Retreat Topics:
Required for all Parents! Please Sign the NEW MSAA SKI AREA WAIVER - takes just five minutes, link below! We have been informed that this year there is just one single ski area waiver for you to sign that will cover all ski hills. If you’ve already filled out a waiver, you still need to fill out this one. Important! When you fill out this waiver, please use the exact same skier name that you used to sign up with Team Snap. Below is a link to the list of Team Snap skier names. Make sure you fill out the waiver with the exact same name as on this list (even down to hyphen or no hyphen in last name). Why? Almost every time in the past, at various ski areas, there is a discrepancy with the waiver name and the name we’ve submitted for ski passes, and the skier is unable to ski until it gets straightened out with the Ski Area. This isn’t something you want before a race, as you would rather be getting some valuable practice runs in. MSAA Ski Area Waiver Form (You can’t ski anywhere in Minnesota without signing this) List of Skier Names to match with waiver form. (Please verify the waiver name you enter for your skier(s) matches the name in this list. If the name isn’t right in this list or is missing, let your Core Parent know right away.) MAST Family Contact Roster We’ll be sending out a team roster with contact information for parents and athletes. This roster can be used to reach out to families who live near you to form car pools, ask advice or offer assistance (like how to tune skis). No other use would be respectful. For those of you in witness protection or living off the grid, if you do not want your name, phone numbers, address, email addresses, or any other contact information listed, please send us an email and we will redact that information from the roster. TEAM SNAP Races, dryland practices, and supplemental dates are already on the Team Snap calendar. Check it out! Be sure to download the app on your phone. A few races are still TBD and dates will be added when they’re confirmed. Refer to Update #9 for more info on Team Snap. On-snow practices will begin as soon as we have snow and will be held every day, Monday - Saturday. Come as often as you can, but keep a healthy school/life/work/ski balance! Exact daily times will be available soon. *New change - We’ve decided to combine the MAST girls and boys teams into one team for ease of communication with your coach, Daniel Polland. This may also assist with carpooling communications. IMPORTANT REMINDERS Additional information can be found in Update #8:

VI. Concussion Baseline Testing: State law requires that coaches and trainers remove anyone suspected of having a concussion from athletic activity of any type. To return to play, the athlete must be assessed by a medical professional trained in concussion management. For Minneapolis students, the athletic trainer at your school must be involved in the post-concussion management and your return to play protocol. One of the tools that physicians and athletic trainers utilize to assess whether someone is healthy to begin the return to play protocol is an online cognitive test called the Impact Concussion Baseline Test. Athletes take this test when the brain is healthy and alert. Following a concussion and after the athlete’s concussion symptoms have resolved, the trainer may ask you to retake the Impact Concussion Baseline Test. The trainer can then compare your post-concussion test results to your baseline test results and determine if you are still suffering any cognitive deficits. Even though your symptoms have gone away and you feel healed, your brain may still be injured. You do not want to suffer a second concussion when your brain is still healing from the first. So, the baseline test is designed to give health professionals one more tool to assess how well your brain has healed following a concussion. Who needs to take the test? Anyone who is skiing with MAST for the first time and has not taken the test for another sport during the 2024-25 school year or this Fall. You should plan on doing a baseline test every 2 years for MAST. Where can I take the test? You can take the baseline test at either Southwest or Roosevelt High School. Washburn is unable to host Impact testing due to technology restraints. *If you are a Washburn athlete, please sign up for testing at either Southwest or Roosevelt. Testing at Southwest High School *Students need to bring their Chromebook if testing at Southwest* Tuesday, October 29 at 3:15 or 4:15 pm. Thursday, November 7 at 3:15 or 4:15 pm. Wednesday, November 13 at 3:30 or 4:30 pm Athletic Trainer: Kelsey GleichWacker ([email protected]) Directions: Location is at Southwest HS, in the College and Career Center. It’s the room adjacent to the counselors’ offices. If you come in the front entrance, go all the way to the back and left of the cafeteria. Go up the half flight of stairs, straight ahead is a room with lots of windows, go to the right of that room and immediately to the left is 3 steps. Go down the steps and through the door on the left. Reminder that today, from 3pm to close, MAST coaches will be on hand to assist you and the Pierce staff with properly matching and fitting athletes with new gear. MAST has a longstanding relationship with Pierce based on their expert advice and commitment to the alpine ski racing community. Pierce is a “Certified Race Center” which enables them to extend Race Program Pricing on select race products. Members and their immediate family receive a 15% discount off suggested retail price on most merchandise as well as special rates on ski tuning. Boot and ski models and sizes do sell out, so if you know that you will be buying new equipment this year, we suggest making the appointment by calling Pierce Skate and Ski directly. 952-884-1990. Of course, Pierce is a great equipment resource any time throughout the season. See you tonight at Pierce Skate and Ski! MAST had a wonderful week and we hope you did too. Info Night was fun, well-attended, and educational, and we welcome our new athletes to the MAST Family! Thank you for joining us. If you weren’t able to attend, here is a link to the presentation. Our Core parents are happy to answer any questions you may have (contact info at the end of this email). Big thanks to those who participated in our 5th annual MASTers Golf Tournament! We had a great time, beautiful weather, and raised money for our program. Congratulations to our winning foursome: Ian Petersen, Peter Hunter-Hanson, Steve Johns, and Peet Moseley. Action items for this week: Register, secure your racing equipment and gear, buy your Hyland passes, and add important dates to the calendar. MAST Registration is OPEN: REGISTER HERE We’re happy to see so many racers registered! Thank you to those who have already done so. If you haven’t yet registered your racer, please do. The team will be capped at 120 athletes - register today to secure your spot! Early registration also helps us get a good idea of the number of skiers we’ll have this year so we can begin planning our practice sessions at Hyland. This is the first of two registration steps you will need to take to be fully registered for the 2024-25 Alpine Ski Season ($300 Team Membership Fee). You will Register with MAST through a platform called TeamSnap. Information needed for Team Snap Registration:
*Parents will need to download, sign and upload a MAST Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability form. If the athlete is 18+, he/ she needs to fill out the form. **Do NOT try to register with your smartphone. Use a computer or tablet. If you are a returning athlete, please look through all of the data points you entered last year for accuracy. (ie updated grade, school, home numbers, email addresses, home addresses, health insurance, medical conditions, etc. in TeamSnap) The second step is registering for Alpine Skiing as your high school winter sport with the Minneapolis Public Schools Athletics Department. This opens up October 14 and you will be instructed to pay the $75 to Mpls Public Schools. We will send a link and reminder for MPS registration next week. In addition, MN alpine racers are required to have a Sports Qualifying Physical Examination completed and submitted along with MPS registration. Many doctors already have this form, but you should provide it to your physician, just in case. EQUIPMENT AND GEAR: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9TH MAST Equipment Day at Pierce Skate and Ski Equipment On Wednesday, October 9th, from 3pm to close, MAST coaches will be on hand to assist you and the Pierce staff with properly matching and fitting athletes with new gear.
