once they eliminate a couple of rough turns, they will find themselves in the top 15 easily. The SW girls finished second last night to perhaps the best high school team in the State of Minnesota. Hold your heads high girls. And the Washburn girls placed third, demonstrating that they have been on a steep improvement trajectory. For SW, Lia Rulf, Lucy Renz, and Eva Voyakin finished in 5th through 7th. Amelia Moertel was the top finisher for Washburn, placing 9th. Amelia has been pushing the “fearless” button in practices and races of late and continues to move closer to the top of the podium. Keep it up Amelia. Ella O’Connor, skiing for MAST, placed 10th, followed by Phoenix Ehlers (Washburn,11th), Violet Mueller (MAST, 12th), and Reese Brothers (SW, 13th). All five of these girls have been working hard to drive their inside shin on the gate better and get some snap out of the turn. That hard work is paying off. Well done girls. Also breaking into the top 25 were Josie Bitney (16th), Harlowe Petersen (17th), Mila Voyakin (19th), Stella Wedren (21st), Sophia Larson (22nd), and Elsa Addy (23rd). In the end, neither the Washburn boys nor Southwest girls were able to hold off Hill-Murray to retain their Metro East Conference Championship titles from 2024. Do not be disappointed, however. The Southwest and Washburn Girls finished second and third and the MAST girls just kept getting better all season to finish fifth. The Washburn boys also finished second. They sure put up a fight, losing by only nine points. The coaches are extremely proud of how dedicated you all have been this season. You put in so much hard work and the results show. Congratulations. Everyone, keep working hard for the remainder of the season. For those who completed their racing with last night’s race, keep coming to practice. Push yourself in preparation for next season and in support of your teammates who will be representing you next week at the Section Championships. Attached are the point totals and standings for the 2025 MEC season. See you on the hill this afternoon. Mark ![]()
Good Morning: Race results just came through. Congratulations to the Washburn boys on your victory last night. Very good team skiing. More congratulations to come. Just want to get these out for now. See you at practice. Mark ![]()

Thursday, January 30, 2025 Dear MAST Athletes, Families, Coaches and Friends: Our athletes are once again giving coaches a great dilemma—because we have so many talented racers. Unfortunately, we're limited in the number of spots we can fill for the Section IV Championships. While we'd truly love to race ten athletes per team, we can only select six racers and an alternate. After careful consideration of race results throughout the season, coaches have chosen those who’ve shown the most consistency and speed. The final selections were made by each head coach, with input from the entire coaching staff. If your name isn’t listed, please know that you’re still an important part of this Sections team. Your dedication, encouragement, and competitive spirit pushed everyone to improve. You made practices and races better for everyone, and your influence remains in every athlete selected. Thank you for that! Congratulations to our Section IV Championship teams. Southwest Boys:

Warm temperatures. Rock hard grippy snow conditions. The glow of a magnificent sunset silhouetting the mountain top. Excellent course sets. Enthusiastic racers. Parents and coaches: please know how grateful I am to all of you. You filled our race worker positions and supported our athletes with enthusiastic cheering and some much-needed food and drink. As I stood on the knoll watching you descend the courses, I was struck by how much more aggressively and confidently you skied tonight. Yesterday, on an easier pitch, in bright sunlight, you skied ... somewhat tentatively. Tonight was a different story. I was most pleased by how so many of you attacked the line on the pitch. In addition, the course setters kept you turning all the way to the finish line and you succeeded in nailing the tactical challenge of making a clean arc to the gate and completing the direction change as you cleared the gate. And you did this in low light conditions. I am really proud of all of you. Continue to dream about making strong pole plants, driving your inside shoulder forward as you complete the turn, making a quick switch to the new edge-set in the transition, and making one strong, clean arc back to the gate with strong pressure over the outside ski. Bring the same confidence and determination to our final MEC race on Thursday. We do have practice tomorrow. Given that we have had two long days of racing already this week, the coaches want you to know that practice is optional tomorrow (Wednesday). Performing at your peak might mean giving yourself a brief break to catch up on sleep, schoolwork, ski tuning, family time, and some quiet. If something needs to be sacrificed, sacrifice training. If you can do it all, then by all means, come out and train. And be sure to train on Friday and Saturday. Now for some race results. Sam Moore and Lia Rulf were our top male and female competitors tonight, both finishing in sixth place overall. This is an impressive result against some very strong and experienced competition. Well done. Tonight, Wyatt Shelton, Eric Hemer, Sammy Hokenson (skiing for MAST tonight) and Xavier Turpin sent a message to their Washburn teammates that they intended to compete for one of the coveted six starting positions on the Section IV team with their 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th place finishes. Will Moertel also finished strong after his brief sojourn in Florida with a 19th place result. Then it was the SW boys turn to stack in there. Sully Hunt bested teammate Massi Bray by less than a half a second to finish in 20thplace to Massi’s 21st. In 23rd and 24th position were the Krueger brothers, Beckett and Rowan. Beckett has bragging rights tonight. For the girls, Violet Mueller and Avery Patterson had breakout race days, finishing in 9th and 10th places respectively. Rounding out the top 15 were Ella O’Connor(11th), Amelia Moertel(12th), Phoenix Ehlers(13th), and Harlowe Petersen (15th). In all, 16 of the top 30 female finishers were from the Mpls Alpine Ski Team. And in team scoring, SW came in second, Washburn third, and MAST fourth. You girls just keep getting stronger and stronger. And I need to commend you for one more thing: hill clean-up. The lane you slipped was silky smooth after you finished your work. Perfection. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you and good-bye to Marieke Ischebeck, our beloved exchange student and teammate from Germany. Marieke participated fully in our practices, camps, and races. She filled our days and evenings with positivity, joy, enthusiasm, and kindness. We helped her become a better skier and she brought us an endless stream of goodness. Safe travels home Marieke. We hope we will have the opportunity to see you again. Thank you for all that you contributed to our team and culture. Hopefully all of you are asleep now, dreaming of making perfectly carved turns down a never-ending mountain slope. Two weeks remain of our season. I encourage you to make the most of every day, every turn. See you on the hill. Mark and your loving coaches.

Hello MAST Athletes:
We are in the middle of an aggressive race schedule I just want to offer a word of encouragement as you work so hard to stay on top of your studies while also bringing your best skiing to the hill each day. You need to know that yesterday’s start order was filled with some of the best skiers in the State. The competition was fierce. The girls’ race featured two MN State High School Champions from 2024 and 2023. The boys’ field was filled with really strong teams and many skiers who are also club skiers in USSS programs. The Invite was a wonderful test of your progress, and you performed really well. On the girls’ side, we had 7 girls finish in the top 25 in a field of 20 teams. Eva made it to the podium in 8th place. Avery Patterson started 76th and finished 14th. Amelia Moertel has been working hard to stand strong on her outside ski and put her inside shin on the gate and it paid off with a 16th place finish. Violet Mueller (20th) and Phoenix Ehlers (21st) are finding the tiger within and attacking the rise line more aggressively. And Ella O’Connor is continuing her streak of putting together two clean runs to finish 23rd. Mila Voyakin started 116th and finished 25th. She won the sixth seed, and it looks to me that Sofia Larson finished 2nd out of the 6th seed skiers. On the boys’ side, Hudson White started 94th and finished 16th, our top male finisher.Congratulations Hudson. You have worked very hard to achieve that result.Steffan Drekonja skied an impressive second run to move up from 35th to 24th.Xavier Turpin and Will Cherveny executed strong tactics to finish 35th and 37th. Here is the good news. There are about eight boys who can come out on top on any given run. There are another six of you who are chasing those boys and closing that gap. And we have many more who are rookies this year and have made tremendous improvement in just their first year. As I told a parent yesterday, most athletes train better than they race. It takes time and experience for an athlete to bring his or her best training runs to a race. You will make mistakes. Just one turn skied out of balance can throw a great run into disarray. That happened for several of you yesterday. When that happens, this is how you need to think about it. Tell yourself that you are still learning. You will make mistakes and that is okay because I can learn from the mistake. I can use the mistake to focus in on a technical issue I have (i.e., like not pressuring the outside ski through the end of the turn or making a strong pole plant). Tactical mistakes can teach me how to improve my inspection and course memorization. And know this: you are improving. Be confident when you exit that start. Better yet, be fierce. Be determined. Expect to ski your best. Additionally, you need to keep supporting each other. Yesterday, standing on the knoll, I could tell when a MAST athlete was heading out of the start or crossing the finish line. I could hear the “roar of the crowd”, in this case, the roar of your teammates. KEEP THAT UP! From our first athlete out of the start to the last. Thank you to all the parents who have been working the races. This has been a big ask all season and I want you to know how grateful I am to all of you for helping out. Three more races to go (counting Sections). Please keep filling those race worker positions. And athletes, once again I was filled with pride to see our team descending South Wild in our patented FLYING V to clean up the ruts. There is no better expression of respect and gratitude. One bit of housekeeping for tonight and Thursday at Welch, store your bags on the shelving in the lower level of the chalet or in the cubbies in the hallway on the main floor. And please clean up after yourself as you always do. Let’s leave the chalet spotless when we leave. We still need two assistant starters and three gate judges for tonight. Please sign up to help here: https://signup.com/go/oEeafzb See you at the hill. Coach Mark on behalf of all the MAST Coaches. Good Evening MAST Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends: A bad day on the racetrack is better than a good day at the office, they say. Or in our circumstances, a good day on the ski hill is better than a great day at school! (We all know there are no “bad” days on the hill and never merely “good” days at school for our athletes.) Please see attached for all results from the day on the hill today, both team and individual, and read on for information for tomorrow and Thursday. Coaching comments will be provided to athletes tomorrow, but we did want to shout out Eva Voyakin for her top 10 finish (8th), along with top 20 finishes for Avery Patterson (14th), Amelia Moertel (16th), Hudson White (16th) and Violet Mueller (20th). Hello MAST Family, As we hit the final stretch of this season, we’re reminded of the iconic lyrics from Cake’s ‘Going the Distance’: ~“He's going the distance… He’s going for speed.”~ Much like a ski racer pushing through that final gate, we’re in the home stretch, gearing up to finish strong and leave it all out there on the course. Whether you've been chasing personal goals, tackling tough training days, or just trying to hold your form as the season wraps up, remember that every run counts. This is the time to dig deep, find that extra burst of energy, and finish on the highest note possible. As we go the distance, we race not just for speed, but for everything we've worked for all season long. Let’s cross that finish line together! This week was one for the books, starting with a canceled race thanks to an unforgiving cold snap that had us all feeling the chill. As soon as the weather allowed, we were back on the course — though not without challenges. A wave of sickness hit many of our skiers, but that didn’t stop us from giving it our all. Despite the hurdles, our athletes showed incredible resilience, pushing through tough conditions and illness to give us a race to remember! Coach’s Race Recap Afton presented some icy and fast conditions, challenging but fun courses, and some stiff competition. But we hung on, showed our grit, and placed 8 Varsity Boys and 10 Varsity Girls in the top 20. Eva Voyakin grabbed 4th place and Lucy Renz got 8th. The boys just missed placing in the top 10, but major applause goes to the return of Sam Hokanson who had a killer night - and our wise captain, Beckett Krueger, who showed his strength on the course and declared ‘I just can’t believe I’m back.
