Hello MAST Family! It feels so great to be back on the snow! The conditions have been excellent despite the white squall on Wednesday evening. Our first Supplemental Training is coming up this Saturday. Links to sign up are below, along with some additional details on what to expect, which can be especially helpful for our new athletes. *Please make an extra effort to read every item in this Update to make sure you’re not missing anything. We will be so happy when we don’t have to say the word ‘waiver’ again. ;) Coaches Corner Keep working hard on the fundamentals as we practice on snow early this season. Each drill has a specific purpose that will help you to excel in skiing, especially when we get into slalom courses. I know these first few weeks can feel tedious as you are anxious to get into gates, but I encourage you to persevere knowing that the hard work we put in now matters and will pay off as we progress through the season. (coach Matthew) Continue to focus on each run, each turn, each movement in building your fundamentals. We have lots of skiing over the next 3 days so keep your boots dry, eat healthy, study hard and tune your skis. We have been cleared to set gates on Monday so we will keep you posted on the need for shin guards. Keep working hard! ACTION ITEMS IN THIS UPDATE:

Hello MAST skiers,
As it happens, someone walked off with Stella Wedren's pink Leki ski poles tonight. They have Beckett Wedren's name on the guards. If you did, please contact Stella. They may have been taken by another team (they all look alike), but we thought we'd check with our MAST skiers first. Thanks for checking! Hey MAST!
We’ve made it! Are you ready for our first on-snow practice of the season?? Your Coaches are ready for you! See below for some very helpful reminders and tips on how to prepare for tomorrow’s practice. AND GUESS WHAT?! We only have a FEW more spots open for Giant’s Ridge! We have extended the registration deadline to this Sunday. Don’t miss out! Our athletes talk about this camp throughout the year and gain so much from it, from the skills they obtain to the relationships they build with their teammates. The experience is priceless. ON-SNOW PRACTICE - DETAILS AND REMINDERS PRACTICE TIMES & LANE ASSIGNMENTS Please refer to TeamSnap for practice times and lane assignments. In your daily schedule in TeamSnap you should see detailed pod practice times and lane assignments. 12/11/10 means 10th thru 12th graders show up for 3:45-6pm, etc. “Pods” mean “grades”. GETTING TO HYLAND Athletes are responsible for getting themselves to Hyland. There is a free auxiliary lot on Ski Hill Road where many athletes park and take the free, regularly-operating shuttle. The best way to get dropped off at Hyland is via the drop off / pick up lane (enter and go right at the roundabout). It can be very busy, with long lines sometimes, but it moves pretty well. For carpooling, please refer to the family roster. HYLAND PASS Don’t forget your Hyland pass! You must take your pass to the ticketing window each day before practice to receive your daily ticket. Allow time for this. WHERE TO CHANGE Leave your skis and poles in the racks up the outdoor stairs. Find your teammates inside the North end of the building at the tables and cubbies. The upstairs bathrooms or lower level changing rooms (near the ticket counters) are available should you need to change into layers before practice. You can get your gear on and store your bags and shoes in the cubbies or under the tables where the team gathers. Many skiers come to Hyland dressed and booted at home before even getting to Hyland - never even needing to enter the chalet. Just pick up a lift ticket and get on the snow. WHERE TO MEET ON THE HILL We will be meeting each group in front of the center chair lift where we will split into groups. COACHES REMINDERS: As you are prepping for our first day on the hill please review the ski fundamentals pyramid ATTACHED and your goals you set at the retreat. EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST - LABEL EVERYTHING Current weather prediction is cold with high winds so please dress warmly as there will be extended periods of coaching instruction.

COACHES and SUPPORT TEAM, Mpls Alpine Ski Team (Jen Peterson - Communications) Hello MAST Athletes & Families! Temps are supposed to drop tomorrow night and stay that way, which is great snow-making weather! We’re hoping to ski soon after Thanksgiving. That means Monday and Tuesday could be our final two Dryland sessions. To ensure we’re ready to go, please read this entire update carefully. We all want to be on snow, but please keep showing up and working hard at Dryland. It would be awesome to see 80 kids at Dryland on Monday and Tuesday! Coach Joel has been focusing on teaching visualization strategies to the athletes. All elite skiers use this skill to help reduce anxiety and be more prepared for the race course. We don’t have time to teach this when on snow, and if you don’t show up you will not have the opportunity to learn and practice visualizing. See you all Monday and Tuesday! *** Coaches Corner*** What a great week of Dryland. I want to congratulate each and everyone one of you who attended our sessions on relaxation and guided imagery. You’ve shown intense focus, patience, trust, and the coachable spirit required to elevate all aspects of your training and skiing experience. We will be implementing more imagery this week. If you are struggling to stay in focus, I would suggest you spend some time watching videos of the skills we are focusing on.

Happy Friday, MAST Athletes & Families! What a great week. It was so nice to see all of you at Hyland on Monday and throughout the week at Dryland practice. Thank you for continuing to do the work to prepare for an awesome season - and thank you to all the parent volunteers and coaches for your big efforts in getting us ready for it! We’re looking forward to having an awesome Saturday with all of our athletes. See you tomorrow! ***NEW*** Coaches Corner Nice first week of dryland training! Keep working hard the next few weeks until we are able to get on snow. Saturday is the one day out of the whole season where coaches take the time to cover all the aspects of racing and training that seem to slip through the cracks when we get on snow. Please come ready to learn and focus on ski racing. -Coach Daniel Athletes, you are strongly encouraged to attend dryland practices. We know you have a lot going on in your lives but as athletes committed to this sport we want you at practices. Please come and push yourself to the best of your ability. How hard you work now shows us how hard you are willing to work once we get on snow. - Coach Matthew The weather is going to turn the middle to end of next week and finally will be dipping down into snow making temps. Hyland will make snow whenever the temps drop below 28 degrees, so keep your fingers crossed. With any luck we will be skiing the first week of December which means we are guaranteed at least another week plus of dryland. Rain (inside the cafeteria) or shine (outside) we will be holding practice. We need to see all your smiling faces as many nights as possible. Now that the roster is set and you all are cleared, we will be tracking dryland attendance...in part to learn all your names! Lots of new faces this year and I just love all the introductions I've witnessed over the last 4 days. Keep it going! The season is going to fly by so get your rest, eat healthy, and study hard. (List of those still needing to sign) Takes just five minutes. (link below) You can’t ski without it! This year, there’s one single ski area waiver for you to sign that will cover all ski hills except Afton. If you’ve already filled out a waiver, you still need to fill out this one. Important! When you fill out this waiver, please use the exact same skier name that you used to sign up with Team Snap. Below is a link to the list of Team Snap skier names. Make sure you fill out the waiver with the exact same name as on this list (even down to hyphen or no hyphen in last name). Why? Almost every time in the past, at various ski areas, there is a discrepancy with the waiver name and the name we’ve submitted for ski passes, and the skier is unable to ski until it gets straightened out with the Ski Area. This isn’t something you want before a race, as you would rather be getting some valuable practice runs in. MSAA Ski Area Waiver Form (You can’t ski anywhere in Minnesota without signing this) List of Skier Names to match with waiver form. (Please verify the waiver name you enter for your skier(s) matches the name in this list. If the name isn’t right in this list or is missing, let your Core Parent know right away.) *AFTON - Afton is an exception and will have its own Waiver this year. We will send that as soon as it becomes available. HELPFUL VIDEOS Below are two videos done by Deb Armstrong who has a great youtube channel that breaks down critical skills needed to ski a race well. Retreat Topics:
Required for all Parents! Please Sign the NEW MSAA SKI AREA WAIVER - takes just five minutes, link below! We have been informed that this year there is just one single ski area waiver for you to sign that will cover all ski hills. If the name isn’t right in this list or is missing, let your Core Parent know right away.) MAST Family Contact Roster We’ll be sending out a team roster with contact information for parents and athletes. This roster can be used to reach out to families who live near you to form car pools, ask advice or offer assistance (like how to tune skis). No other use would be respectful. For those of you in witness protection or living off the grid, if you do not want your name, phone numbers, address, email addresses, or any other contact information listed, please send us an email and we will redact that information from the roster. TEAM SNAP Races, dryland practices, and supplemental dates are already on the Team Snap calendar. Check it out! Be sure to download the app on your phone. A few races are still TBD and dates will be added when they’re confirmed. Refer to Update #9 for more info on Team Snap. On-snow practices will begin as soon as we have snow and will be held every day, Monday - Saturday. Come as often as you can, but keep a healthy school/life/work/ski balance! Exact daily times will be available soon. *New change - We’ve decided to combine the MAST girls and boys teams into one team for ease of communication with your coach, Daniel Polland. This may also assist with carpooling communications. IMPORTANT REMINDERS Additional information can be found in Update #8:
