Happy New Year. Hard to believe we are already entering week eight of our season.
Overdue Thank You….
I want to say thank you to all of the parents, coaches, and athletes who have been knocking themselves out to make this season so successful. Our athletes are making great technical and tactical improvements on the hill. Best of all, they bring a strong work ethic and a positive spirit to the hill each day. I wish all the parents could see what the coaches get to see on the hill every day--joy, excitement, determination, kindness, effort. Thank you athletes and keep it up. You give us old coaches energy. I also want to thank the many parents who work so hard behind the scenes to make all of this happen—coaching, fundraising, volunteering with meals or on the hill at races, and behind the scenes as administrators. To all of you who have contributed your time and talent: THANK YOU!
I need to recognize a few people by name. Michelle Smith and the captains put together a fantastic MAST apparel sale. Michelle also served as a chaperone and lunch coordinator with Dave Paulson at our Giants Ridge Camp. Doug Tanner, Marie Franchett, and Jean Hutchinson-Legler worked their tails off to feed a brigade of athletes, coaches and parents at the Wild Invite. Kelly Bent and Christine Smalley have been busy coordinating our fundraising endeavors. I also want to recognize our volunteer coaches for their efforts on the hill as well. Every day of the season we have had a substantial number of volunteer coaches on the hill to assist our paid coaches. Because of these volunteers, our new and inexperienced skiers have received the individual attention they needed in order to safely and competently negotiate a slalom course. Special recognition needs to go to Jack Strand, who has coached every day of his winter break from the University of Colorado. I knew Jack would be a good coach. I just didn’t know he would be THIS good… and so invaluable. We will miss him greatly when he returns to his drums in Boulder.
Great Harvest Bread Company Fundraiser—Sunday, January 8, 2017
This is a HUGE fundraising opportunity for MAST! We need EVERYONE to get involved. Steve and Gail Arnold are donating 100% of the sales from their bakery on Sunday, January 8. Not the profits… the gross sales. This means that they are absorbing all the costs—labor, ingredients, electricity, etc. So if you sell a loaf of bread for $5, all $5 will come back to MAST. The key for us to make money on this is to PRE-SELL bakery goods. If all 100 athletes sell 10 loaves of bread ahead of time, MAST will earn $5000 in pre-sales alone. Download the Pre-Sales Order Form. Please send this out to everyone in your email address book. Go knock on doors in your neighborhood. Take copies to work. The TOP sales person will win a $200 gift card to Pierce Skate and Ski. The second place sales person will win the opportunity to set a course at a MAST practice one night. Please sell. Order forms are due Wednesday, January 4. We have a race on Tuesday, Jan 3 and practice at 6:30 on Wednesday. You can turn in forms at either event. Start selling today.
The second thing you need to do is sign up to work the fundraiser. We need people to post posters in schools and in south Minneapolis public spaces early this week. And of course we need a lot of help all day long in the bakery on January 8. Here is a link to sign up: GREAT HAREST BAKERY FUNDRAISER SIGN UP
Chipotle Fundraiser: Tuesday, January 10
Our annual Chipotle Fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, January 10 at the Edina Chipotle location. Download the flyer and please share this with everyone you know. We will move up practice a bit that night: 4:30-7PM to allow everyone to stop by Chipotle after practice.
We have two races scheduled this week:
- Tuesday, January 3 at Hyland: JV and Varsity vs Wayzata, Mound West Tonka, and Holy Angels. 4:30PM Start. 3:45PMInspection.
- Friday, January 6 at Hyland: JV Only. 4:15PM Start. 3:30PM Inspection.
Most of you will need an early release from school to give yourself time to make it to Hyland in time to warm up and inspect the course. Please do your best to be on the hill ready to ski by 3:15PM on both race days. This gives you time to pick up your bib and take a couple of warm up runs before inspection opens. If your school is further away from Hyland, you will want to leave a little earlier than those whose school is closer. I don’t think anyone needs to leave school before 2:15PM. I will send a list of all race participants to the high school athletic directors for an excused early release starting at 2:15PM. Middle school parents should contact your middle school attendance clerk about an early release.
Athletes: make sure you ACCEPT or DECLINE your invitation to race: Race Day Athlete Sign UP
Parents: we need help running the race... can you volunteer please: Race Day Volunteer Sign UP
We had an excellent training session at Welch on December 28. Our next two supplemental training sessions will be held on Saturday, January 21 and Saturday, January 28 at Wild Mt. We will leave the Washburn parking lot at 2:45 and return at 10:30. Please register early: Wild Mt Supplemental Training Registration
Here is a link to the MAST Sprongo site: https://sprongo.com/team/32056 - playlists
We take video nearly every practice. Some of you asked me how to TAG your video to your account. At the time, I didn’t realize that Sprongo had changed this process. They did and the process is less obvious than it previously was. Here are some instructions:
You will need to find YOUR video clip or clips in the PLAYLIST. Click on the bubble that appears in the upper right corner of your screen while your clip is running or paused. A screen will pop up that allows you to TAG yourself (as user) to that clip. It would be great if you could go back through all the playlists and find your clips and get them tagged. This helps out the coaches. Note that you can download video to your computer and keep them for posterity. If you have any questions, call me: 612-275-8392.
Coaches: you can also tag athletes because you are administrators. If you click on the PLAYLIST that you would like to TAG, you will then see a box that allows invites you to edit or upload video. Click on that box. Thumbnails of all the videos in that playlist will appear. You can then easily tag that video click to the athlete or athletes in the clip. Feel free to do this.
