Good Afternoon:
Three quick announcements. 1. I am cancelling Supplemental Training on Saturday, Dec 17 for a number of reasons. We had a much smaller sign up and many of those who did sign up are already racing at Wild either Saturday or Sunday. To race all day with a 5am wake up call on either Saturday or Sunday, after having a 5am wake up call on Friday, it is not prudent to also try to train on Saturday night. So, come to Saturday morning training. I will refund all athletes who are currently registered for the Dec 17 supplemental training. 2. The snow did not freeze over night. I am not very confident that we will have safe snow conditions today to ski courses. Come to practice and wear your protective gear, but just know that we may not be able to bang gates tonight. We have plenty of other skills to work on so know that it will still be very productive and worthwhile training. 3. My Week Five Update gave you incorrect information about which pods are practicing at 5 and 6:30. Team Snap is correct. Correct: Pods 11/8 at 5PM Pods 12/7 at 6:30PM Incorrect: Pods 12/7 at 5PM Pods 11/8 at 6:30PM If you can adjust to the correct schedule, please do. If you cannot, please come to practice at the incorrectly announced time. Confused yet? Pods 10 and 9 are still practicing at 3:45. For those going to Wild Mt on Friday, attached is a schedule of the day and run orders. For those who did not get to watch video online with a coach, we will try to set something up for your pod over the weekend. Thanks, Mark Attached is the schedule and run orders. argh!

Good Afternoon:
The forecast does not look inviting for driving or skiing this afternoon and evening. I am canceling today's practice due to forecasted rain and sleet. I doubt many of you have the proper rain gear to enjoy the experience of skiing in the rain. Instead of skiing in the rain tonight, I am hoping that we can organize multiple video sessions by pods and with a coach that can be conducted over zoom or google meets. If you have been coming to practice regularly, there should be video of you in Sprongo. The coaches are all at the day jobs, so once I know which coaches can run a video analysis session, I will send out a link that each athlete can join with their pod and coach. After school, take a moment to select one video from the season that you would like a coach to analyze with you. This will help speed things along. Coach Joel will be hosting a Sprongo Video Analysis session with the SW/MAST Pod 10 athletes at 6PM. Here is the link to join the session. https://meet.google.com/izm-pmfz-wit Coach Mark (me) will be hosting a Sprongo Video Analysis session with SW/MAST Pods 11 and 12 at 5PM. Here is a link to join the session. meet.google.com/eyn-shdz-rbf As other coaches set up their sessions, I will pass along the call in link. Sooooo... check your email after school and later. Meanwhile, study and tune your skis. More to come... Mark Good Evening:
Thank you to all the coaches and parents and athletes who participated in our first race of the season tonight. Attached are race results. Congratulations to Gabby Harritt and Andreas Drekonja for their first place finishes. They are the 2022 Mpls ALPINE Champions. Taking the Team Championship titles are the Washburn Boys and Washburn Girls. There was a lot of good skiing on display tonight. If you are unhappy with your results, do not beat yourself up. Instead, think about what you can do a little bit better next time and visualize yourself doing it better. Better turn shape back to the gate? Consistent pressure over the outside ski? More effort and courage coming out of the start? Quicker feet in the combinations? Everyone who has been coming to train on a regular basis is improving. Stay focused on strengthening your technical and tactical skills and the results will start to fall into place. The coaches have spent a lot of time looking at the results from our timing sessions last week and tonight's race. We have selected the athletes who will be entered in the Wild Mt Invitational on Friday. I will be issuing refunds to anyone who paid for a lift ticket to Wild for Friday, but was not placed on a team. Please talk with your teachers tomorrow about your upcoming absence from school that day. Be sure to keep your skis tuned this week so that you have less work to do Thursday evening. Congratulations to the following athletes who qualified to compete on Friday. MAST Boys 1. Makeen Mkaouri 2. Zae Isensee 3. Colin Brandt 4. Hudson White 5. Sam Moore 6. Henry Payne MAST Girls 1. Elise Legler 2. Beatrice Moldow 3. Anne McConville 4. Bret Margolis 5. Avery Patterson 6. Maddie Graff SW Boys 1. Simon Showalter-Loch 2. Parker Hunt 3. Kai Lamb 4. Jonah Byron 5. Eli Kroll 6. Sylvia Pulkrabek 6. Julia Westphal Alternate: Ramie George We will have a bus to transport everyone TO Wild Mt. As usual, you will need to catch a ride home with a parent-- either your parents or a teammate's parent. No athletes are allowed to drive themselves to the race. If you want to ride to the race with a parent, you are free to do so, just let me know so we aren't waiting for you at the bus. I will send a more specific email in the next day or two to just the Wild Invite parents and athletes with more information about the day. For now, try to line up your transportation home, talk with your teachers, get plenty of rest, and keep training well. And if for some reason you are unable to race, please let me know immediately. See you tomorrow. Mark MAST Update Week Five Part I
(I will have more to say in Part II on Monday night/Tuesday morning) Sunday, December 11, 2022 Dear MAST Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Friends: Hopefully everyone is recovering nicely from a hard week of training. The coaches are impressed with your positive spirit, consistent effort, and steady improvement. Let's keep improving this week! Change to Thursday’s Training Schedule Please note that I am making one change to the THURSDAY training schedule this week. Here is the new schedule for Thursday: 3:45-5:15PM. All Wild Mt Competitors. Lanes 7 & 8. 5:00-7:15PM. Pods 8/7. Lane 7. Meet on Lanes 7 & 8 at 5PM. 6:30-8:45PM. Pods 12-9. Lane 6. Meet on TOP of south chair at 5PM. Bring and use your rope tow gloves. Lots of laps. I made this change to allow the athletes who will be competing at Wild Mt on Friday the chance to get in a short training session and still have time to tune their skis and get to bed early to meet the bus. Training is optional for all Wild Mt competitors on Thursday. If you feel you would be better off resting, please stay home and do just that. Mpls Alpine Championships Racing begins this week. Our first race is tomorrow: The Mpls Alpine Championships. Attached is a run order that parents can print to follow the race. I will also have a few copies to distribute to fans. If you did not state your intentions for this race, you are on the run order, just after all of those who did state their race intentions. As you can see, athletes are racing in order of their grade level per team. Here is a schedule for the day. 2:45PM Early release from school. 3:30-4:15 Course Inspection. 3:50 Gate Judge Meeting in the Finish Arena 4:25 Forerunners Start. 4:30 Run One 5:00 Re-Inspection/Quick Slip 5:15 Run Two 5:45 Hill Clean Up 6PM Team Meeting Early Release from School I emailed the athletic directors to request an early release from school: 2:45PM. Please sign up to help: https://signup.com/go/ztKXKXG Wild Mt Invitational Shortly (hopefully) after Monday’s race, the coaches and I will send out our team selections for the Wild Mt Invitational on Friday. Week Four Monday, December 5, 2022 Dear MAST Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Friends: We had another very productive week of training. We utilized many drills that sought to improve your stance and balance and the use of your lower legs to move your skis deliberately and smoothly on and off the edges. We also introduced drills that strengthen your position over your new outside ski in the transition, create strong edge angles at the top of the turn, and help you then pressure the outside ski as you approach the fall line. And we introduced some drills that helped you discipline your upper body to maintain a strong but quiet position over your outside ski as the turn progressed. This week we will continue to work these skills AND add drills that will teach you proper pole usage: planting and gate clearing. Exciting stuff. Listed at the end of this update are some links to a few excellent instructional videos on pole usage and a few other skills we have been covering in training. Also posted on Sprongo is a new batch of demonstration videos. Please watch these once your homework is done. Week Four Drills To Build The Skills On Sprongo.
