We had a wonderful race last night on Dan’s Dive at Welch Village against Hastings. Thank you to all the coaches and parents who worked the race and came out to cheer on our boys and girls. Thank you to the athletes who not only competed very strongly but also gave a beautiful demonstration of how to effectively slip in the ruts at the end of a race. The Hastings coach was moved to comment that the Welch maintenance staff did not need to groom the hill that night.
The results are in and our athletes posted some great results. Individually, our girls placed three girls in the top five and seven in the top ten: Elsa Peterson(1st), Rachel Tanner(2nd), Ahnika Berg(4th) and Ava Paulson(6th), Billie Forester(8th), Julia DeGeorgeo (9th), and Ava Flaskamp (10th). Three boys stood atop the podium in their race: Luke Conway(1st), Liam Huyen(2nd) and Logan Griggs(3rd)--- a good day for those boys whose first names begin with the letter ‘L’. Only 8/100s of a second separated Luke and Liam and only 4/100ths separated Liam and Logan. Also finishing in the top ten for the boys: Augie Bent (7th), Charlie Smith(8th) and Ryan Arnold (10th). Congratulations Luke and Elsa on your victories.
In the team competition, the SW Girls kept their dual-meet win streak alive, but the Hastings boys got the wins over both our SW and MAST squads.
A word about how races are scored: There are several ways to score races. One method assigns a set number of points for first, second, third, etc. and adds up the points earned by a pre-determined number of racers from each team. Sometimes a race will count the top four racers, sometimes the top six. Last night we counted the top ten skiers from each team. We assigned 50 points for 1st, 49 for 2nd, 48 for 3rd…etc. Using this method, the results were:
SW Girls: 367… Hastings Girls: 354… MAST Girls: 340.
Hastings Boys: 368… SW Boys: 345… MAST Boys: 340
The other method of scoring is to score each team directly against each other: MAST vs Hastings, MAST vs SW, SW vs Hastings. This method assigns points to the top ten finishers, regardless of the team. So, 1st place earns 10 points, 2nd earns 9, 3rd earns 8. There are 55 points up for grabs. A team can claim all ten spots and win 55-0 or the teams can fairly evenly split the top ten spots and the score can be 28-27. In smaller meets, I prefer the head to head method, so I re-calculated the team results using our “Hyland” method. The outcome is the same but the results are much closer.

Hastings Girls 23 SW Boys 23
SW Girls 37 SW Boys 28
MAST Girls 18 MAST Boys 27
Hastings Girls 36 Hastings Boys 28

Our January 27th race in Mankato was cancelled a few months back due to a conflict in Mankato’s schedule. We have now rescheduled that race for Friday, February 3 at Mt Kato in Mankato Vs Mankato East, Mankato West, Lake Crystal, and Mound West Tonka. The race will start at 5:30PM. The bus or buses will need to leave school at 2:40PM in order to arrive at Mt Kato by 4:15PM. This would allow you time to change into your gear, warm up and inspect the course. I will seek a 2:30PM early release from school for those of you who wish to race on Feb 3 at Mt Kato. Please add this race to your calendar. I will let you know when SIGN UP for this race is open online.
Thanks again to all who assisted with yesterday’s race. It was a fun evening.
See you tonight.
